I don’t think you are getting why I’m upset. I’m not upset that we signed a veteran dman for the very purpose you are describing. I’m upset that we signed the absolute WORST one available. And that’s exactly what we did by every metric.

Well, like I said, he wouldn't have been my choice, but my suspicion is that they were looking at a small handful of guys who would take a 1-year, ~$1MM deal, and while JJ is probably not the best, given the role, they went for the guy who knew Martin's system and who they were confident had the personality for the job.
Anyone meaningfully better would certainly be getting more dollars and likely more years.

Frankly, the immeasurable over-reaction to the JJ signing is a bad look for us fans ... 1m/1y deal and people act like it's the end of the f***ing world.

Sounds more like he's not getting the $$$, term or both he wanted and is trying to goat a team to increase their offer by saying that he won't make a decision today and is weighing is offers.

No one that’s why I said one isn’t coming back. As for the purpose, it would only be if Stromes arb would be walk away level which in my mind is prob 4.5 or lower and we lose him for nothing.
Strome doesn’t suck that bad .... he’s gonna get potentially like 1 million too much for 1 year. If he goes fine but they better have a replacement

you want veteran guys that are going to help the core young guys. This guy will hurt them. We complained about Staal? This guy is that much worse.
Merrill, Pouliot, and Sbisa are names that come to mind, not confidence inspiring but better than JJ? Also Beaulieu got 2 yrs at 1.25, takes care of Exp draft and nice spare to have around when the kids arrive. That being said, JJ signing is not the end of the world although it’s fun to posture.
All the guy said is he had a chance to play which he does .... it’s a 2 way deal so he knows he could be up and down
I more want the spot open for Chytil. I’d like us to sign a bottom 6 center. There’s still a couple options out there.
Agree would love Haula, he’s a Finn correct? Good for Kakko. He’s the kind of guy you need to compliment top skill. Would settle for Soderberg cheaply 1 yr I suppose.

like there are a zillion options who could have been picked up for similar money. It was a given that they’d do something stupid this offseason but I thought it would be Matt Martin stupid, not Jack Johnson stupid.
it’s the continued overvaluing of stuff and things in lieu of being able to play the game that is worrisome. On its own, this deal isn’t going to ruin the offseason and anyone who thinks they’ll play Jack Johnson over a “ready” K’Andre Miller is crazy, but it’s a trend that I hoped was finally broken the second they shipped Staal out of town. Those attributes are fantastic when combined with ability, it’s part of what separates Lafreniere from his peers, but Jack Johnson is not able to play at this level.

I hope people here are prepared for the return on Strome to be minimal- we are not filling a legitimate hole on this roster through that move (though maybe thru a subsequent trade or Haula signing type thing).

No, you come on. That's not what is happening here, your perception is wrong. The bad look is to over-react, foaming mouth style, to a ONE YEAR ONE MILLION DEAL, that is in reality no real issue to blow up at all. It looks silly to say the least.
Everybody laughing at this deal is as delusional as the foaming mouth crowd complaining about it. AFAIK there is nothing even to look at.
Not buying any of this. We have the vets. We'll have to see. Even if it hurts them, which it won't, it'll be for only one year.
Maybe JJ entered into a manservant arrangement with Martin when he hit financial rock bottom.
