Why do you think that?
Been a really rough year for Cossa. He got shelled in the AHL, sent to the ECHL so he could play regularly, and he's been up and down in the ECHL (mostly down). Goalies take awhile to develop, but a 1st round pick struggling in the ECHL isn't great. This has been debated a lot on the Detroit board recently.

He had 1 good game and 1 bad game in the AHL. He's had some really good games in the ECHL too.

I think all in all, including preseason, he's had a pretty decent year even if the stats don't look too hot.

Just being sarcastic...I liked the Cossa pick but am a bit disappointed in how he's played this year so far. Obviously still plenty of time for his development. But his last 5+ games have been absolutely brutal in the ECHL.
In his defense, that AHL team is absolutely garbage at pretty much everything. Unfortunately some of that lies of Cossa as well.

As you said goalies are complete voodoo and are great to bad from season to season it seems.

His development over the last couple years hasn’t been ideal though

Wasn’t there a hotshot goalie from Sweden the Wings chose not to select and went for Cossa instead?

If you start judging goalies who are barely 20 years old, you're gonna have a bad time. Oettinger also didn't have a great time in the AHL in his D+2 so let's give Cossa and Wallstedt a little more time, shall we? It's totally ok to discuss their performance but being disappointed or saying one team should have selected one over the other is totally futile at the moment. It's very rare, if ever, that a tall goalie (who kept growing in the case of Cossa) is ready at 20 years old. They usually take a while to reach their full potential (like maybe even 24-25 years old).

There is a difference between "ready" and playing awful in the ECHL... He has been disappointing and that is just facts.

Neither Wallstedt, nor Cossa, are killing it stats wise. Wallstedt had to fix a couple of things, but seems to be getting there...probably needs another year in the AHL. You can see the calm, and talent, in his game.
Cossa was always going to be a longer term project, but was taken because of ceiling, and size. He's probably 2-3 years away. i've always said that playing goalie in the minors can be tougher than the NHL, due to some of the inconsistent defense and personnel changes in front of them, as well as the poorer coaching and facilities(in most cases...not all). These differences are even more extreme in the ECHL, making it hard to play in for a goalie.

Bottom line...don't panic if you are a DRW(or MN) fan. It will take time.

I don’t disagree that patience is important for young goalies, but … are there any other examples of 1st round pick goalies, who got sent down to the ECHL (for an extended stay), and still ended up maturing into an NHL starter? Maybe there are, I just can’t think of any off the top of my head.

I can definitely think of some later round picks who made their way up from the ECHL to starting NHL goalie (like Jonathan Quick), but can’t think of a 1st rounder.

As someone deeply invested in the player from a sim league perspective, I still feel he should have been in the WHL this season and the fact he can't crack .900 in the ECHL is concerning. This isn't your typical 1st round goalie who has a huge track record. You can make the case he basically had the equivalent of a year and a half of WHL experience due to the effects of the pandemic.

He went pro earlier than most goalies do as well. His development has been concerning, but it's still way to early to worry.
