A bad look for fans to complain about their team? Lol. Come on. Thats a new one.

no it’s a bad look for our management. We’re being laughed at everywhere for this move.

you want veteran guys that are going to help the core young guys. This guy will hurt them. We complained about Staal? This guy is that much worse.
Considering a guy like Merrill who is significantly better signed for under a million it seems like they literally signed Johnson because Jacques Martin likes him lol

Like we should be getting laughed at for this, it’s embarrassing

Haula sucks guys.

it’s not, but they basically got rid of a really bad defenseman and replaced him with a really bad defenseman.

like there are a zillion options who could have been picked up for similar money. It was a given that they’d do something stupid this offseason but I thought it would be Matt Martin stupid, not Jack Johnson stupid.

it’s the continued overvaluing of stuff and things in lieu of being able to play the game that is worrisome. On its own, this deal isn’t going to ruin the offseason and anyone who thinks they’ll play Jack Johnson over a “ready” K’Andre Miller is crazy, but it’s a trend that I hoped was finally broken the second they shipped Staal out of town. Those attributes are fantastic when combined with ability, it’s part of what separates Lafreniere from his peers, but Jack Johnson is not able to play at this level.

And he may very well be sent to Hartford along with his contract. This is a non event signing and I have no idea why there are 20 pages worth of people complaining. If you didn’t know the terms of this deal you would think we just signed him to a 4x4 contract. At the very least this board has another whipping boy to go along with Howden and Strome. Maybe JD and JG knew this.

No, you come on. That's not what is happening here, your perception is wrong. The bad look is to over-react, foaming mouth style, to a ONE YEAR ONE MILLION DEAL, that is in reality no real issue to blow up at all. It looks silly to say the least.

Everybody laughing at this deal is as delusional as the foaming mouth crowd complaining about it. AFAIK there is nothing even to look at.

Not buying any of this. We have the vets. We'll have to see. Even if it hurts them, which it won't, it'll be for only one year.
If the thread thinks this is bad, wait until we sign Staal after next season on an identical contract. JJ just a placeholder.

I think I remember Crosby pushing the Penguins GM to sign Jack Johnson the last time around. Keeping in mind that players don't always see things exactly like fans do......but Johnson for whatever reason does seem to have a lot of good will around the league.

Also I feel like this argument comes up every time the Rangers sign a shit player “oh he’s on a cheap deal, don’t worry he won’t play much, if the kids are playing well he won’t play”

The management and coaching has shown countless times they play these pylons regardless. Johnson is no different. Martin loves him, he’s going to play

Edit: I just looked it up, in his two seasons with Pittsburgh out of a possible 159 regular season games, Johnson played in 157 of them.

He’s 100% getting regular minutes here

I think we're all missing the bigger picture here. Gorton obviously reads HFNYR and saw all of the Howden hate, so he signed Jack Johnson to be our new scapegoat. You gotta appreciate how well our management is looking out for our younger players as we continue to build.

Frankly, the immeasurable over-reaction to the JJ signing is a bad look for us fans ... 1m/1y deal and people act like it's the end of the f***ing world.

We beat this to death yesterday.

The issue is not the money or the term. The issue is this FO/coaching staff actively bringing in terrible hockey players. That’s the issue.

Let’s see if you’ve got the same outlook when he’s playing 19M a night next season.

I don't think he'll get that much ice, but honestly even at 12-14 minutes thats too much.

With all due respect those are the same people who say florida won the offseason and that this year will be different for the leafs. I personally don’t care about their opinions.

Think of JJ as the defenseman version of bad 4th liner signing who will eventually be in Hartford or on waivers.

Maybe the other options that signed didnt want to be in NY or in Hartford if they don’t stick.

Exactly. We now have Strome, Howden and JJ as the whipping boys. The young guys are safe.

Because by all accounts he’s a great guy

to me this says why what players think about other players shouldn't matter and is not a ringing endorsement of Johnson.

He and Crosby are childhood friends.

Yesterday, Brian Lawton (who’s a former agent) was talking about how relationships with a player makes a bigger difference for those in the organization than many fans realize. That sometimes teams sign a player that leaves fans really scratching their heads, and there’s not much more to it than the relationship. He said it happens often and fans have to realize it is what it is.

A few hours later, JJ signs with us. Jack was w/ JD in CLB, Martin in PIT and his story is very public. These are still people, and while a million different analytics will say it wasn’t the best move, there is an intangible factor here. We don’t have to like it, but at the end of the day, as much as we want everyone in the org to be talent evaluating robots devoid of all human emotion, it’s just not the case. And maybe there are certain intangible benefits that come with that.

and their defense was better than ours is now.

with the absolute delusion to think this is a nothing signing, you would think the NYR don't have a history of these exact nonsensical moves.
