I'm simply suggesting a guy who we still have to pay a huge contract to may be looked at to see what he's worth. I don't mean to pick on him I just see him as our best chance of getting a #1 Dman. Could I ask what a better way to get a #1 Dman be?

Wait and see how far Ryan Murray comes this year, for one.

Look at the opponent tonight, who possesses two legitimate #1 defensemen that were both 9th-round picks. One of them (Byfuglien) wasn't even established as a defenseman full-time until about three years ago, and even into last year there were questions over whether to move him back up front.

(WARNING IN ADVANCE: THIS POST CONTAINS AN OLD BASEBALL REFERENCE. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ IT, SCROLL PAST IT. THIS WARNING IS LONGER THAN THE ACTUAL POST WILL BE)

That's incorrect. If we never had issues with Joey before we wouldn't be so quick to consider moving him.

Even Connie Mack, who had an ironclad system of exactly what he wanted in his players as far as attitude and temperament, was willing to bend and (perhaps more important) be patient with young players possessing superb talent.

I do believe that Murray will become a legit #1 at some point in the future and overall the future looks bright for defense. The problem is that there might not be enough time to wait. Looks like the fanbase is getting restless and poor play is going to hurt the business. Jarmo has one season left on his contract after this season. If he makes it there, he has to have something to show for it. It might not be healthy for this franchise in the long run, but this franchise needs to have success soon. If Jarmo wants to keep his job, he has to start making high risk and possibly controversial trades.

Considering the track record in big trades that don't involve the other team being crushed against the salary cap...

Ryan Murray has played 90 NHL regular season games including last night.

It's really hard to expect him to be a true #1 pairing guy. If one combines his pro and junior injuries, he's essentially a 19 year old entering his second NHL season.

If your name isn't Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque or Paul Coffey, most 19 year olds aren't standout NHL dman. Patience is the key with this kid.

There were three teams near the bottom of the standings that year that had a GM under fire for one reason or another. One was the Islanders with Garth Snow. One was Winnipeg with Kevin Cheveldayoff (whose mantra seemed to be "do nothing and see what happens"). One was Columbus.

The former two teams kept their GMs despite fan outrage, and have seen that pay off as the consistent vision has turned their respective teams into legitimate contenders. The latter team did not.

That said, I will never dispute the passion of the people who showed up, and there are certainly some knowledgeable folks among them. I'm mentioning this only to point out that:
1) Not all change is good, even if it appears to be necessary, and
2) There's undoubtedly a ton that goes on behind the scenes that no one knows about

It's not right to suggest that Howson had a consistent vision. In reality he changed his plans frequently - to match Hitch's team, to get the uptempo team for Arniel, the summer of ambition, and finally when he had no choice but to trade Carter and Nash. That he won most of his trades and drafted well is what makes me a Howson fan, but "consistent vision", no.

Cheveldayoff is definitely a good example of a consistent vision. Doing nothing. And it's working.

Snow is a bit all over the place and has plenty of misses. Really what saved his gig is the huge win on the Leddy and Boychuk trades. Bold action to fix his D. And it worked.

Only took 58 minutes to get some desperation.

Sadly yes. In person at the game we just seemed so down, almost already expecting to lose. Could tell just from warm ups the mood was down. First noticed this while attending the Chicago game. We just don't even come out hyped anymore.

We are finished tonight, I should leave and go to the bar now but I'm a glutten for punishment so I'll sit here and watch them get their teeth kicked in for 2 more hours

Lol.. I was down in 102 on the glass again tonight thinking how crazy I am dropping $ on glass seats for this team.

Lowest point in as long as I can remember with this team... That 4 minute power play we got dominated on with the boo-birds (myself included) raining down.

Yet I'll be back the next home game because I'm too damn loyal of a fan.

Just so there's no confusion here, the suggestion that I'm seeing is to trade:
- A legitimate #1 center (the first in franchise history)
- who just turned 23 years old
- who has 59 goals and 134 points in the last two seasons

Because of a single ten-game stretch to start a season?

Preach :handclap:

For those of you who hate hockey because the Blue Jackets make it terrible, I encourage you to approach the game agnostically, and just find players you really like and just follow them. It made those lean years during the Arniel/Howson days much more bearable. You'll learn to love players who are just flat out good, and you can still appreciate a game when you're not worried about the construction of the team around that player.

I'll go first: I love P.K. Subban, and my new hotness is Jack Eichel.

If the (otherwise) best team in the NHL paid their franchise goalie 7+ a million a year, and through 12 games he was the worst goalie in the NHL, would they have a winning record?

I don't say this to trivialize our other problems, mind you.

I don't know why, but home ( Nationwide) games were and are problematical for us. Today, today .. it's strange but team played well ( well for b-2-b). We simply need a little bit fortune, we had very dangerous moments today and we were better than Jets, we played better ( yep, better). Tortorella needs some time for lines configuration but I believe that team will be ok soon. I am sure team needs our support right now, not booing. Carry the Flag!

Um, the Jets skated circles around us until the final three minutes.

 You are very skeptical. I didn't notice it ( that Jets skated around us). Yes we tried play for Mac and it looked like whole line statically stayed in own zone and only blocked shots:) But it is part of the process, this is Bob's culpa when your comrades need to hurt if you personally suck. I trust it will be best motivator for Bob

They held us to like 15 shots until the final 3 minutes. They even tripled us on the shot clock at one point (like 4 to 16). Sure, Bob wasn't good. But we got worked tonight

On the boo's

“It’s definitely disappointing,” Blue Jackets defenseman Ryan Murray said. “They have a point, but…there has to be some loyalty there, too.

“It’s not that we don’t deserve them, but at the same time, we’re trying to do everything we can. We’re not going half-assed out there. We’d appreciate it if they’d be on our side a little more.”

This is true to me. Watching those guys on the four minute PP, you could tell they were trying...this is a mentally fragile group I think
