In the summer time, rookie camp or the following year when rights expire? No clue the timing on this stuff

Contract rights are held based on conditions in the CBA.

Article 8.6 in the CBA governs the length of time a player drafted from outside of North America is considered part of a team's reserve list and can be signed:

(d) Players Drafted from a Club Outside North America.
(i) Notwithstanding any provision of Sections 8.6(a) or (b) to the contrary, if a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is drafted from a club outside North America, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.

(ii) Notwithstanding any provision of Sections 8.6(a) or (b) to the contrary, if a Player drafted at age 20 or older is drafted from a club outside North America, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the second June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.

(iii) Upon the expiration of the applicable exclusive right of negotiation as outlined in subsections (i) and (ii) above, the Player shall be a draft-related Unrestricted Free Agent.

So it's four years for 18 and 19 year old draftees and 2 years for 20 year old draftees. The exception being from Russia at the moment since there is no transfer agreement between the NHL and the Russians, so those players' rights are held in perpetuity.

Not sure if this was discussed earlier, but I've been wondering if any of the three late round D-men taken in 2018 -- Cronholm, Kukkonen, or Worge-Kreu, have shown enough to get a conract this summer. Their stats aren't impressive, but info has been hard to find on their development. I was hoping they'd hit on at least one of these guys. Not sure they did.

Cronholm definitely no.

Kukkonen and Worge Kreu...we aren't in a crunch when it comes to ELC. We could sign and keep in Europe. Or, maybe they are just pegged as 3rd pair types where they are, and they could be 3rd pair in AHL as well. We can't just have veterans in Rochester.

Bloom/Kozak/Nadeau can all be signed and sent back to their current leagues as slides. None of them can play in AHL next season.

Marjala looks like he won't be offered a contract next year and we have enough left shot wings in the system as it is so not big deal for a late round pick. With last years draft the big questions will be if Rosen will ever be an impact wing (he will be under the radar with all the studs in our stable and at some point will be like found money) and if any of the Russians will cross over. In hindsight I wish we made some safer picks. Rosen and Poltapov were both high risk/reward and then we triple down with Kisakov. But all the other picks were really solid.

When do you think they offer Bloom, Kozak and Nadeau contracts ? If they can’t play in the AHL and they aren’t ready for NHL then why not sign next year

Probably after they finish getting Power, Johnson and Levi/Portillo signed.

Makes sense as those guys can join Sabres/Rochester…..other guys are too young do no rush

I might be wrong but I think Kozak can play in the AHL next year as he is an ‘02. Not that the AHL is the right spot for him, but he would be an overage player in Junior next year.

Okay, I caved for Peacock and I'm watching Michigan-Notre Dame on one screen and Rochester-Syracuse on another.

Looks like the Irish will win this one - Portillo was okay but he could not save them from themselves.

Power coughed up the puck late that lead to the ENGA to make it 4-1 (okay, okay, there was a penalty on a guy who had the puck going toward an empty net so they gave Stastny the goal). He was just eh.

I thought Hughes was shitty in his own zone.

Twice in the third period, Johnson has just flashed his skating in two different ways. On one, he takes a step and erupts up the LW from inside his own zone to the middle of neutral zone to create an odd-man opportunity. The pass to the other lane-filler was not there.

The second, he steps around his check inside the offensive blueline and gets to the middle of the slot for a quality shot opportunity.

He's going to be so damn good.

on March 12th we may get the battle for who gets offered a contract first.

I'm not sure I follow. Michigan and Minnesota are both heading to the NCAA tourney after this anyways, and they wouldn't play each other in the semifinal round anyways since there's reseeding and they are seeds 1 and 2.

I’m the one confused. I was trying to be too clever and didn’t realize that’s just the Big 10 tourney.

That is a really messed up bracket, you'd figure 2 and 3 on one side with 4 potentially moving on to face the 1 in the other out of hope for 1 vs 2 for the championship

I have a feeling that they reseed after the opening weekend since there are no lines from the 3 opening weekend series and the semis.
