and their defense was better than ours is now.

with the absolute delusion to think this is a nothing signing, you would think the NYR don't have a history of these exact nonsensical moves.
He averaged over 19 minutes TOI both of those seasons

Martin is going to have this guy play on the top paring with Trouba because we have no one else....

Johnson is not a good hockey player. Never was a good hockey player. We aren’t complaining about a million dollars. We are complaining that he is going to take minutes from players that actually deserve it and need those minutes to further their development. What’s frustrating is that this happens too often and people on HF should not know more than management. I don’t care if Shesty bails him out every shift and he ends up + this year. He is not good and we have better options in the minors.

Because by all accounts he’s a great guy

Well Martin is your Ruff replacement and you got to figure Gorton/Davidson did ask him before moving on Johnson.....and probably the 'good teammate' thing figures into this as well. It is one year and maybe not even that---maybe he's dealt during the season or at the deadline--maybe this gives us an extra 5th rounder in next year's draft. It is interesting how Staal no longer is the worst defenseman in the league. That we've found someone even more terrible. There are some major differences though between the contract Staal was carrying and the one that Johnson signed. One way more overvalues the player, came with trade and movement restrictions (we couldn't just dump him in Hartford) and the other can be almost entirely buried if necessary with no restrictions at all. If Johnson doesn't play well we're not stuck with him. We can easily play someone else.

you could literally hand me a voucher for a free car wash and I’d be happy

Not to mention, the return really just doesn't matter if you can upgrade to Granlund in the process, which will cost no assets.

There just didnt seem like there were a lot of good options for LD after Dillon re-signed in WAS. So to management, with Martin’s familiarity included, this was the next best stopgap option that wouldnt cost much. Thats the way I look at it. Couldnt bank on being able to trade for a LD such as Dunn. They felt they had to at least have someone. But the other side of it is Johnson is terrible. Like real bad. And the fear is he ends up getting significant minutes this year...or even any minutes at all because he is gona have to play with someone. So who does he drag down? Trouba? DeAngelo?

Also interesting was the Kinkaid signing imo. The Rangers have 5 goalies between the AHL/NHL. I just dont think you see Huska regress enough to be in the ECHL. And I think it would be horrible for Wall‘s development to spend time anywhere other than the AHL with at least splitting the starts. So where does Kinkaid fit? Insurance in case we do move Georgiev? But if we dont, he is gona have to play. Guess we’ll find out over the next month or so.

Of course JJ is going to play. Likely too much.

Without knowing the trade market it's difficult to say yet I think the Rangers probably could have spent like a 4th/5h to grab a better option off a cap strapped team. Example Ryan Murray was traded to the Devils for a 5th.

With Krug going to STL and Brodie to TOR, I really don't see where Pietrangelo is going other than VGK. Who else would have the space outside of maybe Columbus? Maybe the Canucks if they miss out on Barrie, but they have huge contracts looming for Pettersson and Hughes next season.

I doubt they are done on LD... let’s see what the weekend brings ... Gorton hasn’t talked to the media yet so more is brewing

Markus Nutivarra got traded for a prospect who's worse than Ty Ronning for god's sake

LV doesn't have the space either. Pietrangelo will either adjust his expectations, or a team will have to get creative to meet them.

Vegas has 2M in cap space. Not sure how they would afford Pietrangelo.
