A couple of thoughts -

1) It's fun seeing Mailloux getting mailed in.
2) Zito is a Wings' pick... someone one day in the division?
3) It would be fun to have that sort of guy in the Sabres stable.

NHL suspends agreement with Russia-based KHL

The NHL suspended its dealings with the Russia-based KHL on Monday, a move that could make it more difficult for teams to sign players from there.

The NHL told its teams to cease contact with KHL counterparts and Russia-based agents as part of the suspension of the memorandum of understanding between the leagues. They can continue to communicate with North American agents certified by the NHL Players’ Association but may have more difficulty completing agreements.

I wonder what this means for our current prospects. I know that’s way down the list of priorities given the situation over there but I’m still curious if this has any impact on players we already drafted being able to sign here.

Yeah, none of their Russian prospects have had D+1 seasons that would make you think they'd be signed this year. They retain their transfer rights for some time.

McLaughlin & Giles, two BC guys, as UDFAs

Sign Johnson/Power/Levi. Burn year 1 on all of them, give them a few NHL games, hopefully we can trade 5 or so roster players for draft picks so we could use the bodies in Buff/Roch

Having gone back and looked specifically at him more... sign Zach Metsa from Quinnipiac. That's some Krug/Spurgeon potential happening there.

Man you really have been watching a lot of Kozak. What do you think of Stephan?

I'm stuck in North Florida and there is nothing for me here. So I am binging too much puck.

As for Stefan, he's going to make some team really happy in the middle of the draft. He seems like the sort of guy who in years past would be a Chicago pick (and they have a handful of thirds this season so... yeah) who people wonder how they got him when he's breaking into the league in 2 or 3 seasons.

I am not well versed in the structure of the NCAA.

Not to worry. Basically the conferences are who teams play the most and then they have playoffs to see who gets a higher seed in the overall NCAA tournament in the spring. Here's a link to the six conferences by member, as well as the independants:

Teams and Conferences - College Hockey, Inc.

Each conference winner gets a spot in the field of 16, then they give 10 at-large invitations to the tournament to fill it out.

It’s a very confusing structure. It used to be simpler

It did?

WCHA, CCHA, Hockey East, and a 4th one that was Southern University teams (like UofA-Huntsville). You were either a DI or a DIII school.

None of this DI-A or DI-B crap they have now

There was no southern conference.

And you are missing the ECAC.

Things aren't that different today. Even back in the WCHA days, you had the lower level D1 conferences that schools like Niagara, Canisius, and RIT have always played in.

Yep, the AHA or MAAC which became Atlantic Atlantic hockey something like 25 years ago. 'Taint new.

The Wiki pages for the various hockey conferences are really good at documenting the changes over the years.

Things aren't really that different than when I was at Clarkson from 92-96.

The basic changes are just the bulk of the WCHA becoming the NCHC and the Big 10 schools breaking off into their own league.
