This is ridiculous. Of course the goal for the CBJ for this season is to make the playoffs. After a season or two of making the playoffs and perhaps winning a playoff game or (dare I say it?) a playoff series the CBJ can start talking about winning the Stanley Cup as the goal.

If you can't win the Cup, then there's no point in qualifying for the playoffs apparently.

We could have gotten a crappy conditional pick just for dealing his negotiating rights in the summer. I see no way to paint this as a positive unless we get Vanek in 20 minutes. Bring back Howson.

The Blues somehow managed to improve drastically (even though they were already elite) as soon as JD and Jarmo left. All the success the Jackets have had is due to Scott Howson's "bricks" not the current front offices. Here's the scorecard so far.

Howson
Todd Richards, Ryan Johansen, Ryan Murray, Jack Johnson, James "sleeper Norris candidate" Wisniewski, Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Ansimov, Sergei Bobrovsky, Cam Atkinson, Nick Foligno, Nikita Nikita, Fedor :shakehead Tyutin, Boone Jenner

JD/Jarmo
Blake Comeau, Jack Skille, Matt Frattin, Corey Tropp, an awful Jared Boll contract extension, Illari Melart, Curtis McElhinney, Jody Shelley between the glass, 1 year of Marian Gaborik, exiling the classiest vet the team had in Vinny Prospal, NICK SHULTZ, and a massive UFA deal for a thus far underwhelming Nathan Horton.

For all the talk of the brick by brick approach, aside from hopefully Wennberg, JD and Jarmo haven't brought a single useful brick to the foundation unless they are trying to build a children's treehouse out of NHL fourth line grinders.

Terribly flawed analysis.

After the Gaborik trade, JD went on NHL live, TSN, CBC, the Puck Daddy Podcast, and every other media outlet he could find giving interviews and soaking up the media coverage and all the puff pieces written about him and how he's single handedly made the jackets respectable contenders and what a bold move it was.

Wonder if he's going to make the PR tour this time after dumping Gabby and acquiring two scrubs.

And exactly how long has Jarmo had to equal what Howson did?

two seasons, one offseason, two trade deadlines. plenty of time to develop and draft guys.

but the list of his moves and transactions thus far does little to inspire confidence. the fact that they made such a big media push around the gaborik trade, just to not even approach contract in the summer and then dump him for nothing also makes me question their motives

I don't often agree with you but your point re the J's isn't too far off imo. Not much to show so far.

You don't get how media works. Everyone's working trade deadloine day, and when something big and a little unexpected happens, and you can interview a person with whom you're familiar from their days as a colleague, you do it. CBJ hardly had to sell the media on a JD interview last year on the deadline.

while it doesn't make our team better tomorrow, it does't put the franchise in any worse of a position going forward.

I hate this deal. It doesn't improve the jacketsby feeling any kind of need. Instead they get another bottom six grinder. I have to think that Gaborik's potential contribution to the playoff push is more valuable then the return. Grindr and little round pick in a week draftcertainly don't improve his team in the short term, and likely don't improve in long-term either.

Kekalainen didn't even tell Gaborik? Did I hear that right? Figured he'd have to at least asked him to waive his NTC.

If that's the case maybe Gabby will tell him to gfh and I think we'd be better off.

Yeah, you're right about that.

I just think since JD/Jarmo took over basically every move they've made has been underwhelming, and they've had tons of ammo to work with.

I get frustrated just watching them being publicly praised and treated like media darlings who can do no wrong. Howson built this roster painfully from the ground up during some rough years where he was constantly eviscerating and seen as a punchline in the media.

It's easy for Jarmo and JD to preach patience while the team is winning, it was much harder to Howson to actually the Nash saga dragged on, or while his team was losing and teams were probably calling offering immidieate help for prospects like Jenner or Johansen, or while his NHL ready 2nd overall pick was out for the seaon. It's his patience, IMO, not Jarmo and JD's, that deserve the credit (at least thus far).

To be fair to JD/Jarmo, what would you rather have had them do? Howson really had to build his own team, because what was left to him by Maclean was garbage. Jarmo and JD had the luxury of having a solid core already put into place, which means obviously that not as much movement is required.

You're right, can't argue with that. With all the assets they had, just feel like they could have done a lot more and got a much longer lasting impact from Brassard/Moore and one or two of the first round picks than just the year of Gabby and all the 4th liner depth moves.

Do two failures equal one success? If so, WTG Jarmo!!! Failed in trading for Gaborik and failed in giving Gaborik away (as expected). CBJ playoff chances and possible first ever playoff win >>>> with Gaborik than conditional picks and Frattin. :shakehead

Jarmo's got to step up his game.

This is essentially the same team that is currently in a playoff spot. 3-1-0 since the break, despite not playing their top game. Forgive me if I don't join you in jumping off the cliff.

Yep... But I said that a month ago to expect at best a 2nd round draft pick and a depth player. Stupid.

I think it's addition by subtraction. I would have liked to see them get more help on D. But, Gabby didn't create anything and we weren't as strong when he was in the lineup. People forced passes his way instead of shooting themselves.

Everyone seems to have the mindset of NHL '95 for Sega, load it up with goal scorers and they have to work together, well he didn't work or work hard.

Case of beer that Gaborik scores more goals than Frattin over remaining regular season;)

Kudos to your GM, he got a better return on Gabo then NYI got on Vanek.

Frattin is better than that scrub NYI got.
