G Thatcher Demko (2014, 36th, VAN)

Another shutout. That puts him at 9, which is the record for Boston College goalies I believe (breaking Schneider's record).

He was lights out tonight. Totally dialed in. Honestly as bad as I felt that Maguire had to lose that one, neither goalie deserved a loss there. Was an exciting, competitive game.

the Vancouver Canucks have another 2 years to sign him.

No they don't.

The CBA rule says players can become a UFA after their senior year.

He is a Junior, so if they don't sign him this off-season, he becomes a UFA next off-season, august I think it is.

and they get no compensation for him if he signs somewhere else.

Can they not sign him DURING his senior year or before July 1st after he graduates?

They MUST sign him before he reports to school for his senior year?

Unless there's a specific city he has in mind that he absolutely must play for I don't see why he wouldn't sign with Vancouver. There's nobody ahead of him on the depth charts here and the path into the NHL is as clear as it possibly could be.

I imagine if him and his agent have his best interests in mind it would be foolish for them not to sign.

Kid just broke schneiders shut out record, ridiculous.

Can someone clarify the signing rules for college draftees?

Can the Canucks sign him up until June 30th of his senior year or before that or what?

August 15th 2017 is when he becomes a UFA

Can someone explain to me why this kid will sign for Vancouver? Why sign an ELC and make less money than just wait a year and sign for more somewhere else (Edmonton)

The Canucks own his rights until July 1st or August 17th, whatever the date, after his senior season. So yes, the Canucks technically could sign him after his senior season.

HOWEVER, if the Canucks don't sign him this offseason, it is almost 95% sure he is going to exercise his right to become a UFA. If a player waits to sign, it is almost always because they want to sign where ever they feel they fit best.

Not likely, IMO. All signs are that he'll sign in Vancouver. There are very few cases where they become free agents.

nice try,

the likely hood of what you think might happen probably won't happen since players that bail represent a very small percentage. Most college players end up being signed by the team that drafted them, Blake Wheeler and Justin Shultz were the 2 that bailed on their team.

I fully expect him to sign this summer. He is ready for the AHL. Vancouver will make room for him to start and has fantastic goaltending coaches. Unless he has some specific problem with the team, he will sign. If he does not sign this summer and goes back for an unnecessary senior year, I would be worried.

Can go pro earlier therefore making more money faster because you can hit UFA status sooner. By signing just after College season ends and before the playoffs allows him to be eligible to play and therefore knocks off a year of RFA while on being on the team for like 1 month.

Because he would still have to sign an ELC. In cases where a player goes to college after their draft year, they can sign a two year ELC, but that would be counter balanced by having to forgo a year in pay, he would not be an RFA sooner. But because Thatcher went to college early, his draft related ufa ELC would still be a three year deal.

This . However, his future is much brighter signing as a UFA elsewhere.

Vancouver is a goaltending factory and they don't have a young bonafide starter clogging the way (as of now). Honestly, Vancouver is probably one of the better places for him to be.
