Getting as far as we did last season was pretty remarkable. Almost everything that could have gone wrong last season did. Staal missed a huge portion of the season. Richards and Gaborik sucked ass which saw the latter traded for depth. Callahan and Hagelin playing hurt all season. A concussed Nash. A bunch of new faces with a rather makeshift bottom six, and a coach whose style was wearing thin on his players.

As long as Lundqvist stay healthy, I don't see why we couldn't have the potential to be in the top 5 teams in the East and make noise in the playoffs with a relatively healthy team and a little luck.

Marc Staal missed HUGE portions of the last 2 seasons...we still weren't a bubble team.

With the impressive run they needed to go on last year to sneak into 6th I would say they were definitely a bubble team. Weren't they in 9th going into the last week or at some point during it? Bubble team to me does not mean out of the playoffs...it means 6th-10th maybe in / maybe out but a longshot contender.

2011-2012 had the perfect amount of buy in and team play needed to outwork their way to first in the East. They didn't have that same amount of commitment from the forwards defensively in 2013 and Staal's absence was more noticeable. Additionally, Sauer was huge in the first half of 11-12 for eating Staal's lost minutes.

On vacation and saw that Grabovski was bought out. I'd go after him. The top 6 needs an infusion of talent. Creates more depth and flexibility in the top 6.

Without a trade, we don't have the cap space to sign him

And also a 48 game season.

Oh, I agree.

However to say we weren't a bubble team this past season is unfortunately not true...whether it was because of coaching, lack of camp/offseason training, or that's how good we really are...well we'll find out this year.

I do believe that we are much better though.

edit

Also would love to stay away from Grabo, I think we've learned our lesson about offensively skilled lazy players

Stepan is next not arb eligible so neither can file to prevent an OS even though I'm not really worried about anyone doing it

You're right, he's lazy because he's lazy.

I disagree. He busted his ass very often and really tried to play his best. Carlyle and him hate each other however, and was never a fit in his system. He'd be a great addition to the team but he'd be very costly.

How are we going to afford this? We're not going to add to the Top 6 forwards through FA. It's impossible.

Based off his comments, his biggest priority seems to be to stick to Toronto. He's getting a tidy sum from the Leafs as it is, I don't think he's one to wade the stream.

You're talking about Grabovski, right? He was bought out, so he can't play for toronto. And he had some choice words for Carlyle after he was bought out. He wouldn't go back there even if he could.

Sorry I meant to say stick it to Toronto  I know he doesn't want to go back. Made that quiteee clear.

I think the word "it" was missing there. As in "stick it to Toronto."
