G Zach Fucale (2013, 36th, MTL)

Fucale has been playing very well as of late and has proven to be a great performer in the games that matter most.

Nope he sucks. I can't believe Canada took this guy. May as well just hand over the gold medal to another team.

Here's is a good articile about Fucale recently from Tsn.

MALMO, SWEDEN – While sitting in the stands at the Malmo Isstadion on Boxing Day serving the second game of a four-game suspension, Griffin Reinhart was surprised to hear the voice of Zach Fucale. Team Canada's backup goalie at the time was on the bench and, per usual, running his mouth.

What was he saying?

"I don't even know," said Reinhart, the big Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman, "just kind of gibberish."

"Maybe he just didn't understand me," said Fucale with a grin.

The Halifax Mooseheads goalie talks a good game. Literally.

"I like to just keep a little play-by-play of the game by myself," said the 18-year-old Montreal Canadiens prospect. "I talk a lot and encourage everyone as well."

It was a joke at the draft that the kid went past the 1st round and it's even more of a joke at this date.

I remember having him as high as 9th overall before New Jersey traded the pick for Schneider.

Yeah, that was pretty ridiculous. I couldn't believe Calgary passed on him twice in the latter part of the 1st round.

It's nice to see that more people are starting to change their opinions on Fucale, now that they actually get the chance to watch him. It used to be that you couldn't even mention Fucale without someone screaming about how great Tristan Jarry and Eric Comrie's stats are.

You're right. Calgary ****ed up twice last draft.

Calgary doesn't need another goalie prospect. Poirier is one of our best prospects and Klimchuk looks very good too. No way would I trade Poirier for Fucale.

As a Habs fan neither would I. Nothing against Poirier but Fucale looks like he can be an elite NHL goalie. Plenty of work to do to get to that point but he has all the tools necessary and has proven his worth in every major event.(Memorial Cup, WJC, U-18)

I would laugh at a Klimchuk for Fucale offer.

Drafting goalies in the 1st round is really risky so many teams stay away from that. And Fucale hasn't exactly set the world on fire at all this season.

But Calgary specifically, has Jon Gillies, Ortio is playing exceptional in AHL, and both Berra and Ramo look like legit young NHL goalies. Calgary just doesn't need more goalie prospects.

Also I never said anything about Klimchuk for Fucale, but I wouldn't laugh too hard. He's a very good prospect; a 6' scorer who's been developing excellent 2-way play. Looks like a safe bet; probably safer than Fucale since goalies have the highest potential.

You can never fault a team for not picking a goalie in the first round, so it's not a joke that he made it past the 1st.

With an early 1st? Sure. But with a late 1st? Price, Bernier, Schneider, Rask, Varlamov, etc. Some of the best young(ish) goalies in the league are former 1st rounders.

And keep in mind that every year there are only about 2 goalie selections in the 1st round (less recently), and then a few dozen more in the later rounds. Using a 1st or 2nd round pick on a goalie is way better odds than throwing a 5th rounder at it and hoping something sticks.

Teams like Columbus/Calgary who had three 1sts last draft... Definitely should have considered taking Fucale with their last pick. Neither have proven elite NHL goaltending, they each have a couple prospects... But so what? If both turn out into great goalies, you keep the better one, trade the other. You'd get better value back than a late 1st.

It also seems the days of goalies going in the top 10 are more or less behind us, so instead of having to use a top 5-10 pick to get THE top goalie prospect from a draft, you can use a pick in the 15-30 range.

At that point, what are the odds a forward/D pick become an impact player? Pretty low, you might see 1 pick in the 15-30 range become an impact player per draft, but 1-2 of the top 3 goalie prospects per draft generally make the NHL, with one of them becoming a legit starter. Decent odds.

i agree he should have been a 1st rounder, teams really messed up....as for the BS of goalies are too hard to predict I do not buy that either, in the NHL a lot of great goalies came from the 1st round, some good ones came from other rounds too but same goes for players, people can go through and say well MA Fleury is good but not the 1st overall talent or same as Dipietro but thing is I do not even question any dumb move Mike Milbury made and Dipietro was good till his injuries.....

There are a lot of undiscovered goalies because there are a lot of goalies who are great and teams just do not get to see them much because they are playing behind an older experienced goalie especially over in europe because there are like 10 different leagues that quality players can all play in of all different age groups. That is why teams get steals of goalies later rounds. If a goalie though like Luongo, Rask, Bernier...who were taken 1st round, well they are quality goalies why not take them 1st round...not sure why teams are in this goalies are hard to read, I think problem with a lot of goalies not turning out is because of how they are handled such as teams not having room for them so they keep cutting them to the minors over and over, some teams throwing a young goalie right into the fire to fast because they do not have a good goalie so the young guy becomes the number 1.

This way of thinking has now came into QMJHL as now they say we do not do goalies in the 1st unless they are exceptional....two years ago Mason Mcdonald fell to the round when a team like gatineau had 2 1st round picks, one pick late, why wouldn't you take the kid, instead they took Kameron Kielly who was good but Mcdonald would have been the better choice, instead Mason went to Bathurst the worst team in the CHL for developing talent but at least now he is on PEI and now he is doing great. Again if the goalie is good draft him where he shold go instead of being scared, any forward or defender could just as easily flop.
