Potentially interesting right? What happens if an award plunges a team in to non-compliance? It’s a deal as soon as it is announced, they can’t know what it will be, what’s a team to do? Correct me if I’m wrong, but the CBA doesn’t imagine this scenario right?

11.6? The NHL rejects it? But then Sammy is meant to revert to qualified RFA status right, and it becomes circular.

Might have arbitration on the arbitration coming lol..
thats the whole point of the buyout window....team expected to buy someone out to get compliant.

if it is a number we don't like; chances are that number won't be liked with majority of the teams so that means trading him won't be as easy.

Also we need 2 goalies anyway; can't bank on Murray; so we are kinda desperate to get Sammy on our side and stay on at least for this season given the cap constraints.

If anything, Murray may get bought out, traded or LTIR'd. I prefer Murray going to LTIR that way Murray gets to keep the entire salary and can use the time to heal and get into the mix next year as a UFA goalie. TBD of course
Yeah but by all accounts wasn't Murray skating/practicing during the playoffs and close to being ready? I doubt he just agrees to take a full year off if he's fine (it's a big if, I know).

And Shea Weber played in Game 5 of the finals vs Tampa Bay and limped off into LTIR retirement thereafter.
Bit different, no? Weber playing through injury in the Finals which is normal, vs. Murray recovering through the playoffs to the point where he might be ready if the Leafs moved on beyond the 2nd round. One guy ends the playoffs hurt, the other ends the playoffs seemingly healthy.

We are so lucky to be Leafs fans.

So many teams have keepers under contract, players signed, rosters almost set and get a summer of absolutely nothing of importance to concern themselves with.

Okay, if the Leafs folded I'd miss them, but it wouldn't change my life any more than the Expos moving out of Montreal.

But it's like watching a slowly moving accident, with a chance no one is injured, or cars damaged.

Kyle Dubas’ sales pitch to every damn free agent over the years has been “come here and bet on yourself.” It’s a team built on a short term mercenary mentality.

I personally think the 2mil buyout concern is a bit overblown. There’s a ton of money coming off the cap before considering Murray, and a load of contract spots opening up, too. The cap’s probably going up that 2mil anyway, and there’s only AM, WN and TL to resign to term.
Meanwhile, assuming those three are all signed (and possibly Sammy depending on what happens with him) there’s already 5 top 6 forwards on the roster, 3 top 4 D, two key goalies and Kampf/Jarnkrok/Holmberg/Reaves/Timmins under contract for next year. That’s 15/21 spots full, 8 of the 10 most important skater spots, and goaltending lined up. It’s not that much of a mess.

The other RFA’s down below will be cost effective.

And there’s a bunch of Marlies who will have another year under their belt in competition for jobs, min free agents.

Positioning looks perfectly fine to me, with little reason to expect regressions.
Agreed. The cap is expected to go up $4m next year, it should already be at $92m.

Murray doesn’t come across as a player who is ever “healthy” by normal standards. Just “healthy” for Matt Murray standards.

Yeah I prefaced it in my first post by saying it was a big if. My only point was that I recall him practicing during the playoffs and that was 3 months ago, so if he's continued to progress well and feels okay, he won't just agree to take a year off to help the Leafs.

Problem is we’ve already been spending that extra cap cushion in so many imaginary ways.
I agree, but next year is a holding pattern until that Tavares money comes off the books, at which point they can build out their team properly. They are not winning anything over the next 2 years anyway, so it doesn't matter.

He hasn’t been fine for a number of years now

That’s the X factor. As a guy on the Internet I see a plausible narrative of injuries and $8 million in unpaid salary that would make LTIR a real possibility… but it depends on how much Murray thinks he has left in the tank and whether he would take a buyout to keep his career going this season. Or take the money and face a more uncertain future in 2024.

For sure, I can see your point as well.

he can always have season ending surgery to finally fix his groin, and then have a proper recovery period and try to re-establish himself.
Concussions can temporarily retire players too, until they 'feel' right

Murray just turned 29. Good chance if he's bought out some team would give him $1.5m-$2m for 2023-24. Leaving him down $700k to $1.2m while continuing his career.

The arbitrator is supposed to announce an award with 48 hours. However there have been many times in the past where it took 3-4 days.
I would doubt it will happen over the weekend.

Plus, it's not that simple. Isn't the league using 3rd party/independent doctors to assess the LTIR cases because of the Leafs being blamed for shady LTIR in the past, and the whole Hossa allergic to his equipment issue.....

Can't just pretend to be hurt, and take the money and sail off to Robidas Island without passing by Confirmation Cove.

He was cleared to play and was Woll’s backup for the last 2 playoff games in May. What happened between now and then that suggests he should go on LTIR? I don't think that is an option at this time. He could always hurt himself in training camp, though.
