G Thatcher Demko (2014, 36th, VAN)

Why would he want to sign with a team that has one of if not the best goalie in the league in Quick, or with a team that has 2 incredible goalies already...both being young

Vancouver is a no-brainer to me, they have a goalie in Miller that is at or near the end of the line, and another goalie in Markstrom, whom has had a bit of a revival in VanCity but is a better fit as a 1B, that eventually gets moved out once the 1A youngster establishes himself....that being Demko.

Vancouver is his fastest path to a starting NHL gig without throwing him to the wolves on a bottom feeder team trying to find their way at all ends of the ice like an Edmonton or Toronto or Arizona

I agree with your general point, that the goalie situation in Van looks like a good situation to have both proper development time and potentially a quick transition to starter, but the team in general is looking pretty poor right now.

Vancouver does have a reputation for being great at goalie development recently.
Schneider, Lack, Markstrom...

Are we sure? His best choice is still to play out the rest of his NCAA days before he has free reign on choosing wherever he wants to go.

How lol he has a perfect nhl path here in van.

your right. Any college player can make this choice. like why not? for example, like Toronto, what a great place to sign. Great city, great weather, great fans, great traffic, whys not.

Hard to believe... but most people have some basic sense of loyalty and morals. Not everyone is Justin Schultz/Jimmy Vesey

Rather than an ill-informed social commentary isn't it better to acknowledge that exercising that loophole is the exception rather than the rule?

Loyalty to their college team that invested a full scholarship in them...? Orrrr....

Yeah but the college team knew that he's most likely not going to finish 4 years with them. It was known and accepted on both sides when they committed to each other.

However, an NHL team drafts a player with the premise that the player will eventually play for the team that drafted them.

based on that logic, canadian players should all be required to return to their home province teams as they've used the facilities and programs that are funded by taxpayers, volunteers and donations to help them to get where they are now.

This is the truth. Just doesn't happen that often. Look forward to Boeser's contract next year.

It's like the username Sarcastic just whooshed over everyone's heads or something.

Demko is signed, the hand wringing pauses for now.

Excellent.
Now we can move on from this UFA silliness to the Worlds, where Demko can start making adjustments to pro shooters depending on what type of goalie rotation USAH goes with there.

What happened to everyone who was freaking out saying the NCAA is no good, and all players wanted to go UFA and no one should draft players who go this route.

:laugh::laugh:

Kevin Hayes and Jimmy Vesey are the 1%

And in Hayes case he had legitimate reasons for not signing with the Hawks if I remember correctly (they didn't want to offer him an ELC after his JR year, wanting him to play another season). I can't think of a case where a guy was offered a contract as an underclassman and he didn't end up signing. Any time you wait til there a Jr, to even come forward with an offer you are chancing it.

Good for the Canucks to lock him up, he really had no reason to go back in regards to development, a NT would of been nice, but he had grown past that level. People will say degree, but considering he is probably there for all 3 semesters each year he's probably not very far off from graduating during the summer session.

Good for Vancouver they deserve it

Dead at all the other teams fans being all negative :laugh::laugh:

Here are his choices. (Dont blame the messenger)

1) Sign with the Canucks, drop out of college, and since we already got Miller and Markstrom, have Demko play in the AHL to develop him much like we did Schneider.

AHL salary = $67,000.

2) Go back to school, finish his undergraduate degree hes already worked 3 years to complete. Become a UFA and sign with any team he desires.

Which one would you choose? Honestly.

Look. If Demko wanted to leave school, he would have signed today. What does he have to think about that he hasnt had 3 years to already think about. He doesnt want to cause a scene with the Canucks sitting in front of him so he puts it off so that his agent can send an email a few weeks from now.
His signing bonus money is more than the AHL salary - so if he signed it would be $70,000 AHL salary + $92,500 signing bonus, = $162,500

Dang Signed tried real hard with one last-ditch effort to no avail.

Glad this is done, signed/delivered, onto the next task!
