In reality, he didn't really have a "slow start". The Wranglers D was among the worst I have ever seen for a professional organization. Like shockingly bad. Wolf was the only reason the score didn't get run up an absurd amount most games in the early going.
You can make arguments about why the D ought to be good, personnel wise or system wise. The fact of the matter is watching the games they were an atrociously bad group to start the season. So plainly in fact I would have to question the credibility of anyone who argued otherwise. To deny that speaks only to a personal agenda.100% disagree with that assessment. The Wranglers/Flames system is in full effect here. The Wranglers are stacked on D. This is the AHL. All of them can skate and they have a lot of pro experience. The Flames org as a whole is very stacked with defensively capable dmen. Very underrated system.
Gilbert - 57 nhl games, including a handful this season where he was fine at the nhl level, Best NCAA defensive dman
DeSimone, 4 nhl games this year - really liked him on the right side.
Meloche - 70 nhl games including 50 last year, fine ahl player
Poolman - Best defensive dman in the NCAA pretty recently too
All 4 are really good defensively at the AHL level for sure. Then you have the kids. Who are not as strong defensively but they don't play the kids together. Very few AHL teams have the kind of depth this team has on defense.
Is Wolf playing good? Yes. But you can't say this dcore is shockingly bad with a straight face.

Yeah, you. This will age poorly. Cant wait. Some of you have zero understanding of hockey or how things work, very bad sense of the game especially at the position, something I played at a very high level and have spoken about before if you want to read my post history. You can be a good prospect but still have holes in your game. That should be plainly understood. There's a reason he's playing in the AHL and not NHL.

He is playing in the AHL because the Flames have 2 NHL caliber goalies and because Wolf is a 21 y/o goalie. What an asinine thing to say.
What an awful take. I am a season ticket holder for the Wranglers and have been to about half their games. The D corps down there is not good at all defensively. Wolf was seeing 10 bell chances all night long. It's why his goals saved about expected is tops in the league while his save percentage is 4th.lol please. Bold watching the games more, I've endure the pains of their AHL announcer many times this season.
I think you and I are saying the same thing.
The Defense and system is good if not great.
The same team and system in front of Wolf early on struggled. I even said this in the post people are ripping me for.
"but the team in front of him has been pretty bad"
I don't see how people are arguing me except for the fact that I'm stating truths that go counter to your narratives about your team's favourite prospects.

Another awful take. They have 2 NHL Calibre goalies who are struggling whether its the defense or what you can't deny that. If Wolf was as good as posters in this thread think, he would have been given the nod. Do you think if management in a win now mode had a player that could out perform either goalie and get more wins they'd be like... "nah lets keep him there in the ahl, he's amazing better yet... he won goalie of the year... and he's sooo good lets resign Vladar in season (mid to late October) for 2 more years because Wolf is ready and has no holes". And if you can't see Wolf outperforming either of those players right now... who are struggling, why are you arguing with me?
Yes I forgot... he's 21... not like bonafide nhl goalies like Gibson, Saros, Hart, Knight, Vasi, Fleury, Varlamov, Halak, Korpisalo, Georgiev ever got a shot when they were 21. So asinine. It's not that he's 21, it's that he has holes in his game that need to be further addressed.
Figured it’s worth bringing up fresh off him winning goalie of the month for December. Dustin Wolf now leads the AHL in wins, shutouts, minutes played, shots faced and saves. Out of goalies who have played atleast 15 games. He ranks first in GAA (2.09) and second in save percentage (.932).
He is well on his way to winning goalie of the year in the AHL again if he keeps his play up, as his stats are actually better than his previous season. If he wins it, that would be the 4th consecutive season he’s won the honor for whatever league he plays in. There’s really no precedent for what he is accomplishing right now, his ceiling is sky high in the NHL.
Pretty impressive. Hopefully we can see him in the NHL soon, even for a game or two before the end of this season.Figured it’s worth bringing up fresh off him winning goalie of the month for December. They'll probably have to move him to wing.Too small to ever have an impact in the NHL.
Maybe he will have to play in JapanThey'll probably have to move him to wing.
