I find it hard to believe that Leivo is this polished diamond that is in great demand throughout the league but Babcock just will not play him because of stubbornness.
That's not the reason though. Leivo isn't played because we have the best depth in the league, and while he's a tremendous young player, so are the guys he competes against.

I wonder if the Leafs are tying to figure out if they need go out for a defender, or if one of the two Swedes makes the thought irrelevant.
You wonder? When Babcock says they're undecided for the Last 2 spots to start the season what do you think he meant? You think Polak is hanging around just cause?

Give it game 6 - 7 the rotations will stop and when Polak is 100% he'll be re-signed. My call on Polak is early Novemeber he'll be re-signed. There's no point on putting him on the cap until he's ready and the decisions on the 3 between Rosen, Borgman and Carrick and the decision between Moore and Fehr is made.

I don't think you know who Josh Leivo is. He's been great in every game since last year. Something happened last summer that made Babcock mad at him. He's 10x the player Martin is.

That depends on how you compare Martin and Leivo. Obviously Babs favours what Martin brings to the table over what Leivo does.

Legend:

Letter Grades = Quality of Competition measured by opponents' time on ice, Converted into Letter Grades for simplicity
p60 = points per 60 minutes
xGF% = Expected Goals For Percentage (i.e. shot attempt percentage adjusted for shot quality) - this stat is already adjusted for zone deployment and game score
rel = xgf% relative to team - also already adjusted for zone and score

(as per corsica, all stats other than ice time do not include empty net situations.)

We got us a conspiracy theory then. A great young player is being destroyed by a vengeful coach. Wait til the player's association hears of this! This coach did the same thing to Frankie Corrado last year and just look at the superstar status Frankie has achieved since freed from Babcockian tyranny. Matt Martin? Just because he has played as a regular in the league for years does not mean he is one tenth the player that pre-season phenom and regular season bench warmer Josh Leivo is? You are right. I know a different Josh Leivo than the budding superstar described here.

We have to be much better defensively. We've allowed far too many high quality shots over the past 2 games. Do that again against a hot team and we'll be toast.

For his role we have only one Mat Martin that's why he dress every game. Leivo's competition to dress isn't Martin.

True and I posted my thoughts on that on another thread but you said Leivo is 10x the player Martin is (hence the comparison). Leivo is not a better option than any of our other 11 forwards but he could spell Brown or a slumping forward for a game or two.

I agree. The largest issue with Leivo is his speed. Anyone who watches hockey should notice this. If he had that half step more, he would be in all the time. This garbage with Martin again, give it a rest. Hyman showed his worth to all the haters last game. I will say it again with Martin. He is not there to score, he brings size, toughness, and veteran poise. We have Brownie on the 4th line as a scoring threat, so take your pick, do you want Brown or Leivo in? You cant fill a line with all scorers. They want the puck on their stick. You put Leivo on that line now and itd be a disaster. He cannot get back defensively either because of his lack of speed. Leivo is a good player but we are too deep. I think he gets traded along with Curtis within the month for an upgrade on Carrick, and maybe Carrick moves as well. If you trade all 3 to the same team that would warrant a really nice upgrade I think.

I hope they move on from Polak. I hope they see that they need to look forward and not clog the roster with Polak. The only way I'd be OK with Polak coming back is if he is parked in the press box while the young d-men play on the bottom pair. I am not OK with him playing every night.

I agree to a certain point but the man can clear the front of the net, I like Polak on the pk but his first pass outlet is horrible lol

Leivo has to play in the top 9 with a very responsible two way centre that is a good set-up man (not enough of those around I know). The line would also require a right winger who was great at zone entries and fast enough to cover defensively. Leivo is a cycle player that can work the boards and either go to the net or find the open ice in front. If he is properly complemented, he could be a good addition to a young team. His marginal skating and defense really holds him back with this team in particular, whereas other teams might make good use of his shot and hands.

Tonight, a bold prediction, that the Bozak line will have a good night. They will bounce back for this game.

A cynical person will say that they have to bounce back and be better. If they are not on the ice for 3 goals against, automatically that means they were better.

However, the Chicago Black Hawks are a skating team, and that line should be able to skate with them.

Marner seems to be trying to do too much. Simplify his game tonight, and the whole line will be better.

I always liked Santorelli and Winnik. They had a nice contrast of professionalism and work ethic compared to our core at the time. Kessel mocking Santorelli for his workout regime. Can't even imagine that happening with our current group.

The difference is Frankie showed nothing in his limited NHL action, while Leivo put up 10 points in 13 games last year, compared to Martin who had 9 points in 82 games. Your comparison isn't very good.
