Pretty much! It was only a gag nickname started by Boston fans but then people were printing t-shirts with his image and "Johnny Hockey" on them, after the nightmare of Johnny Football his agent thought it best to have control on what gets printed with his image.

A good example

That is tremendous.

The fact you are asking that says
you are full of opinions.

Opinion; Def: point of view not based on facts or knowledge.

-you have to look at current cap.
-Look at past contracts of top 20 scoring forwards coming out of ELC.
take the value. of the contracts as a % of that cap year.
- See the cap values of Forwards coming out of 2nd contract and going to full UFA contract.
get a value of the ufa years as a % of that cap year.

you'd up with a much larger data set of peers 2nd contracts as % of cap
and
Ufa contracts asa % of Cap.

take the current cap and group the similar peers % o cap for RFA years and % of cap for UFA years.
you get 7-7.5 RFA
and
10 for UFA.

I am sure he would gladly sign a 5yr @ 7.5M per.

You rambled about Monahan for half your post then pulled 7.5M and 10M out of your ass. You're supposed to be the stats guy. Show me the % of cap RFA amounts and anything else you want to justify 8.5M * 8.

That's ludicrous. Johnny is not getting a record setting RFA contract.

Nothing you've said even comes close to refuting that. 5y at 7.5M is such a horrendously bad contract for the Flames it's not even funny. How can anyone write that down as a legitimate option with a straight face.

Tarasenko's contract is by far the best comparable. If we assume a 3 : 4 ratio of RFA to UFA years it comes to about 6.43M per RFA year and 8.57 per UFA year.

Add another RFA year for Johnny and you come to 7.23M for 8 years. Bump it up a tiny bit for negotiations and you are around 7.325M for 8 years. How can you justify giving Johnny 1.25M more a year than Tarasenko when Tarasenko has less RFA years?

Get real buddy.
Firstly, Tarasenko is a superior offensive force.
More importantly, 5 years of that 8 yr Tarasenko contract are UFA years...that's player demand years that might be worth 10M per.
If Johnny wants to sign a 2 yr bridge then ask for the Tarasenko contract im sure the Flames would fax it over to him.

Alright perfect. Johnny signs for 6.9M for 8 years. I'm happy with that.

Sounds about right. But Johnny obviously wants out after his RFA is over. So you gotta go less than 6.9 for RFA years. I see a Monahan $ contract here

Obviously wants out? Are you new to sports? Contracts negotiations and hold out are part of all sports. If he didn't want to be in Calgary he would've finished off his last college year and signed wherever he wanted. He's said multiple times he wants to be in Calgary long term, Iginla went through the same exact thing

8 doesn't seem like an outrageous ask for him, I would guess they settle somewhere in the middle maybe around 7.25-7.5 or so

Tarasenko plays with better players than JG. Tarasenko had 74 points last year, JG had 78. You are so wrong.

Suck it up Treliving ... give Johnny his 8 million 8 year deal ... he is worth it ... we have never had a player like him in Calgary ... bottom line ... hockey is entertainment .. Johnny Hockey = entertainment .... I really can't see a downside to giving him that kind of a contact ...

Smart, only let her cheat on you with a boy, not a man.

That "boy" just tore up the NHL with 78 points in 79 games. That "boy" will continue to do so until he is a 'man', whenever you want to accept him being good enough.

I think JG is at least equal to, if not better than, Tank offensively, but it's a stretch to say he plays with worse players. Monahan, Giordano, and Brodie aren't exactly chopped liver. Does the Flames' depth suck? Sure. But Johnny doesn't play with most of the depth players most of the time.

That is 100% gold. Considering my joke with my GF is that she can only have one guilt free pass to cheat on me and that's Gaudreau, I'm totally getting her that.

You're on the verge of downright pushing her to do it.

The more I read about this the more I wonder if this is going to end up in a trade. $8M sounds about right for a cap hit (8 years sounds good for term) but how are the Flames going to fit that in with the rest of the contracts they have to sign?

Unless the trade return was absolutely magnificent, I'd say the chances are about zero. If cap hit is an issue, they can reduce the years to 7 or 6 at a lower hit. If Gaudreau just doesn't want to stay longer term, they can sign a contract that takes him to UFA. Either of those would be better than most trade returns when all is said and done. Plus, even if he did want to go East, he might get Stockholm syndrome after the 3rd or 4th year of his new contract. Problem solved.

Johnny's the last re-signing. They would probably like to add an FA, but they don't need to.
