Now I'm saying that this is NOT the right time to move him. It is much better to hang onto him for the 20 games and see what happens. Unless keeping him precluded them from making another move which DOES improve the team, you're selling low at a point when it would just make sense to hang on for whatever the player is worth during the season and worry about the offseason after you've been eliminated. We aren't talking about a player demanding to be traded or a UFA with tons of value here. At most you lose out on a fringe player and a mid pick.

This. We panicked.

A 2nd and maybe a 3rd is not nothing.

The second isn't conditional.

Ok the Dispatch was wrong (and they just updated it). That's better, but still not great.

You're rolling the dice at a critical point in perhaps the most pivotol season in franchise history for a 2nd round pick and Matt Frattin? Not worth, in my opinion. Just keep things status quo if you can't get a move that makes us better immediately. That's not to say he's a major part of the success, but if we saw Comeau leaving for a 5th or something I'd be saying the same thing. This trade doesn't help us right now and as such it's a bad move.

Can someone do the math?

It's sure looks like we just spent the retained portion of the salary to buy a second rounder.:sarcasm:

It is this year, which by the way we're still in the midst of. If we dont make the playoffs, this year is a complete failure

Maybe to you, but not to me. It is all about a process. Our organization continues to build toward being a very good team. We won't be there until players like Johansen are in their prime (or at least closer to it).

To each their own. I've followed this team for 13 years and have seen ZERO playoff wins. There is no moral victories for me anymore, its playoffs or bust.

This is what I don't get. How are we rolling the dice when we are basically just going back to the team we have been for almost the entire year?

And you've said this 15,000 times. And I'll give you the same response everyone has given you, you can't always build towards next year. I think this may actually be the first trade deadline we've ever been in playoff position for (I remember in 09 we caught fire in late march). So naturally, we give a good piece away for mostly picks.

Kekalainen apparently didn't get the memo we don't totally suck anymore.

Return seems fine. His injury situation and cap hit helped contribute to what appears to be a lesser return.

Let's see if we flip that cap space into something else.

I think there's some people overreacting. We're still 45 minutes away from the deadline. Wait until then before you go nuts.

We are not a better team than we were an hour ago. Then again we've got a good record without him in the lineup the last two seasons. Other teams around us have, potentially, improved. To this point, we're relying on what is in the room.

I was hoping for a first, but whatever.

At least this sends a message as an organization... If you don't bring it in a way that helps the team win, then it doesn't matter what your name is -- you could be moved. Regardless if you want to be here or not.

I doubt Frattin sees the ice over Tropp or Comeau. Boll will be back soon and they think Skille should be playing. This is clearly the most confusing piece of this deal.

We could have gotten a crappy conditional pick just for dealing his negotiating rights in the summer. I see no way to paint this as a positive unless we get Vanek in 20 minutes. Bring back Howson.

The Blues somehow managed to improve drastically (even though they were already elite) as soon as JD and Jarmo left. All the success the Jackets have had is due to Scott Howson's "bricks" not the current front offices. Here's the scorecard so far.

Howson
Todd Richards, Ryan Johansen, Ryan Murray, Jack Johnson, James "sleeper Norris candidate" Wisniewski, Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Ansimov, Sergei Bobrovsky, Cam Atkinson, Nick Foligno, Nikita Nikita, Fedor :shakehead Tyutin, Boone Jenner

JD/Jarmo
Blake Comeau, Jack Skille, Matt Frattin, Corey Tropp, an awful Jared Boll contract extension, Illari Melart, Curtis McElhinney, Jody Shelley between the glass, 1 year of Marian Gaborik, exiling the classiest vet the team had in Vinny Prospal, NICK SHULTZ, and a massive UFA deal for a thus far underwhelming Nathan Horton.

For all the talk of the brick by brick approach, aside from hopefully Wennberg, JD and Jarmo haven't brought a single useful brick to the foundation unless they are trying to build a children's treehouse out of NHL fourth line grinders.

And exactly how long has Jarmo had to equal what Howson did?

No offense but that depends on you definition of suck. Does anybody really think that in a 7 game series we have a chance against the pens, bruins, or any of the top teams in the westm The goal isn't to make the playoffs, it's to win cups and as much as we want to be the team isn't there yet.

This is ridiculous. Of course the goal for the CBJ for this season is to make the playoffs. After a season or two of making the playoffs and perhaps winning a playoff game or (dare I say it?) a playoff series the CBJ can start talking about winning the Stanley Cup as the goal.

A playoff series against the bruins or pens would be huge for the development and experience of guys like Jenner Murray, and Johansen
