I realize its easy to say this when it's not my money, but you would think some players would be more keen on taking discount deals so the team can spend cap money elsewhere.

Why would you?

Maybe the team doesn't spend that saved money at all. Maybe they spend it on the next David Clarkson.

NHL history is pretty clear that spending more money doesn't automatically translate into having a better team.

What my point is, was your first line had three points in the first four games against a heavy team in the Ducks. He was nullified to an extent, by the Ducks. In the playoffs, if a first line only generates 3 points in four games, there is a problem. What changes in another playoff game, with two of the same players on the first line...

Strikes me as a rather straw man argument you've been pursuing here.

Things change. Past results do not guarantee future (bad) performance.

Biggest overall wreck is the 2 semis. The semi vs smartcar, well... the smartcar may be able to avoid some wrecks with maneuverability, but when the semi does hit it all that's left is a smear on the road.

Probably not the best analogy if you're trying to imply Johnny Trademark is durable.

Ha ha...no kidding...I am amazed this is even a debate.......he is a great player and exciting to watch.....but will he survive the harsh rigors of the NHL in the years to come is a legitamate question ...come on now...be honest......

If Johnny can stay healthy , he is worth the 8 million right now....the key is going forward if he can continue to avoid being hammered...so far so good.....but all it takes is one shift......

What yr leaving out, or missing entirely, is one solid hit to anyone in this league and.......................that could be it

Or one flukey play (Chris Pronger, anyone? A semi if there ever was one)

Unless a player has a history of injuries I don't think risk of injury is much of a factor. Any player any size can get injured. If he's looking for 8 he'll get over 7 maybe 7.5 on a long term contract. He is worth it. Pay the man!

I'm old enough to remember another kid come into the league, great skill set, every award imaginable growing up and never got hurt. but at 6' 175lbs everyone seemed to think with his skinny frame he would get slaughtered in the NHL. Guess what? he didn't, it looked like he had some kind of the sixth sense for avoiding big hits and making defenders look stupid in trying to dish them out, coaches all around the league were going crazy at watching their players fail trying to crush this kid. well, he went on to a "fairly" nice career.

As long as he (or any player really) can avoid serious head shots or knee injuries he should be fine. I've seen him hit a few times against the Oilers and he bounced right back up. He's small but not made of glass.

So what? Taking more money as a player very obviously reduces the options for management in terms of your supporting cast, irrespective of whether or not GMs are guaranteed to make good use of additional cap space.

Isn't that kind of low for UFA years? Feels like he could make more on the open market.

For sure he would... but he's not going to be a UFA for 5 years and that's assuming he doesn't get injured and is still playing at an elite level in 5 years. Plus Flames would pay less for shorter term so he's losing money each year until he hits UFA.

Two scenarios:
1) He signs 8 years, $8m per. That's $64m total guaranteed for the next 8 years. 3 UFA years at $8m per.
2) He signs 5 years, $6.5m per. Then hits UFA and signs $10m for 3+ years somewhere else. That's $62.5m total over 8 years.

Scenario 1 you're guaranteed $64m in a tax friendly market. Scenario 2 you're not going to make as much over the 8 years and you're not even guaranteed to get the big payday in UFA if you get injured or your production wanes.

Which do you take?

he is good, pay him what he wants. The last thing you want is to force sign him to a 2-3 year 6mil and have him mad at you for 2-3 years, just waiting for the perfect time to GET EVEN. Others will wine him and dine him and slap a HUGE offer in front of him

Dreger: I couldn't get #Flames or my sources there to confirm reported Gaudreau numbers, but I was told 'it is a boatload of money.' 1040

This current era is arguably the least physical era, due to the slower and more physical players being phased out. Its all about skating and skill.

There has literally been no better time to be a small player in the league. And Gaudreau is showing that, and so will his salary.

Treliving doesn't leak info. Anything from 45 million to 64 million is a boatload of cash. This isn't really an update.

Treliving: Johnny how much money and how many years do you want?

Johnny: Talk to my agent for the numbers. When you reach a contract, take 5 million dollars, buy me a yacht and put the rest of the money in the boat. Capiche?
