GLASS HALF EMPTY - We got territorially mauled and hemmed in for 75% of the game by a feeble Calgary squad icing a lot of fringe NHLers.

GLASS HALF FULL - Team battled back when they had to be tired, and scored another bushel of goals...and this time it wasn't the Sedins doing all the heavy lifting.

:handclap: Well said.

Overall the Canucks are still a work in progress, but it's great to see them be able to pull off a big comeback in a situation where it'd be easy to mail it in.

Not going to win with that kind of play against a top team, but it was a pretty entertaining 3rd and OT.

Hamhuis absolutely deserves to be sub-20 right now—has been pretty awful in the first few games. May be a lingering issue, if so, honestly get him out of the lineup so it doesn't get worse.

I don't know. He's been playing very uncharacteristic of his flawless defensive play. It may be an injury (rumours of groin) that's putting him behind a step but I don't know whether it's that or not. His reads have been WAY off, getting caught up, bad pinches, lots of odd man rushes. It's kind of worrisome.

Bizarre game. Decent first 10 minutes, then 30 minutes of utterly awful hockey. Don't know if we completed more than 2 passes in a row during that 30-minute stretch. Skated like we were in sand and passed like we were drunk.

Then bailed ourselves out after some line juggling in the 3rd. Terrific play to win the game, but this sort of effort won't win against most teams.

On the flipside, Calgary played a very organized, disciplined game for 40+ minutes before falling apart when the floodgates opened. But showed a hell of a lot more heart than the Oilers did. Monahan is going to be a very good player for them.

- glad the team bailed out Lack. He was better tonight than the final numbers indicate. Good performance for his first NHL win.

- Hamhuis was terrible. Worst game as a Canuck, or close to it. Ended up being demoted/benched, and had his lowest TOI as a Canuck (by almost 2 minutes!) in a game where he wasn't hurt. Just uncharacteristically poor decision-making.

- Bieksa actually wasn't bad tonight, and in a weird turn of fortune was the guy bailing out Hamhuis much of the time. Great play on the winner.

- Garrison-Edler pairing was very good for the most part. Garrison with another strong, and Edler was much better tonight than you'd think by reading this thread.

- Tanev was pretty decent as well. But Stanton is really a revelation right now. Saw his minutes upped tonight, and looked terrific. Unlike Alberts, he actually looks to pass the puck before he'll just waste if off the boards. And has legitimate mobility. Looks like a legitimate NHL player - props to the pro scouts. What's lost on the OT winner was how quickly Stanton turned around the play back up the ice with a strong outlet pass ... ended up with his first NHL point on the play.

- Sedins were horrible through 2 periods. Then, for the first time ever, splitting them up actually worked. Bizarre. Big efforts to pull out the result tonight.

- 2nd line was pretty mediocre tonight. Kesler fought the puck and didn't do much. Booth is incredibly frustrating - moments of legitimate quality where he drives the play forward, then moments of total crapness.

- Higgins is snakebit right now. Must have had 6-8 quality chances through the first 3 games and nothing to show for it. Needs to keep bearing down.

- thought Santorelli was rubbish through two periods. But then he got two chances late and buried them both. Nice to have a good set of hands further down the lineup.

- Richardson again looked solid. Improving after a poor preseason. Does well on the PK.

- Weise has quietly played a solid three-zone game the past couple nights after being promoted to the 3rd line. Happy to see him score a big goal.

- 4th line again barely played. Sestito continues to look a bit better than he looked last year.

________

As noted earlier in the thread, Sedins have to get more PP time. 40 seconds on a 2-minute PP isn't enough. Especially when we only get one in a game like tonight.

forwards when healthy:

sedin sedin kassian
burrows kesler hansen
santorelli richardson higgins
booth schroeder dalpe
weise tostitos

with booth and richardson switching and santo moving to the middle if necessary. AV isn't here anymore, and we can roll a defensively liable fourth line with some real skill 7 mins a game. i mean, with the kesler line handling all the toughest minutes and matchups, and the third line grinding too, why not?

of course, all this is only if richardson and santorelli can keep up this kind of play, and keep chipping in offensively here and there. but that's a pretty good hardworking third line. and i can see them bringing out the best in higgins.

and a tougher, grindier team than we've seen in a while right? airlift in a couple of scoring vets before the deadline and you won't hear me complaining.

I have been pretty happy with the direction the team has been moving in with Torts new system. It's much more aggressive and really puts pressure on the opposing team. Already we are a harder team to play again.... and we're still learning the new system.

I wasn't expecting the Canucks to have a good record for the first 10-15 games as the team learned the new system, but hopefully the last two games is a sign of things to come. Never give up, constantly pushing the opposition... and a hard working motivated group.

Really starting to enjoy watching this.

Im liking that rolling 4 lines.

Yeah I'd be alright with that, provided Schroeder can fit into Torts' system. Would love if we acquired a nice scoring RWer though, maybe push one of the 4th liners to 13th forward.

Weise: 3-1-0-1
Richardson: 3-1-1-3
Santorelli: 3-2-0-2

B-but guys. Our third line sucks. It can't score. Who didn't give them the memo?!

Let's not get carried away. Richardson and Weise, especially, could easily go pointless for the next 20 games.

They do look pretty good though. At least Richardson and Santorelli aren't project players and they're both proven. Richardson was a key utility player on a Cup winning team and Santorelli has a 20 goal season under his belt.

Noted sarcasm, mate. I was only teasing the constant whining about how awful they supposedly are. Sure, it could change. But let's enjoy the gift horse without looking in his mouth for the time being.

Because for the first time ever, they were given a few shifts to get it going, instead of AV doing it for 1. Cause if they don't score right away, it clearly doesn't work :shakehead

Doesn't necessarily have to be a RW, im actually content with Burrows and Hansen being the top 2 RW's. Daniel is money obviously, but Higgins or Booth as #2 LW would be my main area of concern with the roster really. If MG wants to try and go 'all in' at the deadline again I hope we're going after a star playmaking LW.

It seemed like the team was fired up coming out of the gate and played well for the first ten minutes. They seemed to hit a wall after that and didn't seem to pick it up again until the beginning of the 3rd. I would have liked to have heard what Torts said to them after the 3rd. Their pace was noticeably better after the 2nd intermission.
