This is a laughable argument. Draft position can make a young player a pleasant surprise or a disappointment, but when you consider where they play in the lineup, it is not a relevant question. Any coach who is making decisions based on where some GM picked a player seven years ago ought to be fired.

Brassard is not a bad player. The CBJ are just a team with too many centers. Brassard needs to be on the first or second line for his game to work. We already have Anisimov, Dubinsky and Johansen for two center positions. Brassard was deemed to be the least valuable of four. Easy decision.

Remember the day we begged for centers? Brass is a decent center and player, what he's not is a third or fourth liner... I agree with you.

If you happened to hear the interview with George Matthews and Bobby Carpenter (Former OSU Linebacker) and Anthony Rothman you would know that it's "Gab-er-NIK"

I've seen it posted a few times that the Rangers moved Gaborik and it helped immensely with their "cap" situation (I'm paraphrasing). I'm having a tough time following that logic. In the deal, they saved $1.7MM in cap money which is the equivalent to one(1) 3rd line player or possibly an entry level contract cap hit. I must be missing something. They have 17 players signed next year and approximately $14MM in cap space ($2.8MM/player if they sign 5 guys)

I guess adding the 3 NHL players to one eliminates the need to sign more players in the off season but if they truly want to re-sign Clowe (UFA), Stepan, Hagelin, Zuccarello and McDonagh(all RFA), they're going to need every penny of that just to fit them all in next year.

The following year they have to deal with Brassard, Moore, Callahan, Lundquist, Del Zotto, Girardi and Stralman(probably let go). There are other UFA's to come off the books but if they were to re-sign the 5 players from this year that leaves them at likely $35MM for 10 players and some big talent to sign. Rangers have some work to do in the next two years. Granted they appear to have a lot of solid assets that could return some picks and players that are likely cheaper....

Just find it interesting that Gaborik appears to be the cap linchpin for some fans and I just don't see it given their roster set up.... Oh well, not for me to worry about. Trade works both ways and I'm only worried about Gabo"Brick" going forward. :D

Doesn't seem bad to me. Tight but manageable. Won't be signing lots of UFA's though.

Richards could get bought out, too. Depending how next year goes.

And, despite their opening night success, there's no guarantee the Rangers will WANT to re-sign Clowe or Brassard.

I'm still flashing back to last summer when many Rangers fans were adamant that they didn't want Nash because of cap issues.

I know I and others frequently countered that they could always turn around and make other moves down the road like, say, trading Gaborik. It was scoffed at. What a difference 9 or so months make.

I think the possibility of Richards being bought out went up with this trade and that may be the huge benefit for the Rangers. However, Brass and Stepan as the top 2 centers may not be a good thing either. seem more like 2(Stepan) and 3(Brass)...

The thing is that trading Gabby still makes no sense to me from the Rangers perspective after acquiring Nash. They are horrible at scoring goals as it is. And it isn't as if highly lauded youngster Kreider has generated so much offense that they could afford to swap a guy who can score 30-40 goals for one (Brassard) who'd be lucky to score 20. I'm sure Sather is already plotting his next foolproof solution, but it starts to feel like he's just switching out deck chairs on the Titanic.

I don't know if Torts had any influence but I'm guessing he did. Of course I don't see Brass & Moore being Tortorellaean either. Dorse should fit nicely as a 4th liner there.

You could say the same thing about trading Nash? The CBJ couldn't score with him, then they trade their only legit goal scorer. And the CBJ are the master of switching out deck chairs. Hopefully with new leadership that is changing.

Bottom line is sometimes guys don't fit. Torts wants guys to play a certain way, and apparently Gabby didn't fit.

Yeah, except the Jackets were clearly rebuilding and used their biggest asset to obtain multiple assets to do that. The Rangers? On the bubble of the playoffs and probably still think they can win the Cup.

Gabby fit just fine last year with Blueshirts.

Bottom line? Torts is a moron. A modern day Mike Keenan who caught Lightning in a bottle once and will continue to get jobs based on that one shining moment.

I don't know the whole story with Torts and Gaby, but I don't blame Gaby one bit for his play under Tortorella and wanting to escape him. Torts is a sociopath. I have no idea why he has employment in the NHL, or anywhere come to think of it.

I hear Rutgers has a coaching opening. Torts would be ideal for them. :)

Puck Prospectus, who's work I generally respect, has high praise for Jarmo's deadline dealing.

I enjoy this article. Start off by basically parroting the same "Howson is a bumbling fool" line so popular around here (although slightly more subdued), then has to concede that "(Brassard) can be replaced internally as the club has a number of similar pivots" and "defense is the team's greatest organizational strength both on the current roster and in the prospect pool".

So the fact we have a bunch of guys like Brassard is a testament to XGMSH's team building prowess or is it that none of them are very good?
and as to the D, well I guess something has to be the greatest and since our offense is non-existent, I'm guessing D is a good candidate.

:sarcasm::naughty:
See, two ways of looking at it.
