Stepan's contract

5 years

First season between $2.5M-$3M. 3 arbitration years between $3M-$4M. The fifth year is a group III year. Worth over $4M. $4.5M. Players like Oshie and Perron are making $4.25M-$4.5M in their group III years. AAV slightly below $4M. Ballpark around $4M. In that range.

$2.75M
$3M
( )
( )
$4.5M

First 2 years are based after Couture's 2 year bridge contract. $2.75M and $3M.

Staal was not arbitration eligible in 2010 and got a 5 year deal worth $19.875M. $3.975M.

I'm not advocating letting Zuccarello walk or signing Jagr, but Jagr had more points last season than Zuccarello has in his career.

Look, I love Jagr--I can still remember watching him during Pittsburgh's first Stanley Cup run back in 1991 and just knowing how good that kid was going to be.

That said, he's over 40 and you just don't know how much is left in the tank--especially over a full season. Plus, he ain't going to be signing for anyway near a million bucks.

Whether Zuccarello has less points in his career has nothing to do with whether he should be re-signed or not. (and by the way SBOB, I know you're not "advocating" either way). Signing him is the only way we'll know if he can reach his potential--and I for one, would like to watch go for it next season as well. He adds excitement on the ice-something that has been sorely lacking for a while now around here.

I understand Brook. And I don't disagree. And I don't like Jagr.

I think this team is building both now and for the future simultaneously. I think giving a kid like Zucc who has real talent and the ability to be a long term cheap top 6 option for this team is preferable to letting him slip for one year of Jagr, who did not look to be a difference maker in Boston and might create a power struggle with Callahan.

I'd rather not go the jagr route. It's not who we are anymore and it'll just confound the way we play and think of ourselves. It'll make things more complicated than it has to be.

Everybody is saying 3 or 5 years for Stepan, we know it won't be 4, but why not 6?
6 years at 4.25 Mil? Buys 2 years of FA, hits UFA when he is 29, still time for 1 more big contract.

Keep Zucc for cheap. He's a great asset in the regular season when the checking isn't so tight.

If you can, take his production up to the trade deadline and then deal him. You will have seen what the 'pro'spects are worth at the NHL level and if needed, deal for weakness (probably big winger).

Further beyond Zucc's playing abilities, you can tell he has a genuine team heart. He is so excited when someone else scores. Guy has the biggest smile on his face. He is definitely a light in the locker room, in my opinion.

Going off what I see, not anything I read

5 years/19 mil for Stepan
2 years/4.5 mil for Hagelin
2 years/2.5 mil for Zucc
1 year/925k for Falk

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $64,281,667; BONUSES: $762,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $780,833

Set on D and in net. Forwards aren't the best group but good enough to support Lundqvist and that outstanding defense. Easily more depth than last year. I remember this being the lineup at one point due to injuries and such:

Hagelin - Stepan - Nash
Pyatt - Richards - Gaborik
Asham - Boyle - Halpern
Bickel - Miller - Powe

:help:

Any player can be buried in the minors but only 925k of cap can be buried per player, hence the totals you see in my mock roster (cap hit - 925k)

Really? I had misunderstood the rule this entire time. I thought anyones cap hit over (whatever the number was.. between 600-700K) would count in full in the minors.

BURIED CONTRACTS (Wade Redden Rule)
Money paid to players outside of the NHL counts against the cap.
A one-way contract counts against the cap as follows:
cap hit – [ minimum salary + $375,000 ]
Example: If Wade Redden plays in the minors in 2012-13, he counts as follows.
$6.5M – [ $525,000 + $375,000 ] = $5.6M
A two-way contract counts as follows:
minor-league salary – [ minimum salary + $375,000 ]
Example: Player A’s two-way contract pays $3M/$1M in 2012-13 and counts as follows in the minors.
$1M – [ $525,000 + $375,000 ] = $100,000

Minimum salary this season is $550k

i wouldnt say he's finished but theres no reason to sign him either

I'm not too sure. He didn't have a great year, but his coach was Joe Sacco. Sacco makes some dumb moves - One of them was playing Hejduk in a checking role. Even if he's lost his speed, he's still a great puck carrier with a sweet shot. Loads of older guys struggled in the lockout season without a camp.

I wouldn't mind him if they don't come to an agreement with Zuc and Hejduk could be had for cheap. He's probably looking for 1,5+ (Agent says: He won't be taking the minimum, will be looking for a deal with performance bonuses). At that cap hit I wouldn't want him either, but at a sensible price? I'd take a chance on him.

all predicated on there being cap space and given our cap space is going to be so precious, is Hejduk the best way to spend the money? He is a player who is really no different than Jagr except not as much of a performer but at a price that makes a lot of sense (compared to Jagr's $4M+ which 50% of comes from the fact that he's Jagr.)

He knows his role with the Avs is now limited to basically 4th line duties and I think he's good enough of a player with good enough of understanding to really help the 3rd/4th line situations but I question his ability to keep up. If he shouldn't be relegated to the 4th line and if he's no good on the energy line anyway, he's slotted in the 3rd line. If he doesn't click with a competitive 3rd line because of chemistry of speed/energy, then he's relegated to being scratched. If a team has very little depth and wants a veteran presence in the locker room or can find a fit for him on a 2nd/4th line, then that's where he belongs.

I understand the arguments against Jagr. I disagree with some of the points being made. I understand the arguments for Zucc as opposed to Jagr.

I'd still prefer Jagr. He will not cost a lot. I like his size and ability (even if it isn't what it once was) over Zucc. I think he provides more size that this lineup could use. Richards, Stepan, Brassard, Pouliot, Hagelin, and even Moore don't have much size. Jagr would be much better for along the boards, he still has the instincts and the shot. He stays healthy throughout the season for the vast majority. Just seems better for the team.

It's also the fact that Jagr is sort of a single bullet in a gun where if it misses, the gun's useless and not only is he going to slow down the team in an important season, but we also lose Zucc who has a higher ceiling than Jagr at this point and will be much cheaper.

With Jagr, people doubted him during his tenure with Philly to start the year. People doubted him with the Stars. I think the age might really catch up with him this year. After going all but 1 game in the PO, and with the turn around time being shorter this year, next season might well be the one where his age affects his physicality and speed. His efforts in the PO was shaky already.

Justin Falk was eligible to receive a 2 way qualifying offer. He signed a one year deal last July 5 right before he could have filed for salary arbitration. $825,000 one way after having a 1 year 2 way deal in 11-12. Minnesota was not planning to qualify him so they traded him to the Rangers. His QO is $866,250. He should be happy to have the qualifying offer. 1 year deal in the range of his 2013 salary and the QO. 1 way. Look at how many players are free agents right now. The market has dried up. Many of those players have played their last NHL game and did not realize it. The deadline to file for salary arbitration is tomorrow at 5pm.
