At a Kings season ticket holder event Thursday at The Novo in downtown Los Angeles, team general manager Rob Blake said the injured back of
top prospect Gabe Vilardi is “definitely a concern” and later listed Vilardi as “probably doubtful” for the team’s upcoming rookie camp that starts Sept. 7.
Vilardi aggravated the injury that limited him to 32 games last season with the Kingston Frontenacs during training over the summer shortly before the World Junior Summer Showcase, where he was supposed to play for Team Canada. The injury was announced in late July and Blake said Vilardi resumed skating by himself this week.
The Kings noted the issue could be taken care of with proper upkeep by the player.
“It’s really hard to explain to an 18-, 19-year-old that you have to have daily maintenance,” Blake said to the crowd. “And I think a lot of us when we played and later in your career you naturally acquire that maintenance but to tell a 19-year-old you have to do a certain routine every day to be able to skate – it takes time to resonate. It’s our strength and conditioning group and it’s our rehab group working with Gabe to get that underlying fact that you know, ‘You’re going to have to maintain this throughout your career and you’re going to have to do a lot of extra work that a lot of guys with a healthy back don’t have to do.’”
