There isn't a single team , other than the flames , that wouldn't pay him what he wants.

I'd give him 8/8 and I'm confident that other teams would too.

Careful flames, you're playing with fire on this....

The kids a rare talent. 8 million a year literally just covers his skill. If he were a great leader he'd be asking for 9+.. Kessel got 8 when the cap was lower and honestly kind of comparable players to a certain degree.

That gets to the problem with paying Johnny.
The franchise cornerstone and next Flame captain just signed a long term deal for 6.25m/yr. They arent going to pay Gaudreau more.
It's like trying to justify paying Patrick Kane more than Toews for his skill and scoring...not gonna happen. Toews brings more than Kane...and oh, by the way, he's a centerman, not a winger.

Except for the fact that Monahan isn't comparable to Toews in any way, shape or form. Johnny made him and is the superior player, not the other way around.

They'll pay Gaudreau more. I love Monahan, but he's not on the same level as Gaudreau.

In your closet
If the Flames aren't going to go over the Gio number they're going to trade Gaudreau to somebody else.

Given that, I'm pretty confident that they're going to go over the Gio number.

As an Oilers fan, I would love to see them rehash the Subban fiasco and sign him to a bridge contract, but unfortunately I think Treliving is too smart for that.

I don't think he'll ask for a trade and it's likely he'll accept a bridge deal because he's nice and won't hold out the season in spite of contract demands.

Too bad.

23 year old winger Gaudreau has one secondary assist in 2 games. Meanwhile, 6million/yr and 23 year old centre RNH has a goal and two assists.

Gaudreau has has a goal, someone seems mad Gaudreau is far and way the best player in that draft:laugh:

I can guarantee you Johnny gets more, probably a million more. Monahan is without a doubt a very key piece in calgarys rebuild but Johnny is the superstar on the team who can create offense out of nothing. He's a very rare talent, as someone who is a huge Iginla fan I have to say he's the most talented player I've seen on the flames (I'm 21, obviously fleury and lanny are there to)

a key point that I think a lot of people are missing is that the Flames need to also prepare for resigning Bennett who is poised to have a very good season this year and will be due a decent sized contract as well. For people saying just give him what he wants obviously in a non-cap world I would agree but there is clearly a financial plan Brad and his team have set which would allow this core group of young flames to stay together for a while. You can't sign Gaudreau to 8 then sign Bennett to 4-5 next year and then resign Brodie 2 years down the line when's he's a UFA. There are long term implications the flames are clearly trying to avoid

Actually, the Flames franchise cornerstone is still unsigned and when he does sign it will be for more than what Monahan got

Brodie has 4 more years left on his contract. And both Brouwer and Frolik's deals expire at that time freeing up almost 9M.

Bennett would need to have a phenomenal year to command even similar dollars to Monahan. If anything, he's getting a bridge deal.

And it's not a question of whether Gaudreau deserves 8M a season (not sure why it's such a struggle to remember it's a negotiation) but whether the Flames will get off their nonsensical "Gio cap".

Why not just wait until next off season to sign him. If he puts up another year where he's top 10 in points then he should be worth 7.5 million + long term.
Why should he sign for less after another good year??

Seriously. He's a super star. And he's putting people in the seats for 15 years to come. Just get it done, whatever he asks pretty much.

Flames (like Oilers Leafs Nucks and Habs) sell out regardless their performance on the ice. You pay Gaudreau to help the team win, and there wasnt too much of that happening during Johnny's career year last season.

Unless the cap goes way up, he doesn't deserve $8 million.

Disagree. The guy can drive an entire offense. He's getting better and better every time I watch him, and he's still young. If he would take $7.5 per year over 8 years, the flames would be laughing.

Yeah I agree. The kid is the real deal, Calgary should stop jerking him around and pay him.

He is completely in the right to ask for $8 million, even at that dollar price he probably will be underpaid in 3-4 years relative to where the cap is going.
