We have Jared Boll as the fighter (who has been MUCH more effective this year BTW). How many fighters do we need on the roster?

I say you need one fighter but a few guys like Dubinsky who can drop the gloves if need be.

Personally, I would like to see a 4th line made entirely out of guys who can fight. Not necessarily a goon line, but at least give me a chance to see a line brawl

I don't know but my sense is that the Eastern teams (at least the northern ones) have more fighters than the West. I would think a couple of guys like Chris Stewart who is physical, can score and will go when necessary would be a plus.
And to really overkill it,can play good D too.

I believe we need 2, you see what's happening now with Boll hurt, you need 2 guys that can play but are willing to fight, imo.

After last night, I want Dorse back, Euros float in the tight checking, hard hitting games and are invisible most of the time in the playoffs. See Huselious and Vyborny amongst 100's of other examples...He is a 7.5 million floater who cherry picks for the break away and skates half speed back in his own zone. That's my impression of him so far. I would rather have Dorse hit everything in site, challenge the other team, chirp the other team and get under their skin and most importantly, standing up for his teammates and keeping the other team from running around like St. Louis and Minn just did to us. That's far more impactful than 25 goals, which is my guess for how many goals Gaborik will score next season!

I don't know, that's a pretty low number, I think (or at least really hope) we'll see more than 25 goals.

That said, and I'd still make the trade even though I'm starting to get indigestion over it, that what you have to say about Dorse is spot on. The thing about the guy is, to be obvious, he grew into the role. The Dorse of last season was an order of magnitude better than the Dorse of the season prior in terms of production. And this year's Dorse had really grown into a leadership position on the team. Guy didn't just want to fight, it's that he was so damn competitive, hated to lose, and seemed to understand the function of the fight in the rhythm of the game. His role may have seemed "minor" in terms of scoring, but he accomplished something by fully inhabiting it. A young guy coming up like Jenner who may be game will still need to develop in the way Dorsett did.

Yeah, gonna miss Dorsett :(

One of the things that bugs me about the Gaborik deal: I'm guessing that we could have gotten him in the summer without trading half as much. The Rangers would've had to move either him or Brad Richards, and there just aren't that many teams who are willing to add salary like the Jackets.

People are going to be trying to dump their high salary players, regardless of how good they are, in the summer because of the cap going down. That is when we will strike.

You're making a BIG assumption. My guess is we'll trade one of our #1 for a 20 goal scorer (with a relatively bad contract), draft the other #2 picks and turnover some of the bottom 1/3 of our roster. Not sure if you'll see us make too many changes. Again I could be totally wrong, and I agree there will be opportunities to buy bad contracts (cheaply) and I think we add one of them, but we don't have a ton of roster flexibility unless someone takes one of our bad contracts (RJ, Wiz) and I can't see that happening unless it's changing my crap for your crap.

Dude, we are going to have almost a complete roster sitting at under 50 million. JK already indicated they want to be active in the trade market cap space for that very reason, not that we will be the only team. What assumption is being made?

I don't think there will be as many salary dumps of players we want as we'd hope, but there is little question that is exactly what the team is going to try. It will start around the draft.

Here is what I mean on roster moves:

Forwards we have 8 guys under contract for next season: Gabby, RJ, Dubi, Foligno, Johanson, Boll, Mackenzie, Letestu.
I expect 3 RFA will be back: Anisimov, Calvert, Atkinson.
I expect Vinny (RFA) to be back. Maybe he retires but I think with bringing in Gabby he'll be back.
Finally have Jenner on roster next year.
That's 13 forwards.

D-men:
4 guys under contract: Wiz, Tyutin, JJ, Nikitin.
2 other guys under contract I would expect could be full-time or split time w Springfield: Erixion and Prout. Maybe Savard?
THen throw in Murray.

Bottom line I doubt if we'll see many moves. Lot of guys locked up - we do need a backup tender. Likely (IMO) package one or two regulars for a big contract forward (like Gabby - but I expect less goals, more rounded forward).

i know what you're getting at, but we already have $44.6m committed for 14 players still needing to resign, Artie, Bob, Calvert, Cam, and a backup goalie...we'll be lucky to be under $55m right there IMO

I forgot about Bob, my mistake. Having said that, JK knew that before he made the statement. Contracts will drive additional moves even if cap doesn't. They are preparing for exactly what Brass was talking about. Granted that was before the Gaborik move, but they indicated after that move that our 1st(s), lottery protected, are still in play for a move that "helps us know and helps us in the future".

if we can move Umby's salary for picks/whatever, i think we then trade a young guy and a 1st for more scoring...i could see it...Gaby needs paired with more skill...and this team needs more skill...

Success and intent are two different things. We know what they are intending. We already know the needs. We already know the difficulty.

What I like better this time around is that JK/JD know what they want and they are decisive. They aren't going to hound someone for the perfect deal for 3 years.

Wait, we're having this conversation again? That our roster is set and we have no flexibility? As of 2:00 pm last Wednesday, there were tons of posters on this board wringing their hands about having the same group of forwards next year because "I don't know how we'll fit any new guys in" - we saw how quickly that can change.

Bottom line is that you have no idea what Jarmo and Co are thinking and I think it's likely that you'll be surprised and shocked at who is and who isn't on the roster next year.

They told us what they are thinking.

What they didn't tell us is the precise details of what they are thinking (players they are willing to move, who they are targeting, what they envision the cap to be, etc). However, we know they are looking for offense. They are looking for moves that help us in the future as well as the present. We know they intend to be a landing pad for the right player with a contract the other team can't afford. They are willing to part with a lottery protected 1st rounder for a player that fits in with the above. We know that they consider our organization strength to be depth on defense, which is a valuable commodity.

They have told us a lot.

I won't be shocked by "who is or isn't on our roster.".

From what has publicly been stated, this seems to be a pretty good capsule description of where the front office perceives the team to be and the direction they hope to follow to improve it.

I'm sure that GMJK laid some groundwork for deals in the offseason. This club is in a position that it's never really been in before. It is likely willing to take on some money and they have the ammo to make a deal. They've got 3 first round picks, some decent prospects and a willingness to "reshape" the team. I think this summer is going to be fun. Our hope as fans should be for the team to finish out the season as best as possible (playoffs would be ideal), and then sit back and see what happens in the draft, free agency and trades. I think this summer will be more interesting than most. This summer will be JK and JD's chance to continue to put their stamp on this team. My optimism is higher than in any point as a Jackets fan.

Quick question here for hockey etiquette. Regarding the Blue Jackets going to the same division as the Rangers next year and now with all the player movement between both teams recently now with Gaborik.

Last summer, when Nash was traded to NY, people were ok with having the Rangers as a "secondary" team to root or pull for. Now that NYR will be rivals essentially, is it still ok to root for the Rangers, or would that now be a no-no?

Our summer cap flexibility would have been a big asset, but we've already used most of it in acquiring Gaborik.

The way I see it, after Cam, Calvert, Anisimov, and Bob are signed, we're at $57 million, throw in Ryan Murray's $3.5 million cap hit, and we're only a few million from the cap.

The Gaborik trade also lost most of our redundancy, which by definition we didn't need on our roster, but it also means we are going to be giving up useful players in trades from hereon.

I have no idea who you were talking to, but unless you are from NY there is no time or place to be a Rangers fan. Now others might try and convince you otherwise, but they would be misguided or just like to attempt to buy championships.

Having said that, cheer for who you want to. If you like Brassard, Nash, and Dorse, go for it. You like who you like, don't worry about what the rest of us think. Sure I'll talk trash, but it's all in good fun. I don't really mean anything by it when I talk trash about it. For example Viqsi like Nashville. Why? I have no idea. Even so, I look past that. It's personal preference. It's like those crazy people that like coffee flavored ice cream What is wrong with them? Or banning large soda's? Like that is going to have any meaningful impact on the obesity problem.

So support NY if you like. Sure, I'll joke around say you are crazy. But I won't mean it. I've had plenty of friends that are/where Michigan fans. No harm came to them or me.

Like who you want. It's usually okay to have 2nd teams. Most of us have one. But if you like the Rangers, it'll certainly be tougher to cheer for them now though.

Just don't show up to a game wearing a Rangers jersey and a Blue Jackets hat (or any other similar combination). That's just obnoxious.
