It's a little frustrating that goaltending sank the Flames season while this kid was dominating the AHL but I guess that's the limitation of waivers
He also could have come up to the NHL and gotten lit up a few times and lost all confidence. Goalies are hard to predict and him being in the AHL all year May be a blessing in disguise if he gets to avoid the mess the flames are this year.

This kid is a generational talent. There is no blowing his confidence.

I agree, Complain about goaltending problems pretty much off and on all year but the kid that is just dominating the AHL doesn't even get a consideration for a start . Trade him somewhere that will give him a chance. Just terrible luck for the kid that he is with Calgary and Sutter, probabl6y would have got a chance by now elsewhere.

If he doesn't play in the NHL next year it is definitely an issue. However, playing at the AHL level as a 21 year old goalie is never a bad thing.

Crazy management signing turds like that when you have a stud like that in the minors. Minny did it right with Wallsted. They will ride out Fleury and Wallsted moves in.

Looks like Buffalo is doing it properly with Levi also He will step in when the existing contracts are over, which is soon.l .

Yeah. But to expect him to be on the team would mean to expect the Flames to trade one of their other goalies.

I think he should be in the NHL too, but seems unlikely.
Why is trading Vladar, for example, unlikely? They have arguably the best G prospect in the league, who will be coming off back to back goalie of the year awards. Why is it unlikely that they try to get him to the NHL for next season, or during the season?

Exactly this. I think it's an awful position to start him in the NHL this year. I do think he could be in the NHL now, but trade Vladar and let him start next season as Markstrom's backup without pressure

Because he's meh backup who will be on a $2.2M AAV. Not exactly a hot commodity. I don't doubt they could ditch Vladar if they wanted to, but no one else will want him.

Personally I would call him up and see if he could save the season. But I do think it’s good he’s got another season with so many games.

Yeah it looks like Vladar is a goner. I’m guessing a team like Montreal gives us a 2nd rounder cause he has shown flashes of starter material. I still would move on from Markstrom if possible. But him and Wolf is pretty intriguing. Personally I still try to trade Markstrom.

This is false. He’s shown glimpses of being a really good goalie. There is a lack of young goalies with high potential out there.

Honestly the most likely situation is everything stays status quo for the rest of this season with every goalie in our organization staying where they are, and next year at training camp it’s an all out battle for the backup spot between Wolf and Vladar. It’ll be up to Wolf to outplay Vladar and show he’s the best option for the backup role. Calgary likely wants to run it back next year and bank on a lot of this season being an outlier (they already set an NHL record for losses while outshooting teams by 10+, and they aren’t far off the record for Ot/shootout losses), they will play whichever goalie shows them they will give the team the best chance to win any given night. If Wolf wins, Vladar gets traded for a 2nd/3rd to whatever team comes out of training camp needing a goalie. If Vladar wins, Wolf probably spends the next year in the AHL again, and the Flames fans collectively lose their mind and call Sutter/the organization a bunch of dinosaurs for making a reasonable decision. Calgary would probably love the cap savings going from Vladar to Wolf as it’s going to very tight at the start of next season, but will also probably be weary of an unproven commodity being depended on for 20-30 games, so it should come down entirely to their play.

I was surprised on his draft position when it happened. I really thought he would go higher because of his dominance in the WHL and I imagine if he was 6’3, he would have. I thought it was a steal for Calgary then and I think even more so now.

Kind of like how DeBrincat who was a monster in junior slipper due to his size despite not being soft or a pushover, Wolf did too despite his size not impacting his game at all. He’s a very smart goalie who makes the right moves all the time.

I think this guy is the real deal and it’s only a matter of time before they call him up.

Yeah fair enough. I guess I just see Wolf outperforming Vladar and forcing their hand.

...when? He's rocking a nice .895 this season. That's not going to be in high demand.

He's 25. Which I guess is a young for a goalie but not up-and-coming.

Teams can also find meh goalies off the scrap heap in UFA. Someone like Samsonov came cheaper and with less commitment.

LOL you mean the same Ilya Samsonov who is 26 and posted a .896 last year?

Lmao too much irony in this post

Vladar is a good young goalie. I would keep him easily if they can trade Markstrom

Samsonov also signed for league min. because nobody wanted him.

His point was that nobody is going to give up anything for Vladar when he makes $2.2 mil. If Calgary retains 50% maybe you get a mid round pick.

I don't know, implying that the Flames are just stuck with their current tandem for two more years seems a bit flawed. Plenty of bad players (not that I think Vladar is bad) get traded all the time, and his price tag isn't that high.

The more the Flames goalies get lit up the more likely Wolf gets that chance next year. Seems like Flames fans agree.

Embarassing, as a jets fan is the inept race for the final playoff spot between Nashville , Calgary and Winnipeg. Normally, a team can't afford to lose a game this time of year without playoff consequences, none of them seem to be able to win any games lol. Right now, Jets have the upper hand at limping in to the final playoff spot but can't help but think Dustin Wolf could have been the difference maker in getting to playoffs for Calgary this year. Even though I am a Wolf fan, as a Jets fan, I hope they now wait till next year.

Yes. That same Samsonov. He was available for free (no trade cost) and ended up with a cheaper cap hit than Vladar.

Why would anyone trade for Vladar when you can find roughly equivalent (or better) goalies on the UFA market at no acquisition cost and a lower AAV?

I kinda started this whole Vladar tangent. My points were 1) Yes, the Flames should have Wolf on the roster, but they already have 2 goalies locked up, and 2) they certainly will be able to disappear Vladar if they choose, but it won't be for any value because no one will want him.
