Looking at free agent LD availability---there wasn't really ever that much in this free agent class. Torey Krug was always going to be too much and the guy I liked the most Brenden Dillon didn't reach free agency.

For me the guy I would have wanted most of those left was Mark Borowiecki. He went to Nashville. The next guy would have been Dmitri Kulikov who's been around it seems forever but is only 29. The issue with him might have been he's coming off of a $4.333 mil per year deal and probably would want at least $2.5. He's also very much a stay at home guy. Andy Greene is 37 and coming off a $5 mil per year deal--again he might not be willing to sign cheap and who knows maybe he doesn't like the Rangers having been on a rival team for so long. Anyway he's 37 and I don't like that. Speaking of age Chara is 43--probably doesn't want to play anywhere but Boston if he doesn't retire. Ben Hutton---not terrific but okay. Mirco Mueller's been a spare part for two bad teams--New Jersey and San Jose--forget him. Erik Gustafsson had a 60 point season in Chicago and got moved on to Calgary where he puts up 29--one wonders what's the matter with him? when after all that production he's carrying a $1.2 mil contract. Slater Koekkoek is 26 and like Mueller has always been a spare part only for better teams. Joakim Ryan? Last and maybe least Michael Del Zotto and I don't want to go there.

It's a pretty underwhelming bunch for the most part and IMO it might have been better to explore a trade instead and Gorton probably did that.....but at least half the teams in the league are trying to figure out ways to dump cap.

With Krug going to STL and Brodie to TOR, I really don't see where Pietrangelo is going other than VGK. Who else would have the space outside of maybe Columbus? Maybe the Canucks if they miss out on Barrie, but they have huge contracts looming for Pettersson and Hughes next season.

Florida?

Because I love you all I did a very quick and lazy (25% efficiency) excel data sort from CapFriendly of players I believe the Rangers could find useful for the right price. This list is fluid and will change within minutes of me posting but feel free to reference. I'm still 110% on the Nieto train. You know how I feel about him. Him, Fast back, and maybe Kulikov/Mueller as LHD depth and I would be satisfied.

Didn't Hoffman sign with the Oilers?

Vegas has 2M in cap space. Not sure how they would afford Pietrangelo.
I don't know either, but he's been linked strongly to Vegas for the last week or so - Brooksie even mentioned that STL might consider filing tampering charges against them.

They were able to move Stastny to WPG, and I'd imagine they could find suitors for some of their other pieces if they *really* wanted Pietrangelo. Doesn't seem realistic though.

I’m going Gorton has something still to come. Centers available and we walk away with Kinkaid, depth defense, AHL depth, and Kevin Rooney.

I’m for Johnson... on the third pair. But the left side is bad.

Are they still considering ADA on the left? Or was that just posturing?

ADA - Trouba
lindgren -fox

I could live with a bit more.

I
Think ADA could pair with Trouba. I don’t know how he would play against teams top lines and running our PP. Gorton also talked about fox and nils moving to LD. Ideally I’d rather leave the 2nd pair of Lindgren and Fox as is. They know each other well, have played together for a while now going all the way back to WJC. I think Lindgren had a big influence on foxs great first year. Fox def has all the talent in the world but being comfortable with your partner and depending on him to make the right plays is a huge stress reliever. Lindgren was great in his own right too. Like I’ve been saying for a while if Nils can make the switch successfully it would solve a ton of problems. Maybe give Miller a try mid season this year if ADA struggles with trouba. Ultimately it could be
Lundqvist-Trouba
Lindgren-Fox
Miller-DeAngelo
7th D
with Schneider and Robertson not too far behind

I think we'll probably see a Fleury buyout if they get Pietrangelo. Doesn't get them all the way there, but it's a significant step in that direction.
