Yes. That same Samsonov. He was available for free (no trade cost) and ended up with a cheaper cap hit than Vladar.

Why would anyone trade for Vladar when you can find roughly equivalent (or better) goalies on the UFA market at no acquisition cost and a lower AAV?

I kinda started this whole Vladar tangent. My points were 1) Yes, the Flames should have Wolf on the roster, but they already have 2 goalies locked up, and 2) they certainly will be able to disappear Vladar if they choose, but it won't be for any value because no one will want him.

Who cares? Goalies never carry much value anyways. They would be moving him to open up a spot for Wolf, not to maximize return. There's always a backup goalie carousel every offseason.

His recent games stats are just so out of this hockey world...

In his last 5 games, he has faced 164 shots,.... 160 saved.... lol
In his last 4 games, he has faced 124 shots... 121 saved.. double lol
In his last 4 games, 3 shut outs.... triple lol

And oh yeah... all 5 games, you guessed it; wins

.976 sv% - 0.80 gaa - while facing 32.8 shots per game

For anyone who watches the Wranglers, is their style conducive to a high save percentage? Or does wolf face very high quality shots on a consistent basis and bails the defence out? Stats seems unreal and I’m definitely wondering the context around them.

They are nothing special. Look at the other goalies that have played with him and Oscar Dansk at .901 is the best.

I’d consider their coach, Mitch Love, for a head coaching job in the NHL. they’ve won the division in back to back years but I honestly think he’s probably just a solid AHL coach with a goalie that’s too good for the league.

They're OK defensively but they breakdown like any other AHL team. Wolf shuts down a lot of good opportunities and does himself a lot of favors by not allowing many rebounds. Calm and collected in the crease.

What sets him apart from his peers is his IQ. Reads plays extremely well and is economic in his movements. When you're so rarely off your angle you just don't give shooters much to shoot at.

The stat splits are actually staggering.
Dustin Wolf: 37-9-2, 2.12GAA, .931%
Oscar Dansk: 6-5-2, 2.84GAA, .901%
Daniil Chechelev: 1-1-0, 3.37GAA, .881%

The Wranglers are pushing to try and be 1st in the AHL this year, and have lost more games than they’ve won when Wolf doesn’t start.

Bonus crazy Wolf facts:

-Since the second game of December, Wolf has played in 34 games. In only 8 of those games has he had a save percentage under .900, while he has 7 shutouts in that span. You are pretty much just as likely to see Wolf have a shutout as you are to see him have “an off night” by his standards.

-In that same time span, Wolf has only allowed a 3rd goal in 11 of those 34 games, while allowing 4+ only 3 times. Wolf having a bad game means the other team scores a 3rd time, in a league where only 5 of the 32 teams aren’t scoring above a 3 goal per game rate.

Just wanted to share my thoughts after watching last night's game. I was genuinely impressed by him, who proved that size isn't everything in hockey. His Hockey IQ is outstanding and compensates for his lack of size.

A few things that caught my eye:

  1. Active stick: He's constantly using his stick to disrupt plays.
  2. Passing skills: Multiple breakout passes demonstrated his strength in this area.
  3. Agility and vision: He's super agile and can see through screens effectively.
It's always great to see a player defy expectations and show that talent and skill can come in various forms. What do you guys think? Any other thoughts on his performance?

Sums it up quite well.
Really all I would add is that he keeps his feet more than a lot of goalies I've watched. Very proactive with his movement. There's some big goalies who can get away with playing that blocking style of being down early and being large. Wolf isn't one of them and whoever coaches him has done a good job of polishing and improving the things he excels at and adapting his style to the individual.

He feels like a anomaly, something that is supposed to be impossible.
7 games, 7 wins, 7 goals allowed, 97% of the pucks saved.
He's been doing this stuff for FOUR years straight. If he were 2 inches taller, he would be considered the best goalie prospect in the last ten years.

He reads the game at such a high level which means he's almost never out of position. That way he can be more aggressive and cover more of the net.

I pray that he doesn't fall to the Flames' absolutely cursed goalie development record.

Flames could have used some hot goaltender this year
Bringing him up for a few games might be the difference for the Flames making the playoffs

Played every season (min. 20 games) since his rookie WHL year in 17-18 with a SV% of .924 or higher. Gotta think we have another Saros here.

It'll be pretty thrilling to see if Levi pans out the same way as we hope Wolf might and Canada/USA can have an elite undersized 7th rounder goalie battle for years to come.

Continues to dominate. Now at:

40-9-2
2.08 GAA
0.932 SV%
7 Shutouts

I don't follow the AHL too closely, but surely he'll be a favourite for league MVP?
I can’t see them giving it to anyone else. Best player on the best team. He arguably could/should have won it last year too.
