Id be worried about anything above 6MX6rys

West is a big division still, you have to worry about the effects of being crunched by the Wheeler, Byfuglien, Virtanen, Lucic, Maroon, Gudbranson, Getzlaf, etcs could have a player as small as him over the course of many years.

He's super talented no one is disputing that, but we've all seen other talented small players drop off a cliff (Gerbe, Conacher etc) obviously they weren't as talented as Gaudreau, but once the defenders learn your habits they can make it hard to score because as someone that small you'll never be able to go through them.

I think he's talented but he'll be closer to 6.5M.

If you have to pick between Monahan and Johnny Hockey you take Monahan every time.

I'm an Oilers fan, Gerbe and Conacher are terrible comparisons for Gaudreau

I never said he was as good as McDavid, Crosby, or Kane (Toews doesn't belong in that category imo). But 7-8M isn't the same range for those guys, and obviously I expect Gaudreau to sign a little under his ask. He's definitely in the same category as Tarasenko who got 7.5. When guys like Voracek are getting over 8M while feeding off Giroux (not best example due to UFA, but point still stands) then I don't think it would be bad value for the Flames to give Johnny 7-7.5M to carry around Monahan through his prime (hyperbole of course, I like Monahan, but he's not on JG's level).

First off Toews is likely the most complete player in the NHL. He plays the toughest minutes of any forward in the league. The only reason he doesn't end up at the top of scoring every year is he understands what it takes to win. And then there is the leadership.

Monahan is molding himself after Toews and if Calgary ever wins a cup it will be because of his dedication to being the best player he can be.

As I said the Flames management knows where the skill and money needs to be. BT will do what is best for the Flames.

What's so funny about that? Have you seen the kid hit? He crunched McDavid pretty good at the young stars last year and McDavid is one of the best skaters the game has seen. Virtanen hits like a freight train and has the wheels to catch anyone in the league as well as weighing 223lbs at 19.

He's obviously never going to put up Gaudreau points but he absolutely deserves credit for his physical strength and speed at such a young age. I wouldn't want to get hit by him.

If he was 28 he'd be almost $9M.

He won't get 7.5M with 5 RFA years.

my point is this, weather you are a rfa or a ufa the league pays about 1 million for every 10 points you score. he scores around 80. so I expect him to sign a 8x8 or in and around there.

I already acknowledged that Gaudreau is far superior. I was simply listing a few Small players that had early success in their career due to elusiveness, and once the elusiveness was no longer a new thing and the defenders adjusted, they because one trick ponys and headed to Europe. Gaudreau is far superior to both. But give him his 8X8 on his last RFA year after proved he can do this for more than 2 seasons

Gaudreau has played in the west for the last 2 seasons and did good, the NHL is now a speed game(this is where the league wants to go(especially when Vegas comes into the fold) and where the league is headed. More GM's are moulding their teams in speed team, after they saw the Penguins dismantle the Sharks in the playoffs. Gaudreau is way more smarter than, Gerbe and Conacher and Gaudreau has dominated, every level he's played at, Gaudreau, will adjust to the game like Theo Fleury(5’6” and 180 pounds) and Martin St.Louis(5’8”, and 176 pound) did and I wish/hope he touches the level of Ted Lindsay(5’8” and 163 pounds), Henri Richard( 5’7” and 160 pounds) and Marcel Dionne(5’8” and 185 pounds).

So give him 8x8 = 64 and worry about building your team around an elite player.

He's the perfect age to sign to an 8 year deal. If Calgary wants to nickel and dime a guy they know is unreal, so be it. It will probably save them half a mil a year or so.

Using Tarasenko's deal as a guideline, if Gaudreau really asks for 8mil/year, it's tough to understand why "Flames and Gaudreau are far apart".

7.5mil should be min. for a 8 year deal.

Flames management are a bunch of cavemen. Gaudreau is far and away their best player, and they are going to hold him hostage because they think he's too small? Honestly, is there something in the water up in Alberta that destroys basic judgement and critical thinking skills of hockey management personnel?

I don't know what else Johnny has left to prove. It seems like its always something, they are never satisfied, will never admit that he actually is just that fantastic of a talent. He's more than proven his ability to dominate at the highest level despite his size, yet people still want to hold it against him.

Hilarious. Even his own management team doubts him. They are no better than the cohort of perpetually wrong haters on HF.

Talk about jumping to conclusions. Wow. You're reaching so far, be careful you don't fall right on your ass.

He gets a blank cheque and put whatever number he wants

Basically. Connor knows the Oilers are his team now. He was given the reigns and now he can lead the team. He won't have problems signing here. There's also a great chance Connor get's the C come pre-season so I can't see him bolting especially with adding players to help him succeed (Lucic, Larsson, Pulju, etc.)

Add all the players they want, all that matters is if it translates on the ice. Oilers fans more than anyone should understand this. If the results don't come, it won't matter that management 'tried'. A blank cheque won't matter if they don't win. He can get that from anyone.

Thats fine if thats your opinion, I have always thought Toews was extremely overrated on this site and in the hockey world. He's a great player, but I don't think he's in the elite of the elite. I also don't care about leadership or some "understanding how to win", I'm talking about hockey ability. The Blackhawks have won so much because they have always been an incredibly deep team and have a great makeup of players fit for playoff hockey.

Monahan can try to mould himself all he wants after Toews. He might reach his offensive ability, but Toews came into the league as a great 2-way player and Monahan has a extremely long way to go to reach where Toews is at in that regard. If there's anyone who I think could reach a Toews like level and maybe even exceed him offensively its Auston Matthews.

If these numbers are true, Gaudreau's camp is closer to what Johnny is worth than the Flames are. He's probably gonna be top 10 in scoring again.

Lmao, Gaudreau is better than Monahan, the Toews stuff is hilarious he would score more points if he could, it's not like Toews and his linemates get on a 3 on 1 and Toews decides to drop back, to help cover the counter-attack. Other Centers don't cherry pick while Toews stays low and cover's his man. Toews also isn't the reason the Blackhawks have won 3 cups (he's definitely a part of it but people act like he carried tham or something), he's the third wheel on that Blackhawks team both Keith and Kane are more important to their success.

That's freaking hilarious but I guess it is that attitude that has allowed the Oilers to suck for so long.

Hockey skill encompasses everything that is not pretty in the game too. Shot blocking, back-checking, checking, stopping pucks are as important as putting up points.

If every team went with that thought pattern Semin would be an absolute stud and Vanek would still be a viable player. Thank you for clarifying your point.
