...Have you seen how many other young players have taken max length contracts with "one good year". I guess his Calder finalist year doesn't count eh.

And sure I'll comment. Gaudreau has more assists than Marchand. Has more points than Marchand. While being 5 years younger.

With your logic you should make a proposal Marchand for Gaudreau, everyone should be in agreement with you!

Could also say that Marchand happened to play with one of the best C's in the game and was the beneficiary where as JG is the driver on his line.

The difference is in 3 years Marchand's contract will be an albatross and Gaudreau's will be a steal if it's under $10 million dollars per year.

It's still a worthwhile risk imo. You don't give him those three years he's free as a UFA to find it elsewhere, which he definitely would have. For that cap-hit I would digest it.

The biggest risk is not signing him immediately and letting this fester into another Ryan Johansen situation where both sides sour on each other and he eventually gets traded.

Unfortunately for Calgary their front office definitely has enough ego to let such a scenario happen.

People forget Iginla sat out for a contract early in his career, look how that turned out. It doesn't have to be personal.

since both are unsigned, would there be a possibility of a deal between Anaheim and Calgary centered around Lindholm and Gaudreau?

Makes less sense for Calgary. We have Giordano, Brodie, and Hamilton signed long term. Lindholm is a 1D who would be the 3D on Calgary, while Ferland would be our 1LW...

And then Calgary loses one of their 4-d-men to expansion? Ain't gonna happen.

Why not bridge him for high value if you're worried about how he progresses. Two years at thirteen million or fourteen . If he progresses well then why not pay him 8 or 9 a year

Cause he won't want 8 or 9 after that bridge deal. More like 10 at least, unfortunately.

This is one reason why I don't think bridge contracts are the great ideas GMs seem to think they are. You gamble and could wind up paying bigger dollars and have even bigger cap issues down the road.

Wait, and Marchand hasn't been improving????

Let's look at the stat lines for last year shall we:

Gaudreau:

https://www.nhl.com/player/johnny-gaudreau-8476346

Marchand:

https://www.nhl.com/player/brad-marchand-8473419

A few points.

Last year Marchand,

1. Scored more goals than Gaudreau
2. Had a better plus minus than Gaudreau
3. Scored the same amount of power play goals as Gaudreau
4. Scored the same amount of game winning goals as Gaudreau
5. Scored more short handed goals,
6. Had a better shooting % than Gaudreau

OH, and he has scored 20+ goals is 5 of his last six seasons, AND is a Stanley Cup champion. Overall he is a more proven player than Gaudreau.

So, yes, I think they are comparable. If anything Marchand is the one who should have been holding out for 8 million per.

But yeah, Marchand in an inferior player...right.

Marchand is more proven. More proven to be the inferior player.

Gaudreau has more 60+ and 70+ point seasons than Marchand despite only playing 2 seasons. Since entering the league, Gaudreau has outscored Marchand by 40 points (in only 2 seasons!).

Gaudreau is very easily the superior player.

Haha yep easy argument to argue.

Honestly Calgary can go 8x8 now or does Johnny sign one year at let's say 2-3 million then gets arbitration rights and asks and gets more then 8.

I am thankfull of our front office. If this is their hard cap on players, then so be it. I trust them over HFBoard poster's any day. Especially with the turnaround they have accomplished since the regime change. They have won countless trades, maximized profits on expiring assets, and drafted very well. If they have a hard cap on a 23 year old after 2 seasons, I am ok with that. It sucks, I like Johnny hockey, and think he is amazing and all, but the Flames are being smart here, don't get it twisted.

The turnaround to almost last place a year ago?

As an Oilers fan you should know they made the playoffs the year before last. Or do you just not understand what playoff hockey is?

See trades involving: Hudler, Russell, Glencross, Baertschi, Granlund.
Among other changes they brought to this club, I am much more confident in their abilities.

The slap in the face to glencross is absolutely something that should be seen with pride. A true "Flames Farewell" as it be.

He was being a baby. How was the trade a slap in the face? IRC he even asked to be traded over ice time in a season he was sucking.

Rightfully so. Became incredibly inconsistent and one-dimensional. Became even lesser in Washington.

It's business, he wasn't owed anything. He took a discount to receive a NMC. Business.
