If staal would waive his ntc, staal and deangelo or a 1st for rnh. Rnh is a bit overpaid but would fit well as a 2/3c with Hayes long term.

Having an elite goalie in the Cap era is death. You cannot win when your best, highest paid player, is your goalie. The difference between tier 1 and tier 3 goalies is minimal, way smaller than the difference between tiers at C and D.

Habs are ****ed.

It depends who we add to our team. Some people are convinced we need an elite center to win the Cup. Well, we won't win one in the next 5 years then. We reached the final in 2014 without an elite center, where we lost 3 games in OT.

We also got to that finals after playing a MTL team without Price in the Eastern Conference Finals, possibly the worst team to make a Conference Final in the last 40 years, and won a series against Pittsburgh where we were pretty clearly the worse team. And we lost that final in 5 games, to a team that had a legit #1 center in Kopitar. Please don't get me started on the 2014 Rangers, one of the luckiest and, IMO, worst teams to ever make the Stanley Cup Finals.

Over the last 37 years, there were the elite first line centers: Gretzky, Messier, Mario Lemieux, Bryan Trottier, Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic (and Forsberg), Sidney Crosby (and Malkin), Jonathan Toews.

Somewhere in between that NJ won a bunch with but the game was so different then (that system won't fly today)

Modano with Dallas was a gamebreaker. Doug Gilmore was good, but D Al MacInnis was the gamebreaker & scoring leader for the Flames.

Even the LA Kings did it with huge strength and size down the middle.

You're leaving out a number of other teams who won Stanley Cups with an elite or great #1 center. Datsyuk, Kopitar, Getzlaf, Richards, etc.

Are there exceptions? Sure. The 2011 Bruins, the Devils, the 86 and 93 Habs, the 88-89 Flames. But that's about it. Every other team since 1980 to win a Cup had a great or elite #1 center, some had 2, and even these exceptions usually had centers like Bergeron or Gilmour who are not elite, and maybe not even great offensively, but very good and wingers who happened to have magnificent offensive seasons (Damphousse, Mullen, Naslund, etc).

Most Stanley Cup winners have top centers. No getting around that fact.

If we won the 2014 ECF because of Price going down, does that mean we lost the 2015 ECF because Zuccarello was out? Or does it only apply if it works against us? Injuries happen all the time

I'd seriously consider Skjei for Mackinnon if it was on the table.

I think Gorton grabs a couple of veteran stop gaps for this season. Desharnais and maybe Mitchell. AV tries Miller at center to start the year. I think he will be patient and look for the right guy. Gennie has pieces and cap space to make a deal, but a deal this large can't be forced as that leads to overpaying.

I'm still in favor of RNH as a fall back if the price is pretty low. Nash for RNH.

Gaborik when traded returned Brassard (similar career path as RNH now when he was traded) + Moore + Dorsett

RNH + Khaira for Nash?

Ranger boy had an idea of using Miller to get a piece to send for Trouba. Replace Trouba with a young top 6 center in that sentence.

Again, Miller has to stay regardless, unless we bring another wing / center combo IN ADDITION to whatever Miller would bring.
