He also could have come up to the NHL and gotten lit up a few times and lost all confidence. Goalies are hard to predict and him being in the AHL all year May be a blessing in disguise if he gets to avoid the mess the flames are this year. It's a little frustrating that goaltending sank the Flames season while this kid was dominating the AHL but I guess that's the limitation of waivers
This kid is a generational talent. There is no blowing his confidence. He also could have come up to the NHL and gotten lit up a few times and lost all confidence. Goalies are hard to predict and him being in the AHL all year May be a blessing in disguise if he gets to avoid the mess the flames are this year.
If he doesn't play in the NHL next year it is definitely an issue. However, playing at the AHL level as a 21 year old goalie is never a bad thing.I agree, Complain about goaltending problems pretty much off and on all year but the kid that is just dominating the AHL doesn't even get a consideration for a start . Trade him somewhere that will give him a chance. Just terrible luck for the kid that he is with Calgary and Sutter, probabl6y would have got a chance by now elsewhere.
They would have to move one of Markstrom or Vladar, both are under contract for at least the next two years.Unreal numbers. I'm expecting him to be on the Flames next year. Hopefully at least!
I'm aware. That doesn't mean it won't happen. They would have to move one of Markstrom or Vladar, both are under contract for at least the next two years.
Yeah. But to expect him to be on the team would mean to expect the Flames to trade one of their other goalies.I'm aware. That doesn't mean it won't happen.
Why is trading Vladar, for example, unlikely? They have arguably the best G prospect in the league, who will be coming off back to back goalie of the year awards. Why is it unlikely that they try to get him to the NHL for next season, or during the season?Yeah. But to expect him to be on the team would mean to expect the Flames to trade one of their other goalies.
I think he should be in the NHL too, but seems unlikely.
Exactly this. I think it's an awful position to start him in the NHL this year. I do think he could be in the NHL now, but trade Vladar and let him start next season as Markstrom's backup without pressureIf he doesn't play in the NHL next year it is definitely an issue. Because he's meh backup who will be on a $2.2M AAV. Not exactly a hot commodity. I don't doubt they could ditch Vladar if they wanted to, but no one else will want him.Why is trading Vladar, for example, unlikely? Personally I would call him up and see if he could save the season. But I do think it’s good he’s got another season with so many games.Exactly this. This is false. He’s shown glimpses of being a really good goalie. There is a lack of young goalies with high potential out there.Because he's meh backup who will be on a $2.2M AAV. Not exactly a hot commodity. I don't doubt they could ditch Vladar if they wanted to, but no one else will want him.
Honestly the most likely situation is everything stays status quo for the rest of this season with every goalie in our organization staying where they are, and next year at training camp it’s an all out battle for the backup spot between Wolf and Vladar. It’ll be up to Wolf to outplay Vladar and show he’s the best option for the backup role. Calgary likely wants to run it back next year and bank on a lot of this season being an outlier (they already set an NHL record for losses while outshooting teams by 10+, and they aren’t far off the record for Ot/shootout losses), they will play whichever goalie shows them they will give the team the best chance to win any given night. If Wolf wins, Vladar gets traded for a 2nd/3rd to whatever team comes out of training camp needing a goalie. If Vladar wins, Wolf probably spends the next year in the AHL again, and the Flames fans collectively lose their mind and call Sutter/the organization a bunch of dinosaurs for making a reasonable decision. Calgary would probably love the cap savings going from Vladar to Wolf as it’s going to very tight at the start of next season, but will also probably be weary of an unproven commodity being depended on for 20-30 games, so it should come down entirely to their play. Why is trading Vladar, for example, unlikely? Yeah fair enough. I guess I just see Wolf outperforming Vladar and forcing their hand.Honestly the most likely situation is everything stays status quo for the rest of this season with every goalie in our organization staying where they are, and next year at training camp it’s an all out battle for the backup spot between Wolf and Vladar. ...when? He's rocking a nice .895 this season. That's not going to be in high demand. This is false. He’s shown glimpses of being a really good goalie. There is a lack of young goalies with high potential out there.
LOL you mean the same Ilya Samsonov who is 26 and posted a .896 last year?...when? He's rocking a nice .895 this season. That's not going to be in high demand.
He's 25. Which I guess is a young for a goalie but not up-and-coming.
Teams can also find meh goalies off the scrap heap in UFA. Someone like Samsonov came cheaper and with less commitment.
Samsonov also signed for league min. because nobody wanted him.LOL you mean the same Ilya Samsonov who is 26 and posted a .896 last year?
Lmao too much irony in this post
Vladar is a good young goalie. I would keep him easily if they can trade Markstrom
I don't know, implying that the Flames are just stuck with their current tandem for two more years seems a bit flawed. Plenty of bad players (not that I think Vladar is bad) get traded all the time, and his price tag isn't that high.Samsonov also signed for league min. because nobody wanted him.
His point was that nobody is going to give up anything for Vladar when he makes $2.2 mil. If Calgary retains 50% maybe you get a mid round pick.
Yes. That same Samsonov. He was available for free (no trade cost) and ended up with a cheaper cap hit than Vladar.LOL you mean the same Ilya Samsonov who is 26 and posted a .896 last year?

I kinda started this whole Vladar tangent. My points were 1) Yes, the Flames should have Wolf on the roster, but they already have 2 goalies locked up, and 2) they certainly will be able to disappear Vladar if they choose, but it won't be for any value because no one will want him.I don't know, implying that the Flames are just stuck with their current tandem for two more years seems a bit flawed. The more the Flames goalies get lit up the more likely Wolf gets that chance next year. Seems like Flames fans agree.
