So the Flames are offering about 6.5 and Gaudreau wants 8. My guess is they each fold at 7.25ish which would be an absolute steal on an 8 year deal. If the Flames suck in 8 years and Johnny leaves, I won't even be mad.

I honestly don't see him signing for 8 years if the cap hit is that low. Just think of where the salary cap was when Hall signed for 6 and Jonny Hockey has done a lot more in his first few seasons than Hall did.

I'm old enough to remember another kid come into the league, great skill set, every award imaginable growing up and never got hurt. but at 6' 175lbs everyone seemed to think with his skinny frame he would get slaughtered in the NHL. Guess what? he didn't, it looked like he had some kind of the sixth sense for avoiding big hits and making defenders look stupid in trying to dish them out, coaches all around the league were going crazy at watching their players fail trying to crush this kid. well, he went on to a "fairly" nice career.

you didn't....

really? you did?

Johnny is a very, very good player. People toss 'elite' around so much it weakens the meaning of the term. Crosby, Ovechkin, Benn, Kane, Kopitar, Malkin, Bergeron... those guys are a few of the forwards I would identify as elite. Today, Gaudreau is a top 5 LW in the game from what I have seen. If he shows a couple more years in the top 10-15 in scoring then he could be considered elite... he has the potential for sure. Vorachek, Foligno and Kessel have had good years where they were in the top 10 of scoring but then took a step back in the following year(s). I'm not sure which way he will go... my guess would be I see him working on his defensive game and being a perennial 70-80 point winger... in other words, a very valuable asset to any team.

IMO, today he is not worth $8M, regardless of term... it's a big of a gamble with only 2 years experience and only one of those 2 years that would warrant such a contract. To me it's 7 x $7-7.5M (tops), or 5 x $6.25-6.5M... if I were the Flames I would 'gamble' with the 7 year contract at $7M. I am sure that's what JG is looking for... him asking for 8, expecting the Flames to start at 6.5 and meeting somewhere in the middle.

This talk about him having a high probability of getting injured. ??? Why? He has the same chance of sustaining a serious injury as any other player... so far he has proven to be very durable.

Also, this talk about him wanting to play east so badly... if he wanted to do this then he could have easily gone UFA out of college and the east teams would have been lining up to sign him.

Is a young player like that really worth that much? I don't know if I would be happy paying him that. Obviously you don't want to lose a player like him, but 8m seems a bit rough.

My reaction exactly. The salaries for people just exiting their ELC are getting ridicilous raises based on 1 or 2 good season.

Not worth it yet, but probably will be. Thing is that's a heck of a lot of money to throw at a player even if he has had a few good seasons. You just never know.

Not sure why this thread has received so many replies. To me it's very obvious in 99% of all sports related negotiations.

1. Player Agent: Asks for more money
2. GM: Offers less
3 The Contract eventually meets somewhere int the middle

How hard is that to understand? If Gaudreau or his Agent actually wanted $8M, then they would've started the negotiations at $9M. Looks to me that they'll eventually settle somewhere in the $7 range.

Comparing Gadreau to Gretzky?

Comparing two guys who avoid hits. Seems like a pretty good comparable if ya ask me.
Not seeing why thats such an offensive statement.
My god they are/were both good at avoiding contact. Pretty tough concept to grasp

Gaudreau finished 33rd in league scoring his rookie year and then 7th his second season. A bit better than '1 or 2 good seasons' wouldn't you say?

I hate to point this out, but you listed year 1 and 2 which is literally the definition of '1 or 2 good seasons'.

Let's put it this way. Monahan got 6.3 right? Can we all agree that Gaudreau is better than Money by quite a bit?

I agree that Tarasenko money is what he is worth but if he is going 8m or sitting out/asking for a trade (which I doubt very very much) it won't cripple us. Every team overplays early to get a deal later.

Problem is he's an RFA for 5 years. That restricts what he's going to get, because no other team is going to step in and offer the picks and money that will be required to get him.

In my opinion he'll either get 8 years at around 7.25 per; 7 years at 7 per; or a 3-year bridge at around what Monahan is getting or a bit less.

Why would Gaudreau sign a deal that you yourself declare to be an "absolute steal"?

Shouldn't Calgary be looking to lock him up to anything under 8 million for as long as possible?

As opposed to signing a 6? Million bridge now and than having to sign him to a long term 10 million dollar contact?
