Finally upgraded my TV to a Sony Bravia OLED XR. Those bastards at Best Buy talked me into the Sonos surround sound. From just having a 75” 1080P with a wimpy sound bar to this is quite the upgrade. Can’t wait for hockey this year
What size?

Congrats man. A few years ago I decided to go for it and went with the LG QLED for the basement with a sound bar and then recently I upgraded our upstairs 1080P to the same LG we got before just this year’s model and it’s so worth it. I was never a believer in TV quality until I got the first one and yeah, it makes a big difference.
For sure, I actually can’t believe I had my other TV now. I mean like damn lol, movies and shows are unreal picture. They totally sold me on the Sonos though, the Arc sound bar and subwoofer the sound is super sick. I think I watched music videos till 2 am last night.
What size?
I went with 65”, my living room is sort of small. Didn’t want to it to be obscenely big.

I love my Sonos…..great platform for open space living….

I have a 75 in the Master….it feels obscene…..the same model on the main level over the fireplace….feels perfect. The 86 in the mancave……sooooooo nice but I still would take a 90 if the prices weren’t insane.

When I was helping my Dad by another TV earlier this year was right next to some 86"ers and man that felt like an amazing TV wall. I spent 5k on a 60" kuro elite plasma back in the day so that is sort of the price line for me. Tbh could have upgraded to about that size but the idea of attempting to move that thing as I do plan on buying a house/relocating at some point but with the way things are that is naturally getting pushed farther down the road.

I have Sonos sound bar/sub in my family room with 82“ Samsung. It‘s now the only place we watch TV. So good. My basement has a wall of TV’s though so that is pretty cool. 92” projector and two 40” LED’s. So great when multiple games on. But projector sucks compared to LED’s. I am more into sports that movies which is when projector is ok. So replacing that is my next move. Just put a 90 inch LED on the wall.

How is Sonos for music? Right now we're living in 650 sq ft and have our 75" on the only wall that will accommodate it, bascially dominating the entire public space... sigh. Working with the architect now on the new house and planning a central sound system and a samsung frame over the fireplace but the audio needs to give great music first and foremost . Also struggling with if and where to put a second TV... I dislike having a TV in my bedroom.

So I helped a former bandmate setup a Sonos about 5 years ago and even being a video/audiophile I could see the attraction of it from a general purpose perspective of it. Did feel a bit overpriced compared to performance similar to bose (for some of its products not all).

If one is going more for a like an immersive experience and have a space for that when it comes to audio I use fight club rules...the first rule of audio club is the center channel is the most important speaker..the second rule of audio club is the center channel is the most important speaker so plan your speaker budget appropriately. All the other speakers are icing on the audio cake. Not a huge fan of dedicated subs generally like integrated subs on the two fronts but if one has smaller fronts instead of the big towers a dedicated sub makes sense.

Of dedicated subs get the biggest speaker size in your budget. As any bass player will tell the bigger the speaker size the deeper the lows especially when you want that subsonic thump in your body that generally movies can only supply.

I'm a big fan of Definitive Technology speakers since you can reach into audiophile territory performance-wise at a lower price point with the only sacrifice being visual aesthetics.

I think Sonos is very good (not great) on music. In other words, it isn’t as immersive as say Definitive Technologies as @usiel states. That is good stuff right there.

My family room where we watch TV is a two story (so about 20 feet tall). I run a sonos soundbar up front, Sonos Sub behind the sofa, and two rear speakers integrated with Sonos So i can run 5+1. I like loud music and listen to a lot of busy music like reggae, cajun (like Dirty Dozen Brass Band, as well as funky rap. Also a lot of country. The Sonos does well. But what i really like is the integration. I run a separate Sonos amp and speakers in kitchen, living room, and deck, and Sonos Move portable in my office. I can put music on all speakers. Or different music in different zones. So similar to more expensive whole house audio setup.

I also run Control4 to control other home automation, and my basement setup (5 TV’s total). For audio i run 6+1. but it is old at this point and needs to be revamped. I have looked at options but the costs are all over the place. I am seriously considering putting Sonos down there so I can run zones on the same system. So I’ll get a significant upgrade, but also be able to control all of these zones which is important to me.

It’s a very wide spectrum. So not fully appreciating “great music sound”, Budget, size of room/house, if you want multiple viewings areas, its hard to tell you which way to go. Just telling you how I use Sonos. I like.

Regarding the new place there think about your eyes and neck..what is the most natural position for the eyes and the head is having your eyeline right at the 50% on the vertical side and your head angle at a neutral head forward position. So when I see over the fireplace tv mounts that are super high I cringe a bit especially when that mount is very high. Naturally the farther the viewing distance can help mitigate this.

This link is decent things to understand the angles: Viewing Distance Calculator

This is simply a guideline so for a general purpose-type situations things should be more liberal versus the hard core like movie theater experience.

For music it is a stereo experience which is important to remember so unless you are going for the dvd audio or those other obscure music HD formats (at this point) that are non-stereo. For me I'm just not enough an audio music hard core person to have like baller money for the music audiophiles with their amps and super expensive fronts.

One thing that I have gotten to that makes more sense to me as far as music is getting into external amps/headphone amps and having a quality headphone is like the best in active music listening. And it is important to acknowledge active music listening versus passive listening (or multitasking listening or atmosphering listening aka music just ambiance).

I have a Hel2 and a couple of Jotenheims from Schitt audio and HIFIman sundara and a Focal Clear MG Pro which have very different purposes and strengths and weaknesses. Anyways should probably have a different post for that kind of detail.

Thanks so much. Yeah, TVs over fireplaces have never been my fave but since I'm building it all from scratch I figure I can do what I need. The calc is super helpful though thanks. I have a lovely pair of Bowers & Wilkins headphones... but I also just want my space full of music whenever possible.

Nice reading y’all’s set ups. I went ahead and bought the new mini Sonos subwoofer with 2 of the gen 2 one speakers for the full surround sound. It’s beautiful for music, it’s a complete game changer for sports and movies. It’s cool how the surround plays crowd noise, it’s badass

Agreed. I use uBlock on PC and Block This on Android and both make the site look simple and perfect. I'm almost always willing to unblock when a site asks, but the difference on this forum is staggering. It goes from being a pretty seamless forum experience to a clunky ad machine.

I'd display ads if it were reasonable. Same thing with subscribing. I'd subscribe in a heartbeat if was worth it. But now the only meaningful "upgrade" is being ad-free, so it's basically a hostage situation. "Pay me money or I'll make my forum look like shit when you're here!"

Not a great business plan.
