So do we only count our losses and not our wins? We got Sammy who cost us nothing. Compared to the previous goalies we gave up high draft picks for. With Murray we got a 3rd + a 7th. So we got free assets to attach to a trade to unload Murray or keep those free assets and buy him out. The buyout is not even a big deal. Cap all fits this year, and only $2m hit next year. We have a lot of cap coming off the books next year even after re-signing Matthews and Nylander. They both just sign shorter deals to lower the cap hit to make it fit around the cap space they do have. Leafs are hamstrung for the next 2 years anyways waiting for the Tavares contract to expire along with the cap going up to $92M+, when they can start to fill out their roster.

$2 million dollars isn't nothing and having that amount of dead money on the cap next year may prevent us from signing a good support piece. If we want to avoid having dead cap (which this team should to a desperate degree), getting rid of Murray without using the buyout is crucial, and it might cost us more to move him than what we received to take him in the first place to get him out of here and the team under the cap. That's assuming the Leafs don't send Murray to Robidas Island which would solve this entire issue, but wouldn't excuse Dubas from making the trade in the first place, as I'm sure he wasn't planning to LTIR Murray in the final year of his deal.

They can always deal Sami's rights and then run it back with Murray and Woll. Then try to find another goalie on the fly when Murray goes down. Maybe get Alex Stalock on a $1M one way deal as some insurance first. Not what I would do but it depends on how badly they don't want the buyout cost and how much faith they have in Woll. Tre doesn't know him at all..

Yes they COULD make a stupid decision like giving Matt Murray the starting job but Why would they do that?

It is really more stupid going with Woll as potential starter and murray and sign an other goalie as 3rd string as back up option than starting season with murray/samsonov or with campbell alone?

Samsonov at 4,5-5M... now sure if its really better than Murray at the same salary...

Personally i have a higher faith in Woll than Samsonov...

Arbitration can only reward a 1 year deal correct? I can see him getting a 1 year deal at 3.8 million.

Let Samsonov walk go with Murray to start the season, play him until he's LTIR'd and then pick up a goalie on the market to back-up Woll.

Just run out emergency backup keepers and play defense in front.

I would argue by having $2m less in cap space next year, it forces Nylander and Matthews to take less. If you try and keep it, those two will just scoop it up, which is actually worse long-term. The reality for this team is that they are not good enough to win anything, they are in a holding pattern for the next two seasons anyway until the Tavares money comes off the books and the cap goes up to $92m+.

TSN Hockey Analyst and former NHL goalie Martin Biron was on SportsCentre last night and was asked about the large gap between the Leafs and Samsonov's filings and where believes the two will settle.

"I don't think you can meet in the middle at $3.675M. I think you have to start at $4M at the very least for Ilya Samsonov," said Biron. "There's 26 active NHL goaltenders that are going to make over $4M next year. Ilya Samsonov is better than probably half of those guys. He was 8th in the league last year in goals saved above expected per game."

Biron's predicted AAV and Samsonov's ask are both below the predicted AAV that Evolving Hockey has listed for Samsonov. They have predicted a 4-year deal with an AAV of $5.1M, so if the Leafs can sign Samsonov for under Evolving Hockey's prediction and his requested arbitration number, the deal should be considered a win for the Leafs.

Sammy is asking for $4.9 mil, Leafs offered $2.4 mil per. Sammy had a really up and down career with Wash and had one good year with Toronto and you can't reward an up and down goalie on one year, that is what Toronto is banking on. Sammy is going to say that goalies develop late and the guy he was last year is the guy he is going to be the rest of his career.

The hearing is on Friday?

What was Biron saying Campbell should get? Based on his limited success I am sure he was better than over half those guys too.

Was in Vezina talk to start the year.

Biron is just going to bat for another goalie and is not using logic at all.

Why does the media keep advocating for our players to get overpaid

I'll wait to hear what Peter Ing has to say, thank you.

I've worried over these arbitration cases too much in the past. I should probably just ignore it until the last minute contract agreement or the arbitration ruling is announced. However it does feel like the team's fortunes for the 2023-24 season rest on getting Samsonov under contract.

Samsonov has mostly avoided getting smoke blown up his ass during these negotiations but now with his hearing upon us the media is doing what they do best, inflating our players worth to try and tip the scales towards an overpay rather than a fair value contract, or God forbid a discounted one even.

Look I like Sammy a lot, I think he could be the guy for us in net long term. However, he hasn’t proven enough to warrant a contract that starts with a 4. The sample size for him as a starter is still small.

Sammy crapped the bed in the playoffs and doesn’t deserve a 4 year deal 4-5.

3.5m x 3 years...who says no?
Without knowing how bad Matthews and Willy are going to screw the team over it’s hard to commit more than 1 year to anyone…………one more reason to get both those contract signed……….but hey what’s the rush

I have zero faith in Woll long term or in being a starter ever.

I think his legs are too slow and has below average lateral movement.
he's also a bit slow following/tracking the puck behind his net
i.e. the OT goal where he didnt even notice the puck coming back out.

I'd sign Samsonov and then try to move all 3 goalies and target one i actual trusted to be the starter and backup.
We have better quality goalies in the pipeline than usual (finally) but the soonest may not be ready for 2-3 years

Logon Thompson is even rumored to be available now... but, dont know how severe his injury was, and 'lower body' injuries for goalies (if groin) can be chronic.

but beat Vassy, and the Leafs were outplayed in that series.
he also entered the playoffs hurt and played through injury until Schenn knocked him out.

mind you, i wouldnt give him 4-5 either, but, he certainly didnt crap the bed in the playoffs.
