I'd give him the same contract as Tarasenko, easily. I think both players are basically even.

I already acknowledged that Gaudreau is far superior. I was simply listing a few Small players that had early success in their career due to elusiveness, and once the elusiveness was no longer a new thing and the defenders adjusted, they because one trick ponys and headed to Europe. Gaudreau is far superior to both. But give him his 8X8 on his last RFA year after proved he can do this for more than 2 seasons

I would have no problem paying Gaudreau now because I don't see how dmen can adapt to him. If you play him too aggressive, you're likely getting walked. If you back off and give him room he's gonna hang on to the puck and make a play. It's like trying to shutdown Kane. The only way to stop him is a heavy backcheck from forwards but that's how you stop any star forward. I guess there's a chance he could get destroyed by a big hit or collision but he's so shifty and has eyes in the back of his head.

I'd pay Gaudreau Tarasenko money and McDavid gets 2 blank checks in case he makes a mistake with the first one. Who writes checks these days?

very similar in age and experience at the time of signing as well. I bet Johnny is picking 8 million because he wants to end up at 7.5

Of course he is, if flames lock him up 8x8 that's a good and fair contract. If that's what he's asking for I'm surprised this isn't done yet, what's Trevling think he's going to get Gaudreau for?

This makes an Oilers fan in me smile

Not sure why... They're paying Lucic 6m for the next 7 years and will have to fork out something crazy for McDavid. Gotta think he's getting between 10-12m at least (I don't think he goes much higher than that solely due to how it would hinder the team around him - one only has to look at CHI for proof of this).

As for JG... 8m is kinda high, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least for him to sign something in the high 6s/low 7s. Likely offsets that by not going 8 years.

Sounds about right as the ask. Settles for a bit less. Comes in around the Tarasenko number. Well worth it -- he'll be a tremendous player in the league for a long time.

Or the question should be what does Treliving know that most don't?

Any comparison to Tarasenko's contract is moot as most GM's and analysts point out is that Armstrong was gambling huge on Tarasenko's skill level. As we all know BT is not one to gamble at all.

Monahan was signed first and that tells you where BT's priorities lie and whom he thinks is more important to the team.

While Gaudreau looked really good, Ebs also looked like a star player in his 2nd year before signing that 6 x 6.

Yes! I think Johnny settles down after a big payday too

Nah Mcdavid can't go over the Lucic cap the oilers have. :sarcasm:

I love Eberle, but JG is the better player. I don't know if he'll be PPG every year, but I think he'll definitely outproduce Eberle (although McDavid might have something to say about that if Eberle plays with him).

Their stats for their first 2 years are really similar...

Ebs didn't have the supporting cast Gaudreau did. I'm not saying Ebs was better but having Gio and Brodie on the backend helps. It comes down to Gaudreau and Ebs first 2 seasons. Is the difference an extra 2M?

That's freaking hilarious but I guess it is that attitude that has allowed the Oilers to suck for so long.

Hockey skill encompasses everything that is not pretty in the game too. Shot blocking, back-checking, checking, stopping pucks are as important as putting up points.

If every team went with that thought pattern Semin would be an absolute stud and Vanek would still be a viable player. Thank you for clarifying your point.

The opinion of a poster on HFboards is the reason the Oilers have sucked so long?

I think you're confused my friend.

Maybe not 2M, although I think Gaudreau will end up signing for 7-7.5. Eberle had the better forwards and cashed out on an RNH who was allowed to play a pure offensive game as a rookie and a pretty good sophomore Taylor Hall, and Gaudreau had the better dmen. I'm just talking solely on watching the two that I think Gaudreau is better than Eberle. I think Gaudreau creates more on his own and is better on the defensive side of things. Is it worth 1.5-2M more? Im not sure, but I also think Eberle's contract is fair for what he does offensively.

Also in Eberle's second season he had a shooting percentage of ~19%, and he had the highest on-ice shooting percentage in the league.
