The letter said we'd be losing guys that we've grown attached to and will hurt to lose for the purpose of being better in the future.

We're still building and growing in this build. Unfortunately, we're moving on from Fast. It sucks, but we're going to see the kids from here on out unless there is a trade.

Not a lot of room for Jesper Fast.

I think he could of beaten them out another year...but yes long term, he wouldn't be a fit. But I guess it's me being selfish or sentimental or both, but I would have loved the flexibility keeping him would have brought.

I suppose he didn't

I'd be shocked if the Rangers offered him 3M and he left, unless it was for 1 year. Why would he want to leave when his role is likely going to be reduced? I suppose he could have just not wanted to be a Ranger but why would he entertain their offer if so?

Ok so we've got Lafreniere and Kakko and if we're gonna sit around and wait for them to take the reigns and stockpile picks and prospects in the meantime, that's cool and all, but then why did we sign Panarin? Why did we sign Trouba? Why did we not trade Fast? Why did we keep Kreider? Why did we get rid of Staal and Hank when they were expiring in a year anyway?

Those moves clearly signaled our intent to compete soon and I haven't seen a single move yet to make this team better now.

Maybe something is on the horizon, but I don't feel we're particularly committed to any plan here.
If they HAVE to sign Strome and then Geo and ADA. That cap space is looking a lot slimmer. Probably just enough wiggle room to make a trade or 2 during the season.

Heart and soul type player for his team? Or for his teammates? And how many of those are left?

He's played with Zib, Kreider, Buchnevich, DeAngelo, Smith, Georgiev, hell even Howden, for several seasons now

So yeah, the team and the teammates that comprise the team

Retaining all of those guys just puts us right back where we were last year, which is a bad hockey team.

Are we competing or still rebuilding? Really getting mixed signals here.

I have the same questions to a certain extent.
If we are still on 'patience grasshopper' route (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) it means we'll pretty much be waiting the 1st 3 years of Panarin's contract and not looking to compete until he's 30. Zib will need a new contract by the 2nd year of 'competing' at best and ELCs for Chytil, Krav, Fox and probably Kakko won't have been fully utilised. We also don't have a mid-to-long term 2C option currently in the organization (my bias, I think Chytil is a winger)

We're not doing anything 'wrong', we just seem to be a little bit all over the shop

I would like to keep Kravtsov in the KHL for at least the rest of this year.

What the f*** are you doing Gorton? How do you let Fast walk at that contract? HOW. Outside of Lafreniere this has been a terrible week.
This is the crux of the whole argument. It’s not that fast is gone but the fact that we didn’t at least match that contract for our glue guy to stay. He did not want to leave NY. The money is not outrageous and there is not 4th year so what is the problem??? Plus the front office is saying they want to get harder to play against smh. Well letting fast walk for that and signing Jack Johnson doesn’t really fit the MO in my opinion. Jesus

My point is that it's not the group he came up with. Kreider is the only one left, so he might have felt like this isn't his group anymore. That made it easier to move on. It's about teammates rather than the sweater.

See I was worried about them bringing back largely the same damn team (except Lafreniere) but evidently no, we’re bringing largely the same team minus the good player

Plus a worse version of Staal!

I don't get it.

You're rebuilding or you're competing. It seems like we're headed down the road of "we're not gonna burn it down but we're not actively going for the Stanley Cup" which is what we've done for the 80 years.

which is why it would be nice to hear what the term was. If they offered him a year than the Carolina deal is slightly more appealing obviously.

Perhaps. I guess he saw the writing on the wall with all of our wingers coming in behind him.

Still a surprise for me. It's still new seeing important/relatively important players drafted actually leave in FA. Tavares started the trend it seems.

It just felt like he was type of player who'd be the unsung hero type before leaving in his early 30's or something. Ah well
