G Thatcher Demko (2014, 36th, VAN)

Signed has a point, why not take your pick of teams instead of playing with a team that refuses to do what it takes to put together a contending team. If I were him I would absolutely ask Benning for what direction he is going with the organization. If the answer is not a satisfactory one then it is probably better to look for an organization that is more willing to get away from mediocrity than one that embraces it.

This would be a real outlier. As noted it hasn't happened very much at all, and Vancouver is literally a goaltending factory. Melanson and company are in the process of saving Markstrom's career right now. Demko will sign and he'll be developed correctly.

I really really hope your right but its not looking that way. So when do u guys think he will sign if he wants to with the Nucks?

I won't say there is anything to worry about. All of this is pure speculation, most hockey players can be loyal to a fault to the teams that drafted them.

As far as when he signs it could be as soon as this summer or he could choose to go back and finish college and sign the year after. It will be slightly worrying if he doesn't sign this summer but that is hardly any indication that he plans on leaving.

My comments were based on what I would do in his situation. Demko has far better advisors (than I) who should help him come to the best decision for himself.

Where would Demko go? Toronto? Lol. They are further away from winning than Columbus or the oilers.
Buffalo is a good destination.

This is ridiculous. There are 30 starter jobs in this league, 30. Most teams are set in the goalie position. Miller will turn 36 this summer, and next year his contract will be up. I doubt he will re-sign, and Markstrom isn't a proven starter, and might never be. Behind Markstrom, outside of Demko, there's nobody, the path IS wide-open. Most starting goaltenders are just pleased that they're starting goaltenders in the best league in the world, but you're saying that the guy should have demands on a team like he's a ****ing all-star and a guy that will win the vezina, and maybe even the Hart trophy the upcoming season. If you're a young goaltender, your best interest is in your own development, not how ****ing good your team is. That doesn't make any ****ing sense at all for a young goaltender that has zero NHL-experience. The Canucks has been great when it comes to goaltenders the last decade, and this is what should matter the most for him, and that they believe in him.

Eddie Lack was a nobody before he played his 1st game with Vancouver, he even went undrafted. He was great last year even though he played behind a horrible defence, how is he doing now in Carolina? Markstrom was nearly considered a generational talent when he flew over to Florida after great success in Sweden. They completely drove him into the ground, and now he's finally starting to show some of that talent that made him great.

There's literally no reason for him not to sign with the Canucks, LITERALLY, and i dare you to name one besides "there could be better teams" because there's not. Buffalo is also a pretty **** example of a "better fit" since they have Lehner, Ullmark, Forsberg and even Makarov. Not to mention that they're far away from being a legit great team the next years.

If you're thinking of Anton Forsberg, he is a Blue Jackets prospect. Sabres have Lehner, Ullmark, and Petersen as strong prospects with Nathan Lieuwen who might be getting back on track after having his career ruined by concussions. It's a solid group like you say.

Yeah my mistake. Got kinda mixed up for some reason.

The Canucks don't have any other legitimate goalie prospects and the AHL job will be his when he wants it. Miller is gone in a season or two and Markstrom is still a question mark. In terms of opportunity, Vancouver has to be very attractive to Demko. I don't think he's going to get a better opportunity elsewhere.

I think it's just baseless fear mongering to suggest he doesn't sign in Vancouver.

He seemed to love being a part of the organization when he was here after getting drafted.

He's actually in a perfect position with our organization.

Markstrom was universally regarded as an elite goaltending prospect, and really had his struggles, before figuring it out (knock on wood). Being able to lean on Markstrom and learn from what he went through would be great for Demko.

Markstrom also appears to have greatly benefitted from Rollie's teachings.

I'm not sure how secure Rollie's future in Vancouver is (I would hope it is very secure) but, as long as he's here, I'd think it's probably an attractive destination for a young, highly thought of goalie like Demko.

All bets are off if Ryan Miller gets offered a Luongo deal by Benning this off-season;)

I'm sure many of these posters have made it up in their minds that the Canucks are doomed. But, good teams are built from the net out :naughty:

Perhaps some of us have been around so long we see the patterns that almost always come to fruition.

Its as though when we are young we think that we have awesome prospects and ;

1) They will turn out way higher than their draft position
2) No other team has prospects
3) Everything will come together magically for our team but no other team will enjoy that same success or better. The truth is they have better prospects so we will make no net gain and we will probably get further behind.

One day I figured out the basic NHL rule for teams not choke full of prospects like the Oiler and Sabres.

-either you reach the Conference Finals or better
-or you draft in the top 5

These are the real winners to any NHL season from a franchise standpoint.

The anti -rule teams are the St Louis Blues, the New Jersey Devils the Vancouver Canucks , and the San Jose Sharks

The Canucks can claim 2 presidents trophies but only one trip out of the 2nd round which of course was a great one. However, because of this, we have virtually no blue chip prospects.

In 2012 we won the presidents trophy, won 1 playoff game, and drafted 26th, Brendan Gaunce. The Leafs were a joke ......won 1 less playoff game, and drafted Morgan Reilly

In 2013 the Canucks won their division , got blown away in 4 straight games , and drafted Hunter Shinkaruk. The Avs were a joke, won the same amount of playoff games, and got Nathan MacKinnon. Panthers got Barkov.

First and second round losses are for up and and coming young teams. Thrilling for fans knowing the team is on the rise to contend the next year or year after.

Its true we have Bo Horvat , but it aint because of high drafting. We had to sell off one of the best goalies in the NHL for him. Same with Mc Cann .

Virtanen will be a player but again, my god. Im not even going to bother.

What does this mean for Demko ? It means that the Sedins are here for 2 more years so the Canucks will still try to get a playoff berth. They will not gain any blue chip prospects . We have to rely on the fluke method of hoping our low picks over perform.

So the Canucks will not be contending in 5 years. Its most likely 8 to 10. Canucks are better off trading Demko -who was drafted 36th- for a top 10 blue chip draft pick.

"Canucks are better off trading Demko -who was drafted 36th- for a top 10 blue chip draft pick."

The problem is, realistically, he has to develop to the point Schneider was at in order to get someone to trade us that top 10 blue chip draft pick.

Yep. Except the Blues offered Gillis the 11th overall pick for Schneider when he was still a back up. Same would probably happen for Demko.

At which point during his career as a back-up? He had really strong NHL number as a back-up before taking the job from Luongo so if we're talking that stage it's not really comparable to where Demko is in his career.

Yep, a backup who posted a .930 sv% and won 16 of 24 starts in the NHL, former AHL goalie of the year....its totally reasonable to think Demko would have equal value to Schneider :sarcasm:

We also currently have a Vezina quality goalie signed to a lifetime contract. Yep, nothin' ever changes in Canuckland.

Matt Murray is playing in the AHL right now and teams are throwing all kinds of offers at him on HF boards.

I just offered the Oiler 2nd in 2016 and 1st in 2017 for him.

I have no doubt some team could offer their 14th overall pick for him right now. Or Higher.

So once Demko leaves BC and goes to Utica, offers like this will starting coming in if he puts up numbers like Murray.

In your snark, you forgot all the other factors. Like the canucks were bonifide contenders. There was an actual goalie war where both wanted to be starter or traded.

I guess these things 'slipped' your mind because your focus is elsewhere.

Demkos situation is different. I would prefer we trade him for a top 10 pick or blue chip prospect that is 18 or 19 when Demko is 22 or 23.

You can always create different scenarios or argue with different angles, but it wont matter to the scenario I created. If the Canucks were rebuilding RIGHT NOW , then yeah we keep him.

Aquilini is in denial and refuses to rebuild until the standings put a gun to his head. This delay makes me choose to trade him.

For what it's worth, Craig Button has Demko ranked 15th in TSN's top 50 prospects.
Obviously that .940 save percentage is starting to get noticed.

Demko is a rediculous talent. Size and quickness. He is going to be a top 5 goalie in the league one day

And he is a great talent. He doesnt have a great team to goto anytime soon. Canucks are my hometown team. They mean a LOT to me.

I wouldnt be saying 'trade him' if I didnt think it would benefit the Canucks MORE than keeping him.

lol yeah let's trade Demko. What are you even talking about. So ridiculous. The Canucks are literally set with Markstrom and Demko for the next 15 years. It's a perfect succession plan. Markstrom will be the number 1 for at least 3-5 years and by then there will be another goalie controversy and one of them will be traded.
