No great loss. As was proven last year before he was hurt, Staal doesn't have the skating to be effective on the larger ice. This short coming was the reason he wasn't selected for Team Canada at Sochi.

We're talking about Eric Staal. He's not perfect but I promise his skating is not the reason he wasn't selected for team Canada

For once the goaltending doesnt look that bad, still the forwards were hard to pick. god for the sake of team canada i hope Colorado and Chicago get eliminated early so hopefully a combination of Mackinnion,Duchene,ROR,Sharp and Towes can help this team.

After seeing this roster- i do not think this team can even medal, and that will not be a priority, since this tournament is always about getting the chance to see up and coming Canadian players for other best on best tournaments. Canada won when it mattered in Sochi. I could care less if they do not medal, but i know the Europeans will say Canada is not the "best" because they lost this minor league tournament. It happened last year in this forum. That being said- i do enjoy watching this tournament- even if it is not best on best.

Who's confirmed and who would you like to see??

For better or worse, every single national governing body takes things other than play on the ice into consideration. Far more important is that part of being picked to these teams is building a resume. Since becoming a professional, Taylor Hall has 0 playoff experience (Hockey Canada considered that, as per the CBC behind the scenes documentary) and has a single World Championship tournament, at which his play was underwhelming. So yes, it is in fact important for him to play in tournaments like this if he wants to play on the big teams. In my opinion he is an obvious pick for Canada going forward, but he has obviously hurt his chances somewhat with this decision.

What is the difference between Taylor Hall and Matt Duchene in terms of play? Hall is a bit better offensively, while Duchene is a bit more well rounded. Hall even plays at a position where Canada is weak, while Duchene plays at Canada's strongest position. TSN had Duchene projected on the roster all along, and one of the main points that they mentioned was that Duchene had impressed at the World Championships last year. Hall has done nothing to impress internationally, or in the playoffs. If anyone thinks that these things don't enter Hockey Canada's decision making process, they have not been paying attention.

I agree with you Jack. What NHL player doesn't have a few nagging injuries after an 82 game sched? If you are on the roster and playing well and productively, then injuries are not a reason for declining in most cases. I'm not giving Hall the benifit of the doubt here and this for sure puts him behind the 8 ball in future TC editions. At this point I'd prefer Duchene moving to LW over Hall. no question about it.

He certainly didn't learn anything from being around Ryan Smyth (Captain Canada) who always showed up after a long, disappointing season and yes, with a few nagging injuries.

Given the injury he suffered at last year's event and the disappointing season, if I were HC, the invite would not have even been extended for him to decline. And I'm a Staal brothers fan.

I'm hoping most of the players are added late after the 1st. rd of the playoffs are decided anyway.

A line of Perron-Kadri-Burrows is going to be hilarious to watch.

Please can we call it the dive line.

Easily one of the most detested lines in the world and its glorious!

are you just speculating on this guy or has it been confirmed he was invited?

Tyler Bozak will likely play for Canada at the world championship.

Phaneuf not going.
Reimer got an invite, but undecided.

Man, I promised myself I wasn't going to criticize any of the players who took up the challenge this year, but I get a feeling that will fall by the wayside rather quickly here!! just like New Year resolutions.

It's a possibility that there will be 4 Maple Leafs on team Canada.

Tyler Bozak
Nazem Kadri
Morgan Rielly
James Reimer

Sean Monahan getting some International experience.

If Morgan Rielly makes the team it will be a coming out party for him. It will be fun to watch this elite skater perform on the big ice. It's interesting to note that when drafted, Burke stated that he would have picked Rielly first overall. The world snickered. No one's laughing now.

The Sabres' Tyler Myers broke two ribs but hopes to represent Canada in world championships.
