G Thatcher Demko (2014, 36th, VAN)

Dang Signed tried real hard with one last-ditch effort to no avail.

Glad this is done, signed/delivered, onto the next task!

He's trolling buddies are gone too, glad we got him signed. All the haters can really go away now, including the *fake* Canuck fans.

Really? Source?

"And Canucks rookie Jared McCann was texting Demko all season and giving him the gears about his (signing) decision.

“It (drive) comes from my dad,” said Demko. “He never let me win anything when I was little, even mini-hockey or whiffle-ball, he always stuck it to me and would rub it in my face. “But now I can give it back to him.”

And McCann, too"

They became best friends immediately after the 2014 draft. In the first training camp they were always with each other and they remain in touch this whole time.

By all accounts, Demko will have a lot of work to do in the AHL. I'm reminded of Cory Schneider (who is one of the best in the league in my opinion) who really struggled in his first half season with the Moose.

Schneider struggling

Cory later reflected on his early Moose days:

"I really learned to appreciate the game and the skill level of these players in the American League," Schneider said. "Turning pro after college, I think I assumed it wasn't going to be that big of an adjustment. Coming in and being humbled a little bit, realizing how hard you have to work in practice and every single game, that took a little while to understand."

With Schneider consistently losing and Moose teammate Drew MacIntyre consistently winning, Schneider's struggles finally reached a breaking point with head coach Scott Arniel just prior to Christmas.

Schneider had been yanked from a Dec. 14 game vs. Lake Erie after getting torched for three goals on eight shots. With MacIntyre on recall to Vancouver at the time, Arniel's options in net for the next night's rematch were to go with an ECHL call-up or to put Schneider back out there.

"I called Cory into the office the next morning and kind of laid into him about what it takes to be a professional," Arniel recalled. "We had a real sit-down, he didn't do a whole lot of talking, I did most of it, and I proceeded to tell him that he didn't deserve it, but he was going back in the net that night."

Could see a very similar path for Demko, the similarities are pretty striking.

Funny to read half a year later.

As for AHL, he doesn't have great numbers, but Utica is a mess. Not a prime spot to develop a young goalie.

How's he doing in the AHL?

He's taking his time adjusting which is natural. It's the start of the season and it's his first pro season. Not even fellow 20yo Alex Nedeljkovic is lighting the AHL on fire. Regarding Demko though he is sporting a -4.073 GSAA, 0.20 Quality Start % (1 Quality Start out of 5 starts) and a 0.887 Bounce Back SV%. All this says is he needs development time which is normal. If you thought Demko was going to come in and dominate enough for NHL time then maybe you need to check your expectations.

You just made me realize I don't know s*** about goaltending.. what are these stats, if I may? And where can I read on the subject?

Cory Schneider was awful in his first couple months in the AHL then he adjusted and took off from there. I don't doubt Demko will be much different.

GSAA: Goals Saved Above Average. It's like WAR from baseball but for goalies. More useful than raw save percentage. Even strength save percentage isn't tracked anywhere publicly but in the NHL so this is pretty much the next best thing.

Quality Starts: If a goalie posts a SV% above league average or allows 2 goals or less and posts a save percentage above replacement level then he is awarded a Quality Start which means he gave his team a 77.5% chance at winning. Having a +0.60 Quality Start % is elite level.

Bounce Back SV%: The SV% of a goalie in games that occur after posting a non-quality start.

You can find these stats for AHL goalies here: AHL Adv. Goalie Stats

Vancouver's farm team is garbage. Dead last in league. Outshot most nights, and they struggle to score.

Sounds like a great environment for developing.

and Demko is probably the main attraction in terms of high end potential on that team.

Vancouver needs some prospects on that team.

we could have shinkaruk mccann and virtanen down there right now but unfortunately...well you know

Not a great start to AHL career but people shouldnt give up on him yet we should give him a few more starts before making conclusions hes still pretty young

C'mon dude you said it yourself. Boeser is struggling so he's clearly a bust. Therefore by mathematics since Demko is struggling he is also a bust.

The numbers don't lie.

Boesesr aint no bust and i never said that lol

Hes my fave Canucks prospect lol
