I’m sorry, but I fundamentally disagree with that approach. Everything you could hope to draft by tanking for ten years is starring us right in the face. Play the kids next year with Karlsson as a mentor and continue drafting the next few years. The last thing you want, in my opinion, is to try to develop these kids in a losing environment. That is the quickest route to an Edmonton or Buffalo.

Nope. Losing for a season or two, and that's all I'm talking about, does not make you Edmonton or buffalo.

And somehow Karlsson is going to turn in to a heap of trash in year three?

All I’m saying, is suck for the next two seasons, even though I fundamentally reject that approach, at which point we will have an elite defenseman to build around as well as many of the prospects we would have drafted should be coming into their own, hopefully.

One of the underrated things here is that Karlsson can force himself to pretty much any team he wants, right now.

In some ways he is already UFA. He won't sign in Ottawa, and they have to get something for him. He can force himself to whatever team he wants by refusing to sign with a bunch of interested teams.

Its likely he won't give them only one option but he can say I will only sign for NYR, TB or LV which will make him easier to obtain.

Its what you have to do to "lose for a season or two"

I don't see us as a bottom 5 team right now. Some want to trade Hayes, Zucc, Spooner, etc. They want to strip all talent off the roster and sit with literally nothing. That is Edmonton and Buffalo.

I don’t know why real “journalists” would risk their reputation, vacillating back and forth, for clicks.
That concept is pretty stretched for sports journalists, and this era of journalism in general. But Larry sets it all up pretty clearly as a hypo. There’s no vacillation.

Nailed it.

It almost seems like he’s forcing himself to one team.

The idea that you can "lose for a season or two" then flip a switch and say OK WE'RE READY TO WIN HOCKEY GAMES, LETS GO!!! is how you become Buffalo and Edmonton. Buffalo did everything right, loaded up on picks. Got studs. Got the franchise player. They still lose.

I know there are examples of teams who have won doing the same thing, but it's no sure thing we'll even get that franchise player and it's no sure thing we will start winning if we do get him.

The quickest route to the NYR becoming Edmjnton or Buffalo would be to relocate to The Bronx and abandon their MSG tv deal. Toronto, LA, Chicago is the model, not sure why this ridiculous comparison keeps being made. They will always spend to the cap and be attractive to UFAs, imagine tacking that on to an elite young nucleus.

The Sens probably wanted to do a duel deal with Ryan and EK originally. Then it became a deal where it included a third team which looks like hit a snag. So maybe now the Rangers instead of becoming a third team can become the main trading partner. It has to include Hayes which I don't mind.(I want Filip as 2C) but including Brady would be sad.

Normally I would agree, but given his prior claims that the Rangers are unequivocally opposed to bringing in Karlsson and Ryan, the speculation seems to me to be a pretty clear hedge.

Buffalo and Edmonton made crucial mistakes. They added forwards but did not put enough emphasis on defense and goaltending. Thats why they have failed. They have not done everything right. They havent tried to build a cohesive team. They keep adding offensive players (many of whom don't play defense) in the draft. They have neglected that half of the ice. When Edmonton made their run two seasons ago, Talbot had close to a Vezina caliber season. This season he didn't and look what happened.

The Rangers not only are a better free agent destination than eithe rof those places, they have goaltending. Lundqvist can take them until when Shestyorkin/Georgiev/Lindbom can take over. There is a plan there. Right now the defense is bad but Quinn will be able to help modernize it, at least in theory. I don't think their is a magic switch that goes on or off.

Name 5 teams worse than us today?

I don’t know what’s ridiculous about it? Toronto hasn’t won the cup in fifty-two years and is the second biggest hockey market in the world behind us. Only now are they competing again. LA and Chicago sucked for how long before they were able to turn it around. You can really only point to three teams that have had lasting success after years of terrible hockey, using that model.

...and it’s not just Buffalo and Edmonton. It’s Arizona, Calgary, Carolina, Islanders and so forth.

The defense will be bad next season but they have a decently large crop of solid prospects in Miller, Lundkvist, Hajek, Lindgren, Pionk and Rykov. They are missing that legit top pair guy though. Of that group only person I see that has that ceiling is Miller but he has a long way to go.
