The people that take joy from destroying a much lesser opponent are the embarrassment. It's decidedly un-Canadian but I guess we've gotta blow all that excess testosterone somehow, eh.

The embarrassment is the suggestion that the better team should simply stop trying so everyone can feel all warm and fuzzy after the game. Playing hard whistle-to-whistle is the best way to show respect for your opponent.

I got to see the first game since 1983 where two players got a hat trick in the same game. Even stacked teams in the past 25 years didn't do that. It would not have happened if they decided up 4 to just stop playing. It is not about taking joy from destroying an opponent. It is about a gold medal. You play as hard as you can and win or lose, shake hands at the end.

It's not ****ing house league. Play the game the way it comes to you and still do it with respect like they did and move on. I hate the whole aww shucks participation award stuff that goes on now.
Who's advocating for participation awards? I just wanna win with some class, I'm glad Canada had an amazing game but the 3rd period got out of hand.

When goal differentials come into play in competitions like this one, I have no problem with teams scoring as many goals as possible.

With every game having a winner, the goal differences matter only when there is three teams with equal points.

Also it might have effect on which is "home" team in medal games.

In 2006 and earlier it had actually more effect - think those rules and Canada drawing with Russia. But it works in both ways, in games like this Denmark has a reason to try to keep the game as close as possible if they draw their game against second-worst team.

As long as you aren’t over the top celebrating goals and taking runs at people no issue running up the score, for many years every other country but Canada did it

Participation Award mentality is for underachievers and floaters
It is pretty clear Canada is the only country that carries this burden.

Russia runs up the score and it is "ZOMG! skill"

How did it get out of hand though? Just play the game don't stop trying or putting the puck on net but don't be disrespectful....pretty much exactly what they did. They aren't 10 years old and need a hug and a pat on the head after a rough night.

Yeah guys are going to jump tons of spots in the draft on the backs of pasting denmark.
They look at individual stats, not box scores. I recon someone who scores a goal or two in the World Juniors is going to get more interest than someone who was held off the score sheet all tournament. At the very least, it can't hurt their chances.

By everyone. So many people see Russia as the arrogant bad guys, so if they ran up the score like this they'd definitely get a lot of crap for it.

Russia has kicked the piss out of developing programs for years and people never say anything

you are projecting.

how do you know someone will quit because of a loss like this?

i say this will make their team stronger. now what?
Yeah its worked great for women's hockey,

Great!

Becuase a lot of these Danish kids are not going onto the nhl, and they can in their golden years bring their grandkids to their laps and regale them that when they reached the pinnacle of their hockey careers, it was capped by getting pasted in the very first game.

lets give every team a trophy while we are at it.

this isnt some local tourney...... this is a tourney of the best in the WORLD in their age group.

sorry but hockey simply isnt a global sport. we are a few years away from an end to the relegation revolving door. deal with it and SHUT UP. you hurt development... canada helps.

You're right it's not a global sport and a lack of competiveness where Canadian women beat Bulgaria 18 0 is going to be the death cross of it.

I didn't even watch the game today because I knew it would be a bore fest. Clearly a good decision on my part.

um, welcome to the real world????

But maybe by running up the score we might get some of these Danish kids to simply quit and then its like the woman's game light.

That's what people are clamoring to see, games that are settled before the puck is dropped.
You do realize that cutting the tournament down to six teams would do more harm than good to the development of the lesser nations, right? These games may be over before they start and mildly uncomfortable/boring to watch at times, but without them countries like Denmark and Kazakhstan and whoever else will never improve in the long run. There's only so much they'll learn and improve playing against the likes of Austria or Japan or Italy year after year. They need to play against better teams to learn. The hope is they take away something from these games and pass the knowledge down to younger players later in the careers, or while they're coaching, so that the gap narrows in future generations with help from increased funding, interest, etc.

It's why the talk to further reduce the participation numbers of the women's game doesn't make sense either. It takes time to develop successful sports programs and for a lot of the countries in women's hockey, they're either just starting out or relatively new compared to Canada and the United States.

I imagine its hard to say who looked good...probably easier to pick out who looked bad. So I ask, who was weak for Canada.
Lafrene and Anderson Dolan and Suzuki that whole line looks like they have no chemistry. Suzuki is a difference maker and needs the luck on his stick and it looks like he keeps getting himself in wide open spots only to watch the puck be given away and then head back into their own zone.
