I don't take any comfort in them saying "He's progressing". What else were they gonna say really?

"nothing to report?" "holding pattern," like they said earlier this summer?

I mean I get what you're saying that it's a bit of an empty statement but there's definitely worse given it's a long-term thing. What if they announced him as "out" for camp already instead of "doubtful?" "progressing" is sadly the most positive news we've gotten since his AHL games.

The fact no decision has been made yet on his availability for camps is encouraging to me. It could be as simple as waiting until scan results are seen before they red or green flag it. I say that because if it was uncertainty, based on general symptoms, like still occasionally having pain I’d bet he’d have been ruled out of camp already. Given he’s ‘progressing’ hopefully it will reduce some of the ‘he’s done’ hyperbole, at the very least.

The only thing positive or negative I can take away is that there haven’t been any major setbacks in Vilardi’s recovery. Now we’ll have to see if he makes it to training camp.

25 years from now I envision a statue of Vilardi outside of Staples Center. It's up to you to say what his pose will be.

There's really nothing to make of the recent news on Vilardi other than the fact that he's still not ready for any on-ice activity. Until he's cleared to take contact, Vilardi is an urban legend.

I demand to see proof of his existence.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Gabriel Vilardi

How many first line centers did not play a single NHL game until they were 20+ years old?

Genuine question. Not trying to start a bitch fit.

What is wrong with him that he's only progressing at this point? Is he paralyzed?

I’ve always thought he has some sort of degenerative spinal issue that became more pronounced as he grew older and bigger.

No athlete or normal human being should have chronic back issues at 18/19/20 years old.

Who cares at this point? :dunno: We're gonna suck again and I'm okay with him resting for another 3-6 months.

I'd be ecstatic if we see him in some AHL games for as long as needed until a cup of coffee with the big club towards the end of this season.

Bigger picture on the offensive end...

I'll leave it up to the eye of the beholder to proclaim which of the following names are first line centers, but here's a list I came up with off the top of my head.

Brad Richards, scored 62 points as a 20-year-old rookie.
Mike Richards posted 34 points in 79 games.
Jeff Carter was actually 21 in his first year, scored 23 goals and 42 points in 81 games.
Ryan Getzlaf scored 39 points in 57 games as a 20-year-old rookie.
Logan Couture only played in 25 games, put up 9 points, and added 4 goals in 15 playoff games in his rookie year.

And Vilardi from the past, Jason Allison, appeared in a handful of games until he was 21. That's when he played in 72 games and scored 34 points (and was also dealt to Boston at the deadline for Adam Oates).

Interesting to wonder if those 2003 draft class centers would have debuted as 19 year olds if it were not for the lockout.

Maybe a better way to phrase the question is how many 11th overall picks did not play a single NHL game in their 20 year old season. Because that's where his value lies, where he was picked in the draft according to the free market.

It’s very likely, although it seems like that extra year of development in the minors helped a few of those players in making the jump to the NHL.

That said, I highly doubt we’ll see Vilardi appear in an NHL game this upcoming season.

Yeah. The real question is how many #1 centers didn't play but two or three games in their draft + 2 season after only playing half a season of Juniors in their draft + 1 year while also missing pretty much every rookie and training camp since being drafted?

I was going to ask what they meant by progressing, like, was he progressing towards his next birthday? Should have posted yesterday instead of putting the phone away since today actually is his birthday. Point is, progressing means nothing to me except for "no setbacks". Could totally be stuck in neutral as not having any setbacks at this point actually is progressing for him.

Not being ruled out for TC doesn't really mean much to me either. It is most likely a formality at this point but they don't have to officially say it yet. I'm still not expecting anything until January since that's the only time frame that has worked for him so far.
