That LB article turns my stomach.

No I would not do that. No I do not want the NYR to prop up their roster yet again in a short sighted fashion. EK isn’t bringing a Cup to NY next Spring. I’d go to Vegas with that in a heartbeat.

It’s not just the trade cost, but opportunity cost. Rebuilding may not work but it has better odds than doing the same ol same ol that has composed most of the franchise’s existence.

I could tolerate a UFA signing after another lean year complete with stockpiling assets and a 3rd consecutive top 10 pick. That’s a totally different proposition.

Here's our tough guy they are looking for, sounds like this may actually happen.

I wonder what the Oilers want for him...

I don’t think trading for Karlsson is about “propping up the roster”, I think it’s about Karlsson being a top-5 player in the league and a perennial Norris/Hart candidate. The chances we draft someone of that caliber are slim to none. The opportunity to get a player of Karlsson’s caliber via trade is arguably once in a lifetime. So, I think the Rangers would have interest regardless of whether we’re “rebuilding” or “contending”.

Sure he is...right now. How does EKs remaining timeline intertwine w Hanks and the prospects? Will there ever be enough firing at the same time to be a Cup contender? If so, how big is the window? 1-2 years? How does being a bubble playoff team - ECF caliber team for the next 4 years get the NYR closer to being a contender?

All of these are huge question marks to me. It’s a lot more complicated than just saying “get him he’s an elite player” from my perspective.

If we trade for Ek we set the rebuild back maybe make, the wildcard as the last team and get demolished by the leafs and or Tamapa. After that he more than likely leaves or he resigns and we continue being mediocre. Trading for him would be a bad idea plain and simple.

It all depends on how you think he’ll age. Personally, I think he’ll be worth his contract throughout the life of it. If someone thought otherwise, I get why they wouldn’t be interested.

@BBKers talked about us trading for him with a significant piece or two coming back our way with Zucarello going the other way. The original ask if i remember for taking on Lucic was GMJG asked for Draisital, that isnt happening how far are we off with Zuccc for Lucic+poolparty +2019 first.

I looked at the Brooks article as more of a thinking out loud piece. I certainly wouldn't trade both Hayes and Zibanejad though. One maybe--not both. The Rangers have a glut of prospects at pretty much every position now. So that part doesn't bother me that much either that is if they do wall off Chytil, Andersson, Hajek, Shesterkin, Kravtsov.

Anyway before panning a deal for Karlsson I'd have to see it first. If he's healthy he's a whale of a hockey player. He's a future Hall of Famer right now.

I'd ask for another prospect other than poolparty.

Just a waste of assets and poor strategic management

It's not a waste of assets if your getting an extended elite Dman. Only thing that would hurt is Buch. If Pionk hits his potential he will be a 2nd pair dman. Georgiev is a wild card but has limited NHL experience.

Again I highly doubt Gorton is in as the destination point for Karlsson and i also doubt that Ottawa would accept that package for Karlsson.

The Brooks article reads like he is getting cold feet on his earlier firm statements that the Rangers would not in any circumstance be in on EK. Seems like old Larry is hedging his bets after reading this boards.

He hedged the article by saying that the Rangers aren't going for him, as hes said in the past. It's more thinking outloud.

who would you ask for? Yamamoto? Bouchard?

Yamamoto. I dont think the Oilers would trade a player they just picked and is in a position of need in the organization.

I honestly think poolparty will be a bust. By bust I mean not matching expectations of a player drafted #4 overall.

I just dont see it, does he make us a contender, when we give him 11 mil per do we have cap space to give raises? grab another forward or center and still with Staal, Smith, Belesky, Girardi's 3.6 mil cap hit for the buyout? I just dont see how you can ice a competitive team against the leagues best who dont have these horrible contracts all while using UFA contracts. Trust me I love Karlsson as much as anybody but he isnt the answer at this point in time imo
