No, I don't think it backfired. I think this was the hope.
Yeah which is fair enough, Vanecek might be somewhat serviceable for some games. The thing I worry about is if Vanecek is out for a couple weeks , and Georgiev continues to be horrid and Askarov looks good in his games, it’ll be a pretty bad message to send him down instead of firing Georgiev into the sun where he probably should beThe plan has clearly been to keep Askarov in the AHL not because he needs a ton more development (no more crazy passes with the puck, no cheating too much to the near side) but because they want another high pick. If Vanacek didn't bravely protect the fans from the puck with his face, they would have rotated those two for the rest of the year unless one of them started playing well enough to trade for whatever someone will give.
we're developing our D to shut down 100% of all chances. If you legitimately thought that then you drank Mike's kool-aid.
My point is not about Mack leaving. Good on him. He deserved a chance to be on a contender. But, and I've said this numerous times, there is only ONE reason for Georgie to be getting any games and that's for losses. I would honestly rather they cut bait with Georgie, bring in someone else behind Vanacek (not Askarov). Everything about Georgie on and off the ice seems incredibly demoralizing.
I think Mike wanted Georgiev to want to play against Colorado because any other goalie on our roster would have won that game. That’s fair, I disagree. Most teams would let their new goalie play their former team
I agree. If Askarov plays really well, you have to let him keep the job.Yeah which is fair enough, Vanecek might be somewhat serviceable for some games. I mean the Avs didn't give us a 2nd and Kovalenko because Georgiev is a competitive NHL goalie at this time. Add up georgiev and kovalenko and that's the value of that move even before you consider the 2nd. even if you are keeping score like that it's not too much of a bummer. The fact that you suddenly seem to think this is terrible makes me question where you've been the last few years. This was always the plan. Acting as if it's unconscionable now when we're like 1/3rd of the way through the season is a weird pivot.
The team needs to be bad for the short term, Vanacek can't play because of a freak accident, and they might as well see if they can catch lightning in a bottle with Georgiev between now and the trade deadline on the off chance that some dumb, panicky team in need of a backup goalie can be sold in the idea that he's closer to what he used to be than what he is now and the last year and a bit with the Avs was some sort of horrible bump in the road.
It's not likely that the last thing happens but if they're are going to/need to lose games anyways there's no real significant harm in trying.
And yeah, yeah "culture" and all that. But it won't matter if it's just this year and maybe a slightly lesser degree next if that means the team can really swing around and compete afterwards. If they're still in the basement in 4 or 5 years then it's time to panic but for now this is the cost of doing business.
honestly it was a decent game against a stacked team. they legit outshot them and had a chance to win it.Some good news though guys...
I'm at Disneyland and didn't have to watch that mess haha
Legit 1st world problems here. Sharks outside of Celebrini, Smith, and Eklund raise my blood pressure and short my temper every so often lolGo to the Avs board… they hate their team lol 90% of their posters are more negative than any of our posters
I don't even know what questions you can ask a goalie at a press conference where he didn't play well other than "Why the hell couldn't you have stopped one or more of those goals?"Gorgiev with a question about what the defense could learn from this and said ‘not sure if it’s a mental thing, but we need to be smarter’ not at all acknowledging he gave up two softies to seal the loss… what a chode
Well played.we're developing our D to shut down 100% of all chances.
This is how he was in Colorado.Gorgiev with a question about what the defense could learn from this and said ‘not sure if it’s a mental thing, but we need to be smarter’ not at all acknowledging he gave up two softies to seal the loss… what a chode
The "culture" will be a hell of a lot better when the Sharks have not just Celebrini but another top-5 pick (potentially Schaefer) aroundAnd yeah, yeah "culture" and all that. But it won't matter if it's just this year and maybe a slightly lesser degree next if that means the team can really swing around and compete afterwards. They’d probably trade him to Colorado for Wedgewood.I agree. If Askarov plays really well, you have to let him keep the job.
I guarantee you this was not penciled as a win by anyoneI think Mike wanted Georgiev to want to play against Colorado because any other goalie on our roster would have won that game.
I think any other goalie would have won as well but I’m not ready to say he was played with the intention of losing when it was his former team he had 80 wins with over the last couple of seasons. If he gets the next start however….I think Mike wanted Georgiev to want to play against Colorado because any other goalie on our roster would have won that game.
I’m fine with the trade. But playing Georgie for whatever reason sends a clear message to the players of what is expected of them this year.I mean the Avs didn't give us a 2nd and Kovalenko because Georgiev is a competitive NHL goalie at this time. Add up georgiev and kovalenko and that's the value of that move even before you consider the 2nd. even if you are keeping score like that it's not too much of a bummer.

I’ve seen some goalies fall on their sword. He literally blamed the team and by using mental and with how he appeared on camera it was like he was calling them stupid… which yeah, some of the D do seem to have low hockey IQ, but to say that after the team played a decent game and you let in two saveable goals to lose the game is pretty damning to me.I don't even know what questions you can ask a goalie at a press conference where he didn't play well other than "Why the hell couldn't you have stopped one or more of those goals?"
I agree. He was played as an opportunity to show up his old team but everyone knew that wasn’t going to happen.I think any other goalie would have won as well but I’m not ready to say he was played with the intention of losing when it was his former team he had 80 wins with over the last couple of seasons. If he gets the next start however….
No I get where you're coming from on Georgiev. I just don't agree that Grier acquired him strictly to lose games. This is not based on what Grier had to say - this is based on my general stance on goalies which is that they're fairly random and unpredictable and most prime-aged goalies who have a track record of decent play are reasonable bets to get back to that even if they haven't been doing it lately. If you legitimately thought that then you drank Mike's kool-aid.
