8 mil today is prob like 6.5 mil 3 years ago. There's a new going rate for top end talent, whether or nor Gaudreau qualifies for that I'll leave to the board.

It's pivotal that the Flames get him on a good contract so that they can have the cap space to surround him with a winning team. I find it hilarious that all these Oilers fans are saying give him a blank cheque. We will see if they feel the same way when Mcdavid is up and he chews up 1/5 of their cap space.

I would give him up to 9mil/season long term. The kid has a chance to be the 2nd best player in the conference, and this is coming from a Canucks fan who didn't believe in Gaudreau just 2 seasons ago.

Monahan, Mackinnon and Marchand are not top end talent? All 3 at less than the "3 years ago" rate.

This is the one thing that I wish players would put first. I get money plays a huge factor in it but isn't winning cups just as high as important? If players would just take a cut for a few years one team can build an all star team. Imagine Chicago and LA but better! I think Toews and Kane at 10.5 is crazy.

Except that's not how it works. Teams can talk all the "lets build a winner" they want, when it comes down to it they will trade you off at a moments notice if you start slipping. Look no further then Ottawa and Alfredsson if you want to see what home town discounts and loyalty get players.

I don't care if the Oilers give mcdavid an extension of 12m/year for 8 years tomorrow - as long as he stays an oiler

Remind me who the GM is again?

Nobody really knows how much influence Burke has on hockey ops but his official job title is President of Hockey Operations. If he doesn't have any say in this what the hell are they paying him to do?

This is likely going to be the biggest deal in Flames history. It would go past Burke, past Ken King and all the way up to Murray Edwards.

I can understand the player's POV, a 7 or 8 year deal is most of his prime years, he's 23 now, that will take him to 30.

It's simply not smart to accept a contract of like $6.7 million and burn many of your best years not getting paid what you're worth.
