I would absolutely take a chance on Galchenyuk if the price was reasonable. Maybe offer Montreal something like Holden, Graves, 2nd and 4th?

Zib as our 1C
Hayes and Miller or Galchenyuk 2C and 3C

Help either whichever of Miller / Galchenyuk is playing center by giving them hockey smart and defensively responsible wings in Nash and Vesey.

Kreider - Zibanejad - Buchnevich
Vesey - Miller/Galchenyuk - Nash
Galchenyuk /Miller - Hayes - Zuccarello
Grabner - xxx - Fast

Zib is going to be our 1C. There are no centers available out there to be had that we can afford. Teams aren't going to take 5 pieces of B and C level players and prospects and a pick or two for their 1C. At best, we move Miller or Hayes in a package for an upgraded roster player that can play center.

The more I read about Galchenyuk, the more I'm lead to believe he can't hack it as a centerman.

I know this is a roster building thread and ideas are fun to discuss but it would cost McDonagh+ or Skjei+Miller+ to convince the Avs to move MacKinnon and maybe that's not even enough if Sakic is stingy and out of his mind. 30 teams can't afford Duchene let alone MacKinnon. So the "Skjei for MacKinnon?" posts are like 25 miles south of center.

I really like the Jarnkrok idea. Underrated player. The VERY little I've seen of Nashville, I think he played every forward position.

Gally RNH Duchene - just get one of these types of guys. McKinnon is the dream but price and availability both make it unrealistic.

Been away for a while taking care of my mom, but I had to come back after yesterday.

Love the Shattenkirk deal. Every analyist had him at $7+million at 5-7 years. To get him for 4 years at such a reasonable rate is a massive win for Gorton and McDonagh, who will finally have a true partner. Love the fact that Shatty left millions on the table to come here. Says a lot about just how much wearing the blue sweater means to him.

Any rumors on who Gorton might be looking at for a center?

Anybody know the situation is with cap space?
A lot of talk of trading for a top C... we have to assume that will come with a cap hit.
Whats due on Duchene's contract? $6m per for two more years?

PROJECTED CAP HIT: $66,649,444
PROJECTED CAP SPACE: $8,350,556

This includes Klein's cap-hit.

Without him (When he officially retires), it will be 11,250,500 in cap-space

Approx. $11.5MM with Klein retiring. Have to resign Zbad and Fast along with 2-3 more forwards.

If they buyout Staal they will have $15MM.

From the first post
SALARY CAP: $75,000,000
BUYOUTS (Dan Girardi): $2,611,111
SALARY HIT: $61,063,333
SALARY HIT WITH BUYOUT:$63.674.444
CAP SPACE: $11,325,556
9 FWD - 8 D - 2 G (4-5 more fwds incoming + 1 D going out)
AVERAGE AGE ~ 28.2 years

Lineup includes 8 D (inclues Bear but not Kampfer). One of which will be moved (Or Staal bought out)
RFAs left to sign are Zib and Fast. And Jensen. So it is likely we sign (or trade for) 3 more fwds
Klein retires in this number

I truly believe that Staal will start the season in the top 6 (3rd pairing), and used mainly to PK, since he has AV's trust. However, should he not keep up and his play dips to the level of the past 2 seasons, he will not be in the line up, and I think Ruff's addition, will make it easier on AV, since Ruff has no ties to the player...
Stall, I believe, sees the writing on the wall. If he's not able to improve his play and maintain a top 6 role on this team, this will be his last year in NY. He has seen G bought out, and knows that they will do the same to him. Mgmt has traded almost all of the guys he came up with (Cally, Duby, Anisimov, Hags. etc...).Does he accept to waive his NTC...?

I mentioned in an earlier post, before we signed Shatty, that if they did sign him July 1st, I wouldn't be surprised if Skjei would be traded as part of a package to get a young, top line C (Mckinnon). I want to be clear, that I don't want to trade Skjei, but I don't think our GM planned on signing Shatty, but when he offered himself to us at those terms, I really don't think he had a choice! The reason I'm saying this, is because, I don't think for one second that he got all these young Dmen, to only have them wait on the sidelines, especially ADA and Bereglazov, who have played professionally already.

As another poster mentioned, I think our GM is waiting to see how things shake out over the next few weeks with other teams, especially the Avs, before striking. He said at the end of the year, that he wanted to get younger, as it stands now we've gotten 1 year older (Shatty 28yrs old/Stepan 27yrs old)...

I think it's a mistake to view Shattenkirk as a replacement for Stepan since they don't play the same position. He should be viewed rather as Girardi's replacement, since he'll likely be paired with McDonagh, and in that case, we certainly did get younger.

I don't know about you guys, but it feels amazing to have cap-space for the 2nd off-season in a row. Much better than Chicago already being over the cap by a few million and needing to get rid of salary.

Gorton has done a great job. We are still competitive, but have cap space to go after another FA

can we still buyout Staal during the rest of the summer? I thought that was over June 30th.

2nd buy out window opens soon for teams with RFAs with arbitration rights.

Buying out Staal?
What are the chances of that happening this season?

I am afraid the chances are slim, but it would be the best thing to do.

I added another column, showing the players who will be RFA or UFA. * indicates current ELC.

2018-19, the total cap-hit is 5.74m, but we have 7.8m of Nash and 1.65m of Grabner coming off the books to re-sign Vesey, Skjei, Miller and Hayes
2019-20, the total cap-hit goes up by 1m, with 4 players being UFA/RFA which we all want to keep, right? Now, that's a tough one. It still saves 4.4m due to Girardi and Staal both being on the team had they not been bought out though.
2020-21, Only Kreider coming off his contract of our current squad, but the cap penalty drops from 6.7m to 5m.

Don't get me wrong, Gorton is doing a fine job. Much better than Sather, but realistically speaking, is that cap space/UFA going to make us a legit cup contender? No.

I'll take Chicago's predicament any day. Part of that predicament involved winning 3 Stanley Cups. Good deal.

Same. Cap space is overrated if it's just to keep plugging away middle tier players and role guys. If you don't have a dynamic game breaker, it's moot.

It depends who we add to our team. Some people are convinced we need an elite center to win the Cup. Well, we won't win one in the next 5 years then. We reached the final in 2014 without an elite center, where we lost 3 games in OT.

Sweet jesus. Thats quite the hit in years 2 and 3. Is Brad Richards still being bought out at the same time?
Can they not try and move Staal to recoup something without having such a cap hit?
