these charts tell me that mcdonagh is a bad defenseman too :naughty:

No, Mcdonagh is better..

but this "Shattenkirk is bad" is coming from the media because of some bad plays he's made over his career, and/or a bad +/- (the most useless stat in hockey, see Girardi). and fans are buying into it.

Per Friedman - Lots of moves coming for VAN. Looks like (unconfirmed) Gagner at 3x3-ish, Del Zotto at 2x3, Nilsson at 2x2.5-3 and Burmistrov at $900K.

The possession stats are lopsided in Shattenkirk's favor too (that could however be due to system/team).

Thats the biggest problem i have with these charts.(besides from the lack of accuracy with the bars sometimes). If you have read the advanced stats thread you'd see that quality of competition vs quality of teammate was discussed at length and it was determined that quality of teammate was one of the major inputs in determining success. And with these two charts in mind, who had a worse D partner last year than Mcdonagh?

Woah, that's not a bad deal for gagner if he can do what he did last season with CBJ

thats what i get for following carpinello...although it is right on par with our beat writers to be 3 years late reporting a story

shattenkirk is a very good offensive driver. his possession numbers are good, he carries the mail and he generates shots. his pp work is very good with his ability to skate and make smart passes. he has a good shot as well. accurate and usually on net and low so there are defections, tip, redirect and rebound opportunity.

he is not a 1st pair matchup rd however. he just is not. he plays soft, he chases alot and he gets lost in man zone coverage alot. he will make coverage errors and can get lost frequently.

offensive dmen like he is usually arent great 2 way guys unless they are norris trophy usual suspects. he aint.

i worry about his playing on 27's side and honestly would prefer 42 there.

we shall see but again, shattenkirk is not a great partner for 27 if we are matching against teams top lines.

but keep on trying to spin this. his offense is A plus and his defense is a solid C

Can we stop pretending that the Best skating and passing right d will be paired with Mcdonagh????

We know where theyll be... Stapled to the side of Marc Staal

context.

he wasnt a 1st pair guy in st lou and he was a 3rd pair guy in wash.

hes gonna get roasted along side 27. playing a ton of matchup and having to play against bigger forwards doesnt play to his strength.

for 6.5 x 6 or 7 thats gonna be tiresome.
