Staal has to be off the team or the 7th D.
He can't take a regular shift in this league anymore in any role.
I truly believe that Staal will start the season in the top 6 (3rd pairing), and used mainly to PK, since he has AV's trust. However, should he not keep up and his play dips to the level of the past 2 seasons, he will not be in the line up, and I think Ruff's addition, will make it easier on AV, since Ruff has no ties to the player...
Stall, I believe, sees the writing on the wall. If he's not able to improve his play and maintain a top 6 role on this team, this will be his last year in NY. He has seen G bought out, and knows that they will do the same to him. Mgmt has traded almost all of the guys he came up with (Cally, Duby, Anisimov, Hags. etc...).Does he accept to waive his NTC...?
I mentioned in an earlier post, before we signed Shatty, that if they did sign him July 1st, I wouldn't be surprised if Skjei would be traded as part of a package to get a young, top line C (Mckinnon). I want to be clear, that I don't want to trade Skjei, but I don't think our GM planned on signing Shatty, but when he offered himself to us at those terms, I really don't think he had a choice! The reason I'm saying this, is because, I don't think for one second that he got all these young Dmen, to only have them wait on the sidelines, especially ADA and Bereglazov, who have played professionally already.
As another poster mentioned, I think our GM is waiting to see how things shake out over the next few weeks with other teams, especially the Avs, before striking. He said at the end of the year, that he wanted to get younger, as it stands now we've gotten 1 year older (Shatty 28yrs old/Stepan 27yrs old)...
