Well tbf, if I was NHLer chosen for ASG and heard I was taking part in SplashShot or some other off-ice crappy gimmick, I would probably break a finger so I wouldnt have to go.

I ask myself the same thing when they hand their gloves to the trainers to put them on the glove-warming machine during games.
Imagine how brutal it would be to play with the i-pad with cold fingers!
Borderline cruelty.

I understand the instinct to call the players “babies” for having this opinion, but don’t you think they roll their eyes at the All Star Game/weekend just as much as most of us do? They know it’s a gimmick as well as anyone. I don’t mind them saying “hey make this completely pointless thing in the middle of the season at least somewhat bearable”.

The players are made into props for a weekend as basically a pure money grab for the league that has nothing to do with actual hockey. Put it where the players want if you insist on having it.

Moronic take. Obviousy they'd rather go to Miami for 4 days then f***ing Winnipeg or Edmonton. Give your head a shake.
if you read the last part of his statement--you will get what his rant was about

Do you know WHY the all star game was created--Not sure if he is being sarcastic--but is greatly removed from WHY is was started

0 chance the NHL cancels the ASG.

Its a huge revenue machine and apparently Sponsors love it!

you cancel the ASG then you better be also in favor of the CAP going way down.
Can't see how one allstar game has any tangible affect on the salary cap.

Well, according to the latest stats from Gary Bettman, the players LOVE cold climate All-Star game locations, just like the fans LOVE the digital board advertisements!

Every all star game should be an outdoor game in cold temperatures and we could install Cry Cams everywhere and watch the players bitch about it

According to Friedman there has been an overwhelming response from NHL players that they dislike participating in the All-Star game weekend festivities and commitment. NHL teams have expressed that it is becoming increasingly harder and harder to get their players to want to go to the ASG.

The NHL met with All-Stars yesterday to try and come up with a solution on how to entice players to the event.

Friedman says that the overwhelming response is that players only want the ASG to be in hot weather/family ideal locations.

Friedman says that the NHL really took this to heart and are thinking of limiting the ASG to a circuit of a few cities, (Ala Superbowl)

Friedman mentions that the cities would be places such as , Florida, Tampa, Dallas, Arizona, Caliornia teams, Westocast.
I finally tacked down where Friedman said this. It was on this morning’s Jeff Marek show with guest host Matt Marchese.

The OP has certainly put his own spin on what Friedman actually said.

First of all, in regards to the conversation between the NHL and the All-Stars about getting more players to want to come 5o the ASG, Friedman actually said that one of the responses was ”We like coming here this time of year.” Friedman never said that it was overwhelming or that the players only want to come to warm weather cities. It should also be pointed out this is a response from All-Stars who have chosen to attend an ASG in South Florida, so it may be a biased and I suspect that the NHL will talk to a lot more players before making any kind of decision.

Friedman also says nothing about the NHL really taking that response to heart or that the NHL is looking at limiting the number of cities where they hold the ASG. He just says he thinks that’s what they’re going to do. He offers no support for that conclusion, so it’s hard to tell how much is based things he’s heard from NHL executives and how much is pure speculation.

Finally, when he talks about what cities he thinks might be in a limited ASG rotation, he also includes Toronto, Montreal, New York, and Chicago. This list feels like pure speculation to me, although it is possible that he has some inside info that supports the idea of warm coy/big city list.

Personal Opinion: Friedman talks an awful lot about the weather and being right on the beach and he is clearly enjoying the warm weather break. I have to wonder how much of this limited list of ASG cities is something that the NHL is actually thinking about and how much of it is simply an idea of Friedman’s that he is trying to push. I definitely get the impression that he’d like to go somewhere warm every ASG break.

When players teammates are all taking a break to recharge for the final 30 games of the season, the guys who go to the ASG want to do the same. If you’re an older player you want to spend that time with the family and let them go out and about to do things.

Doesn’t matter much to me.

But the nhl is a far cry from the nba in both attitude of the players who get selected and the locations they go to.

Yet we have nhl agents who whine about that nhlers make.

The sport isn’t at the top like the nfl or nba. But it’s way higher than Lacrosse and women’s team sports who have to either make less or have to do way more selling of their sport.

So players can either appreciate that they have it way better than those below them in that they have virtually all of the luxuries of the other big sports like chartered flights, 5 star hotels, facilities, etc. but money wise they aren’t in the same conversation as the other men’s teams sports. Because they won’t go and promote sell the sport like the ones below them to grow the game more and make that extra money.

That sounds amazing. Take your family on a vacation where you can't participate in the activities.
Apparently, not having enough free time to spend with their families at ASG time was a complaint from past years and this year, the NHL and the PA worked to make sure th3 players had more free time.

I know why it was initially created. But things change over time.

I mean if it has a positive impact on HRR then the players as a collective get 50%.
Which brings it back to. 90%+ of the players get a week off to do whatever. 10% without any extra pay goes to work to make money for the NHL. A portion of which then gets spread out over the entire player base. And people have an issue with making the situation as palatable to that 10% as possible?

It depends if you feel the All-Star game should be reward and celebration of the best players that year or a NHL marketing/ fan event that players are obligated to participate in. I mean, I'd go if it was a paid family trip to a nice location, but if my teammates had trip to golf to Bermuda and I had to go to Toronto with -20 wind chills, my hamstring would probably act up.

I don't really care much about the ASG and they should probably find a way to make it more appealing to a wider audience, but being paid millions to play a game on ice and complaining about going somewhere cold is hilarious.

That's alright, climate change will have it being held in Winnipeg annually by the end of the decade.
Uh no it won't.....Winnipeg will always remain a brutally cold place....just like most places in Canada.....

The winning team gets $1 million in prize money. So that's pretty decent for half assessing it for 2 days.

That's f***ing bullshit. I get the family side of things, but the weather? Suck it up! Edmonton hasn't had an Allstar game in over 30 years, and if the NHL basically wipes Edmonton, or Calgary for that matter (almost 40 years) off the designation, I'll be very pissed off.
