it was only three games ago that we had scorers up-and-down the line-up in san jose; santorelli and richardson were on hot streaks, before that, henrik had the longest run of points in the league; kesler and daniel were both looking beastly to start the season.

we have been singularly unlucky, tonight and in anaheim, and if you make big changes to the body of the top-6 right now it's a mistake.

If you depend on guys like Richardson and Santorelli to provide offense year-long, you're employing smoe very faulty logic, and a recipe for disaster.

Go home, you're drunk

burrows is a heart and soul guy. A leader in the room. A supremely good defensive player. A guy you can put on the first, second, third or fourth line.

Because he has not been scoring in the small 10 game segment or whatever he has played so far this year is an incredibly dumb reason to declare him a bust and trade him.

yay but burrows is the new old kesler who is the old bieska who is the old old old kesler

No, but he does have six goals in his last 40 games. I think if he doesn't start remembering where the net is pretty soon you have to start to get a little concerned.

Luongo didn't flop on Hertl's goal. He was in position to stop Boyle's shot, Boyle fanned and it went to Hertl. 3 defensemen went down leaving Hertl open, so when Boyle fanned on it and it luckily went to Hertl, there was no one to take him. Luongo reached out as far as he physically could(NOT flopping) but Hertl lifted the puck enough to make the attempt futile.

There's always a reason why it's not Luongo's fault. Just once though, once....I'd like to see him shut the door in the final minute. He just never, ever, seems to. It's incredibly frustrating.

still not enough to declare him toast and trade him. He means too much to the team.

Pretty much every forward outside of H. Sedin, Santorelli, and Richardson is underperforming offensively. It's still early, but these are some pretty stark looking 82 game scoring paces:

D. Sedin: 66 pts
Kesler: 55 pts
Higgins: 39 pts
Hansen: 30 pts
Burrows: 27 pts
Booth: 21 pts

Edler and his 27 point pace is also pretty disappointing.

A better PP would fix some of this, but there are still issues. Booth and his contract might almost singlehandedly submarine the Canucks' ability to have legitimate scoring depth.

You may call it underperforming, but those guys aren't going to score more than that for the rest of their careers.

We need a re-build, this will still likely make the playoffs, but our chances of winning the Cup are slim to none.

We played a hell of a game except scoring and burying our chances, defensively, our board battles, our work ethic, gap control, were all very impressive and we had plenty of chances, against a top hockey team.

This is not a game people should be drawing conclusions from that were somehow not good.

Agreed. The team seems to be grasping Tort's system and the work ethic along the boards and defensive pinches appear to be improving with each game. I am more concerned with the lack of finish (proven goal scorers) on those second chances, rebounds etc.

As the past few games have shown, if the Sedin's and Kesler aren't putting the puck in the net, who really is in the bottom 9? Hansen isn't the answer, he will certainly improve the depth, but the Nucks' need a bonafide top 6 forward in the mix.

This must be evident to the management group, just hope they make a move before the team starts losing ground. Need some finish.

See that Versteeg was just traded to the Hawks, not who I had in mind but hope GMMG is working the phones.

Hope they come out blazing on Sunday against the Stars.

He has two shutouts this season, so once could reason that he's done it at least twice at this point.

I can see how you can fault Luongo for the OT goal, but the tying goal is not at all on him imo.

Not only that but the Canucks have been playing some very very very good teams lately. To look at how many goals the canucks have scored against San Jose, Anaheim, LA and Phoenix and come to the conclusion that they can't score (this year) is faulty. The canucks are tied for 11th in the league in goals for. They haven't been excellent at scoring these last few games but as everyone knows (or at least should) good teams don't give up very many goals even against other good teams, that's what makes them good teams.

Good post.

In this game, two good teams were at 1-0 for 59 min of the game. Both teams were not filling the net. I really feel the Canucks could have shut out the Sharks this game, given the run of play.

I wonder how many shutouts he has lost in the last minute in his career. I'd love to see the stats for goalies who have allowed the most goals in the final 5 minutes of hockey games....career. Sure seems to be a common feature of Lu's game.

Leino has 40 goals in 236 games (10 goals in his last 80+ games). There's struggling, and there's crap.

I don't understand how people can watch this game and not walk away feeling positive. Yes the canucks lost, that sucks, however when that feeling fades people have to remember how they actually played. They dominated the sharks, they didn't put very many pucks in the net but they carried the play. This bodes well for the rest of the year and for me personally after seeing last years' play where they looked like they were on auto pilot half the time, the way they are playing this year should inspire confidence. Enjoy how this team is playing people!

Why do people keep saying the team is good? They severely lack firepower up front. There's no way to sugar coat it.

Yeah, you can say they "just need to add this or that" but right now they don't have a 2nd line centre or a winger that can finish. We have Kesler playing RW, what a mess. I cringe every time i see a lineup on paper with him on that top line.

2nd line centre
top line winger
3rd line centre

Basically this team needs those 3 things. Until then, the Canucks are mediocre to middle of the pack. Hopefully we can pick those things up in free agency and maybe one of the prospects makes the team next year. I'm ok with the fact that we suck this year but it annoys me when people on here get bashed for calling the team what it is, which is a 7th/8th seed calibre team going by the old playoff format.

Yup. He did not score in the last 10 games, so lets ignore everything he has done for the team in the last 5 years, ignore all the intangibles he brings and trade him right away.

Burrows never really put up numbers unless he was playing with the Twins. He has not been playing with the Twins this year.

[T]hey look like an excellent club and have come out of the 1st 20 games looking as good as they have in the last decade. Not good enough for fans of this team though.

This is quite a bit of hyperbole, in my opinion.

They dominated the Leafs and have played well against the Sharks with middling results. Outside of that they have four regulation wins against the Flyers, Sabres, Oilers and Capitals.

I think we are an okay team, but excellent? Much like last year we rely on the OT/SO to get us points and have a hard time finishing teams off. That counts for something. It's one thing to say we "deserved to win" because we played hard. It's another to say that we're an excellent team because we often look good out there. At some point, actually scoring actual goals and actually beating teams counts for something.

We are an okay team. We are maybe a good team. I think we need to add some pieces before we call ourselves "excellent."

And yes, I've been saying this since before this recent skid so please don't go there. I'm the guy that suggested we shouldn't rely on Santorelli for offense and got stomped for it cause he was still on his streak.

They are fine at 3rd line centre. Richardson or Santorelli are ok. Kesler if he reverts back to Centre is more than capable as a second line player.

A sniping winger would be nice. I'd also love to see an offensive d-man - someone who could run a PP. Dan Boyle would be perfect for Vancouver - they have to go find someone like him.....somehow.
