I just don’t think it has been a focus. It’s mostly been at forward and a sprinkle of Dee as well. And then more flyers on goalies. I think we need a top 3 round goalie pick next year or possibly the next (or both).

Dee is also lacking on prospect depth, especially in Hershey. Really just Iorio. Chesley might have a higher ceiling and i hope he goes pro next year. Muggli is interesting too and Hudson but they are both 3-5 years away so a lot to see in their development before they are true NHL prospects. Good news is our core Dee is under 27.
Yeah I was contemplating the not so great depth. I know the spent two 2nd rounders this past draft but it takes years generally for D to maturate. Allen and Chesley getting to Hershey would a nice development. Is Iorio still waver exempt next year?

Not that I disagree those guys are way better than who we have now, but when you look at the list of goalies the Caps drafted or signed as UDFAs since the Samsonov pick, I think Hunter Shepard's the only one to even get a cup of coffee in the NHL. I doubt having Prior or Korn over the last 8 years would've made a difference unless those guys were involved in the draft process (which, maybe they were, I honestly don't know).

Yea I was very very surprised they went F in the 1st last draft. Think there's definitely been a change in draft philosophy since ~2018 in terms of what kinds of D and F they are targeting and when. Maybe organizational change in philosophy about goalies too?

This also is certainly a big factor.

Iorio is not waivers exempt next year. We have six who graduate to waivers including Iorio, Gibson, Rybinski, Trineyev, Stevenson, Shepherd.

Heard Cohen talking about Leonard having a home in the Caps top six and I'm not sure that's the case now. It may have been last spring or coming into this season. It's been something of a blessing in disguise him returning because otherwise maybe McMichael and/or Protas don't break out like they have.

Now there's more of a 3RW with PP time spot for him when he's ready. Perhaps even PP1 in the bumper spot since they still need a legit Oshie replacement. Of course there's still the potential for him to play up the lineup 5v5 if he's going and others not so much. Deep depth coming soon hopefully and in a more insulated role for him that one would think should allow for a relatively easy, favorable and less demanding transition.

So much to like about Leonard! he is a gamer! I think his role is going to be a dangerous 3RW for at least a couple or years. That is a better role for a not even 20 year old.

roster spots are about to get really hard to earn. And some promising youth barking at the door!
